Imagine Dragons (5) – Week Of January 27, 2018

Hello, fam! I’ve been really busy with work as of late. When you’re 25 going on 26 (And yes. In case you didn’t know, my birthday is next weekend!), it’s difficult to get a lot of spare time given that I now have a busy schedule. I’m just overwhelmed with a lot of stuff right now. And yet somehow, despite all of this, I still manage to keep reviewing music. I’m just one of those special guys that mostly gets these posts out on time on a consistent basis. Okay, maybe I’m not too special, but you see what I mean. The Grammy Music Awards is tomorrow night, and I’m glad to be off that day because I get to watch all of the performances. I do plan on writing a review of the Grammys, though it may take some time to get those done because like I said, I have a life and I’m working all the time. So if I don’t have it done this week, it might be until next week. Thus, you’ll just have to be patient and bear with me. And yes, I still have the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Review that I’m trying to post. Unfortunately, due to my schedule, I haven’t gotten around to finishing it yet. I promise, I’ll try to have those two posts out sooner or later. I just don’t know when I’ll get those done. But anyway, I’ve said enough. Let’s get down to the action on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown! Before we get to this week’s fresh 45, here are the songs we’re saying good-bye to this week:

New Entrants

– We have quite a shake-up in terms of new debuts this week. First, we begin with newcomer WØLVES making their very first appearance on the countdown. Their debut single is titled Animal. I do think this song is a lot of fun for the most part. The production here is pretty amazing and I like the vocals. Not too much else I can say about it. We’ll see how far it gets.

– Next up, we have rapper NF debuting this week with the song that is currently gaining steam right now, by the name of Let You Down. I know some people are not very thrilled by me not liking the song. Allow me to explain why. The chipmunk vocals in some parts of the song just doesn’t sit well with me, and I really don’t like the vocal work from NF either. Sure the lyrical content is great and all, mainly because it talks about a father & son relationship, but how it’s executed is just pretty poor. He doesn’t really show any emotion and the chipmunk vocals blended together in the chorus doesn’t make it any better. I’m sorry, but I’m just not impressed.

– Now that What About Us is about to be out of the picture, P!NK’s next single is about to take its place. Enter Beautiful Trauma, the title track off of her latest album. Once again, P!NK almost never disappoints, and this song is no exception. Her voice shines like always throughout the song, and I love the production in this one. Those who like this can explain more about this one in detail better than I can, but the point is I’m hoping it can be just as successful as its predecessor.

– With the highest debut of the week, we have more Camila Cabello with her second single off of her self-titled album. Enter Never Be The Same. I talked about this one in detail when it debuted on the American Top 40. To sum it up, my concern about this song is her vocals. How she hits those high notes doesn’t sit well with me, especially in the pre-chorus. I’m not too sold on the lyrical content. The production mostly makes up for some of these flaws I just mentioned. Here’s how I view Camila Cabello at this moment. While she does have the potential to be a rising star, I think she needs to work on improving her vocals more, and maybe I’ll probably like this more. But right now, it is what it is for me. I have it in blue for now, but it could change with more listens.

It’s Just Another Manic Blurbday

– Let’s first talk about our exits. To start, we have two members of One Direction (Harry and Liam) who have songs that left. Both of their respective songs, Kiwi and Bedroom Floor, deserved better. It’s a shame that Strip That Down became a hit over its successor because it is clearly the better single. As for Kiwi, I’m sad that it left, but at the same time it’s not surprising given that people aren’t really buying into Harry Styles’s music. That said, both of these songs will be missed by me. That leaves us with two other songs. Look What You Made Me Do, as polarizing as it was, is still a favorite of mine and I may be one of the few who actually still likes it. It did get big for a while because of Taylor Swift’s star power. But in the end, people weren’t too fond of it and thus, it failed to become a bigger hit much like her singles off of 1989. While many are throwing a be-gone party over Look What You Made Me Do, I’m not going to be attending. Finally, we have the important exit. After spending a year and two weeks, Shape Of You, Ed Sheeran’s biggest hit of his career, is officially no more. From day one, this song nearly broke many records, in terms of sales, streaming, and airplay. From the first listen, I knew he would have a big hit coming and soon enough, it appeared to be the case. 12 Weeks #1 on Billboard, 10 Weeks on the American Top 40, and 9 Weeks on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. That is an incredible accomplishment. I enjoyed this song from start to finish and I never really got sick of it. I know many people will say that Ed Sheeran is currently overrated, but honestly I can’t help but enjoy his music. Farewell, Shape Of You. You lasted long and hard on this countdown. You will be truly missed.

– So, P!NK is going to perform in the Super Bowl. And guess what? Her hometown team, the Eagles, will be playing in that game. How cool is that to have your hometown team make it to the promised land? It’d be even cooler if her team actually won in the promised land. I watched that game last week against Minnesota and man, they dominated big time. Must be nice to watch them thrash the opposing team.

Too Good At Goodbyes took a rather big drop down to the bottom 5. Yikes! It’s dying out elsewhere right now, so I won’t be too heartbroken if it leaves us soon.

– Before introducing Dusk Till Dawn, Spyder Harrison mentioned that there are rumors that Zayn is collaborating with Selena Gomez in a new song for the movie Aladdin. It’s too bad that we’ll have to wait until next year to see what these artists have cooking up, because the movie won’t be out until then. Hopefully, their song will be at least to my liking.

– Speaking of Strip That Down, that one needs to go soon. I honestly don’t really know anyone who still supports this.

– I would like to say congrats to Ed Sheeran and his girlfriend on their engagement! Very heartwarming!

– It was cool to hear Symon introduce her single, Lonely Girl. Very rarely do we hear artists introduce their own songs on the countdown.

– Before introducing What Lovers Do, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Adam Levine is rocking his platinum hair, mainly because his wife seems to love it so much. He is known for having dark hair pretty much for most of his life, but I guess his wife loved his blonde hair so much he decided to dye it for her. I’ll be she’s hoping that he keeps it that way. That said, with his song dropping big this week, it looks like this may be the end as its successor is starting to gain steam, and I’ll talk more about it in a bit. But yeah, it did have a good run, so props to that.

– So, Justin Timberlake has been married to his wife for five years? I probably knew that he was with Jessica Biel, but I’m quite surprised that their marriage lasted that long. If only most of the other celebrities would at least take a page from his book, heh.

– Before introducing River, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Ed Sheeran brought three houses, and he’s apparently looking to build an estate. I wonder will it be the start of something big? Maybe Michael Jackson’s Neverland perhaps, or something else? Hmm…no one knows, but I’m interested to see what he has up his sleeve.

– I thought Too Much To Ask would be another moderate hit for Niall Horan after jumping to #7 last week. But that doesn’t appear to be the case, as it fell out of the Top 10 quickly down to #22 this week. Looks like the end for this song is near.

Finesse taking a big jump this week? Yes, please! Now how about getting in the Top 10, or even better, the Top 5? Please Hits 1, make it happen!

– However, I’m not thrilled to see Wait take a big jump as well. Of course, because this is Maroon 5, I unfortunately expect it to be here for a while, so I’ll just have to learn to put up with it.

– Not surprised to see Hold Me Tight Or Don’t make a rebound this week given that their album was released this past week. I wonder how long will the hype last? Hmm….

– And yet somehow, Believer is still hanging around in the teens. My goodness, this song’s longevity is just great. Also, Spyder Harrison mentioned during its introduction that Dan Reynolds has a upcoming documentary named after the song title. I’m interested to see what happened during their hiatus from music in between albums.

Ahead Of Myself made a nice recovery back into the teens this week after some unnecessary drops. Here’s to hoping it continues its upward trajectory and eventually become another hit for the X Ambassadors like its two previous representations. And the guest DJ that introduced the song was from Niagara Falls. Very cool, and I still have yet to visit that place. I’m hoping someday that I’ll be able to take a vacation there. I’ll bet it has some cool stuff going on!

– It’s good to see Selena Gomez featuring Marshmello – Wolves making it back into the Top 10. Hopefully, it can enter the Top 5, or even better hit #1 at some point.

How Long dropped out of the Top 5 relatively quickly. I thought it would potentially be #1 this week with how much I’ve been hearing it lately. Close, but no dice.

– On that note, we have two Top 5 entrants this week. Both End Game and Good Old Days are making their arrival, the former which may potentially end up being an elusive hit for Taylor Swift. The entrant from Good Old Days was pretty unexpected, but I’m happy to see that it’s doing pretty well right now. Could that have the potential to be #1 in the near future? Let us hope.

– And of course, Thunder holds the top spot, which means the constant change of our #1 stops right here. A part of me wishes that we kept the streak going, seeing as some people are starting to hate this one now. But me and some others beg to differ.

Hit-Bound:

  • Spencer – Whatever

– We have four new songs entering Hit-Bound this week. Let’s get the displeasing debut out of the way, first. With Rockstar being as big as it was, I’m not surprised to see Post Malone follow-up with another single in its stead. Enter I Fall Apart. I know many people are tired of hearing me rant about his music, but honestly I’m not fond of his music. While it’s slightly better than Rockstar, it’s still something I can’t get on board with. Sorry. I’ll talk more when it debuts.

– I’ll talk more about the other two debuts (Live In The Moment and Don’t Wanna Feel It) some other time. Right now, let’s dive in to Zedd’s latest single, which seems to be getting too much hate from some mainly because it’s basically Stay 2.0. But not me, because I very much enjoyed Stay for a while, though I’ll admit Get Low was pretty mediocre. His new single, The Middle features country star Maren Morris. Now right off the bat, I like Maren’s voice in this one and like Alessia Cara, she pretty much shines throughout the song. Sure, Zedd has done better and this is not his best song, but that doesn’t mean I can’t support this. I know I may feel very alone with this opinion, but I don’t care right now because I like it. I’ll have more on this when it debuts.

New Entrants

– Our first of two debuts this week comes from the return of Daya. You may remember her with her two singles, Hide Away and Sit Still, Look Pretty, as well as her collaboration with The Chainsmokers in Don’t Let Me Down, which was a huge success worldwide. This week, she brings us her new single titled New. While she does have a good voice, her songwriting skills are questionable, as evidenced in her first two singles, both of which were not to my liking. As for this one, I can’t really say I care for this one too much. I’ll say that it’s better than her two predecessors in terms of the lyrical content, and the production is nice. But really, this song is nothing memorable. I doubt this will be a hit, seeing as it flopped pretty much elsewhere. So we’ll see what happens going forward.

– As most of you probably know by now, Justin Timberlake has made his official comeback to music at the start of the year. Making his return to the American Top 40 this week, his new single is titled Filthy, the lead single off of his upcoming album, Man Of The Woods. I talked about this one in detail when it made its debut on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown two weeks ago. But to sum it all up, it’s a weird song with a bombastic funk that pretty much goes on throughout the song. There’s not a whole lot of singing going on; it’s just him doing a rap breakdown in most parts of the song. And don’t forget the music video which is him making a Steve Jobs impression. Now, it’s a song that I don’t really hate mainly because of some of the funny lines, but Justin Timberlake has done better. With a polarizing single like this one, I have a feeling it may not end up being the big comeback he was hoping for unless something drastic happens. We’ll see.

Don’t Want New, I Want Blurbs

There’s not a whole lot for me to say given that nothing really happened this week, so I’ll just keep it short.

– Our two exits consist of …Ready For It? and Faking It, both of which were very good songs and I wished they deserved better. It’s too bad the latter died out quickly, especially when Calvin Harris was coming off of his two predecessors, which had moderate success. As far as the former goes, the song’s under-performance chart-wise pretty much shows that people aren’t really buying into Taylor Swift’s new style of work and they much preferred what she had off of 1989. That aside, both of these songs will be missed by me.

– Once again, our Top 3 remains the same, so there’s really nothing to talk about here.

– One of the highlights for this week was the jumps from both River and Finesse, the latter which I’m very pleased about. With Finesse still gaining on all fronts, it won’t be surprising to see it take another big jump within the next week or so. Once again, I’m looking forward to seeing that one becoming a huge hit on this chart.

Imagine Dragons (4) – Week Of January 20, 2018

Hello, fam! I just realized this week that I have not done my Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Review. I’m currently in the process of re-working my post. I’ll have it ready for you guys to read sometime next week. And then after that, I’ll be prepping to work on my very first review of this year’s Grammy Awards, which takes place next weekend. I’m sure there will be a lot of good performances, but ultimately we’ll see what happens during the entire show. Right now, let us focus on talking about this week’s countdown, shall we? Now with that being said, here are the songs leaving us this week:

  • Zedd featuring Alessia Cara – Stay (#42) [Spent 4 Weeks At #1]

The Countdown:

New Entrants
– So, our only entrant comes from Maroon 5 with yet another single titled Wait, their fourth single off of their latest album Red Pill Blues. Coming into the song, I had thought Maroon 5 would continue redeeming themselves following its predecessor currently on the countdown. But that didn’t appear to be the case with this song (at least in my opinion). Now, it’s not nearly as bad as the other two representations I won’t mention, but there are flaws with their latest single, hence why I’m not fond of it. Adam’s vocals are okay, but nothing else really grabs my attention. Another problem I encountered with the song is that Adam basically has taken over the entire band. I’ve noticed this in some of their other recent singles and that worries me. Sure, some of those singles turned out well, but at some point, I would like for the entire band to work back together and actually be the band they used to be because right now, their current path has been a mixed bag (at least that’s what I think). I doubt that I’ll put this on my worst lists for this year because like I said, it’s not as bad as the other two predecessors (even though it’s still undesirable), and we still have a whole year ahead of us, so I’m sure worse songs will show up in the near future. As much as I don’t want this to be a hit, it’s looks likely given that Maroon 5 are still relevant, so I’ll be bracing myself for impact.

We Out Here Blurbin’ In Finesse

– Let’s begin with our exit. We say good-bye to Zedd featuring Alessia Cara – Stay, which had quite a long stay here (no pun intended). I did hear this one quite a bit throughout the week and I thought it could stay for another week, but that didn’t happen. I did enjoy the song when it was new, but it did eventually get old to me, so I didn’t mind seeing it go.

– Before introducing Look What You Made Me Do, Spyder Harrison mentioned that a principal from a local school did a parody of Blank Space when making an announcement about the kids being out of school because of the snow. I guess he decided to be funny and make the kids laugh by doing this, heh.

– The guest DJ that introduced Kiwi was from my hometown of Atlanta! Very nice!

– I had thought Lonely Girl would continue its upward trajectory after that big last week, but that was not the case as it went back to square one, dropping out of the Top 30 this week. Man, talk about a weak countdown run for this song!

– Wow. Out of absolutely nowhere, Lights Down Low make a shocking jump this week. Not very thrilled about this. But seeing as that one has just started to gain elsewhere, I probably shouldn’t have been that surprised. But yeah, I’m not happy.

– Before introducing Sorry Not Sorry, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Demi Lovato was on The Ellen Show performing her new single, Tell Me You Love Me and playing a game of “Who You’d Rather?”. I guess she was having a lot of fun with Ellen Degeneres that day. That said, I’m hoping Tell Me You Love Me makes its debut soon.

Fall Out Boy’s latest album, MANIA, dropped yesterday. And before anyone asks, no I don’t plan on reviewing it, seeing as its too time consuming for me and I have other stuff going on right now. That said, I’m quite shocked to see Hold Me Tight Or Don’t drop this week. I won’t be too heartbroken if this doesn’t become a hit, given that their recent singles have not caught on to the audience at all.

River took a surprising drop this week. Yikes! I’m sure it’ll make a recovery at some point, as this one is gaining elsewhere right now. But if it doesn’t, then I don’t really care either way.

Miss You took a nice jump this week. I’m hoping it’s a sign that Louis Tomlinson can have a big hit for once. Any song that has the classic rock vibes like this one is a plus for me.

– Before introducing Rockstar, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Post Malone got spooked when he was on “Ghost Adventures”. And there was a video of that which went viral. I wonder does he have a career in ghost hunting or something? Hmm…

One Foot back in the Top 20? Sure, count me in!

– I’m surprised to see Love So Soft still holding up well on this countdown despite it not being big elsewhere.  Even though this song doesn’t quite live up to her best work, I still really really like Kelly Clarkson because even after all those years, she’s still a very talented singer. I hope her next single from Meaning Of Life will catch on and actually become a big hit.

Too Much To Ask makes its arrival in the Top 10. Not very surprising since Hits 1 still loves One Direction. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if this ends up in the Top 5 at some point.

– Not surprised to see How Long in the Top 5 this week at #2. I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being #1 at some point in time, given that Charlie Puth has become relevant in the music industry. Also, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Charlie’s latest album has been delayed for reasons unknown. I guess we won’t be able to hear what he has to offer for another week or so. Bummer.

– Oh boy. Meant To Be has also reached a dangerous new peak at #3. It’s almost as nerve-racking when Body Like A Back Road hit there a few months ago. What’s even worse is the fact that its in the Top 3 on iTunes as well. Please, keep it away from #1 if necessary.

– On that note, Ed Sheeran couldn’t hang on to the #1 spot and thus the Imagine Dragons took it back this week. Once again, this constant change of our #1 songs just won’t stop. I’m hoping that Thunder can hold on tight to the top spot just so that Meant To Be can start moving down already and not pollute the Top 5.

Hit-Bound:

  • NF – Let You Down
  • Kesha featuring The Dap-Kings Horns – Woman
  • Camila Cabello – Never Be The Same

– We have only one debut on Hit-Bound this week. The Chainsmokers make their unexpected return not long after the departure of Something Just Like This from a month ago. This time, they bring us Sick Boy. Andrew Taggart’s vocals sound a little different, but he still showcases his talent all throughout the song. I do like the production in a way. It’s almost certain to make its debut soon, so I’ll have more words for it when that day comes.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk – I Feel It Coming: The Michael Jackson vibes in this song really pulls me in, and it was nice that we get to hear Daft Punk’s vocals. Still a huge favorite of mine from last year.
Ed Sheeran – Castle On The Hill: One of Ed Sheeran’s best songs lyrically. I love how it tells a story about friends doing different things. And the U2-like production is what grabs my attention the most.

QOTW: The Chainsmokers are back with their new single, Sick Boy. What are your thoughts on it and why? (In sentences, please)

New Entrants

– With Camila Cabello’s debut album as a solo artist being released this past week and Havana doing very well so far, it was no surprise that she would follow-up with a new single as the audience continues to embrace her. Enter Never Be The Same, the second single off of her self-titled album. I can’t really say I’m loving this too much. And the biggest reason for that is because of Camila’s vocals. Other than the chorus, she sounds too high pitched in some parts of the song, especially in the pre-chorus. It’s pretty obvious that she still needs to work on her vocal lessons. This was the reason why many people didn’t really like Camila before she improved herself with Havana. As for the rest of the song itself, the production is pretty good. But the lyrics kinda leave something to be desired and like I said, I’m not sold on Camila’s vocals. I may have it in blue for now, but my opinion could change.

Ed Sheeran continues to chug along by being featured on some side projects, such as End Game. This week, he decides to collaborate with Eminem who makes his return in their single titled River. Now, I didn’t have much of an opinion on the song because this one kinda came out of nowhere. But after a few listens, I started to come around to it. Basically, this song is about a bad relationship and how he regrets doing what he did to his lover. I do like Ed’s contribution in this one, and Eminem proves to me that he’s still one of the best rappers. Though, I’ll admit, Eminem doesn’t quite have the charisma like he once did. When comparing to his older singles such as Love The Way You Lie and a few others, I can tell the difference. In terms of everything else about the song in general, the chorus is nice and I do like the production. While it’s a pretty good song, I can’t say that this will stick with me in the big picture.

– Again, if you’re into the new Bruno Mars like me and a few others, I’m sure you were looking forward to his latest release. This week, he makes his return with his fourth single off of 24K Magic, titled Finesse. And he decided to make a remix by bringing in Cardi B., a newcomer in the music industry whose single Bodak Yellow (Money Moves) became her biggest hit in 2017. When Chunky debuted on Hit-Bound, I thought that would be his next single. But unfortunately, that was not the case. I’m hoping Chunky can be its successor down the road. Right now, I’m glad that he released Finesse as a single because it is an amazing song. Bruno showcases his talent and charisma like he always does, which was the biggest reason why I love the original version so much. But the remix manages to step it up a notch, mainly because Cardi B. actually makes a nice contribution for once. The music video is basically a dedicated to the classic TV show, In Living Color, which I watched since I was a child. I’ve pretty much said all I needed to say about this one. Sure, we’re still have a whole year ahead of us, but right now this song is definitely a candidate for My Top 10 songs of the year and maybe even Top 5. And given that it just recently hit the Top 3 on Billboard, I have a feeling that it’s going to get some love on this chart as well, and I am ready for it (No reference to Taylor Swift).

So Let The Blurbs Run

– We’ll begin the week by talking about our exits. To start, No Promises had a very good countdown run for a song that never really hit the Top 5. I did enjoy it while it lasted, but I don’t mind seeing it go. Unforgettable did pretty well too, and I’m glad that it got the recognition it deserved because it was a really good song overall. Finally, we lost What About Us, which was another great song that did quite well. P!NK has never disappointed me with her music so far and this song was no exception. I was happy with the success that it had on Hits 1 and many other charts. That song will be mostly missed by me.

– Our Top 3 remains the same, so nothing to really talk about here.

– We have two new entrants in the Top 5. Unfortunately, one of those entrants is from Rockstar, which has reached a dangerous new peak at #5. The sad thing about it is that this song still has a chance to hit #1 at some point, given that it’s still very popular right now. I hope our Top 3 can stay the same.

– But sitting right in front of it at #4 is the entrant from New Rules. That which I’m definitely pleased about and I’ll most certainly take it over #5 any day. It’s good to see Dua Lipa finally get the recognition she deserves.

– Well, it looks like What Lovers Do won’t be getting the #1 spot unfortunately, seeing as that one is starting to decline elsewhere. Hopefully, it can hang around the countdown for a little longer.

– We had two songs jumping big this week. First off, I’m not too thrilled about the jump from I Like Me Better. However, I’m pleased to see LOVE. take a big jump as well. I’m hoping Kendrick Lamar can get another hit like he did with HUMBLE. last year.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Caroline by Aminé: All I can say about this is his vocals are obnoxious, and the way he tries to sing makes me cringe. No, that is not how you make a good first impression as an artist.
Shape Of You by Ed Sheeran: Ah, yes. Ed Sheeran’s big return to music. I like it’s simplicity, and it does have some funny lines. I like how he tries to make something different.

And one last thing before I conclude my post. There is a rankdown going on in the blogging community which I’m participating in. The rankdown in question is about the 2017 Hits 1 Year-End list. Here is the link below, as well as instructions on how the game works:

New Entrants

– Okay, so this was a big week in terms of entrants. We’ll begin with G-Eazy making his return to the countdown. And guess what? He decided to collaborate with his girlfriend, Halsey, who currently has a representation (Bad At Love) on the countdown which has spent 2 weeks at #1. Their new single is titled Him & I. My initial reaction wasn’t necessarily the greatest at first listen. But after a while, I’ve started to grow into it. I do think the production, while not necessarily the best, is pretty solid all around. Halsey’s vocals are on point for the most part. I do think G-Eazy is one of the best rappers in this current music climate. My main concern is that they somewhat lack the personality and charisma to make this a better song for me. Maybe I’m over-exaggerating a bit here, and I could be wrong. I do kinda like this for now, but I can see myself getting sick of this soon.

– So, if you are into the new Bruno Mars like I am, then you’re probably looking forward to hearing more new music from him. It’s unfortunate that there’s people here who are still too jaded by Uptown Funk being overplayed on radio to give him a chance. But that’s not the biggest reason people loathe his new style of work. It’s because he seemingly comes off as a brag rapper that talks about nonsense and what not. When he made his return back in 2016 with the release of 24K Magic, most people here in the blogging community started to turn on him. But some people, including myself, YouTube critics, and others defended it, saying that he has the talent to back it all up. Ever since then, no one really wanted to hear from Bruno anymore. And unfortunately for some, he makes his return to the countdown once again. This time around, he’s bringing us some Finesse. Many fans, including myself and others, were begging for him to push this or Chunky to be the next single off of 24K Magic. We all thought that Chunky was going to be the single he’s chosen, given that it made its arrival on Hit-Bound back in October. Unfortunately, we were proven wrong as it didn’t graduate Hit-Bound. As it would turn out, it was never released as the next single. Little did we know that he would instead decide to release a remix of a song that many wanted him to push as the next single off of the near-masterpiece of the album. The remix of the song titled Finesse features upcoming hip-hop artist Cardi B., whose single Bodak Yellow became a big hit in the U.S. And it’s pretty safe to say that she may have another hit on her hands, as the remix of Finesse is taking off in terms of sales, streaming, and radio. Anyway, let’s get onto the reviewing the song. Not just the original version, but the remix as well. Bruno definitely showcases that his vocal talent all throughout the song. My goodness, he has the charisma to pull it off. As for the production, I like the 90’s vibe to it, mainly because it has the new jack swing that I’ve adored for years ever since I was a kid. All of this alone is the reason why I’m in love with the original version. But making things MUCH better is that Cardi B. added more life to the song in the remix. I criticized her for trying to be like Nicki Minaj in Bodak Yellow. I still feel this way because I think Nicki Minaj is better than her. However, in this song, I think that she has improved a little bit. She actually made a good contribution in parts of the song, especially at the beginning. The music video reminds me of the TV show, In Living Color, which I watched since I was a child and it brought back so many memories. I love everything about the song, not only the original, but the remix as well. From the production on down to Bruno’s vocal talent, it’s safe to say that this song is a definite candidate for my Top 10 or even my Top 5 songs of 2018. Sure, it may be too early in the year and there’s still more music to come. But anyway, I’m absolutely in love with this song, and there’s talk that this could potentially be #1 on Billboard. That which I’ll be very pleased to see it happen. I’m definitely looking forward to this being massively overplayed on the radio when I get in my car.

– And now, we have the all important debut of the week. For those of you who’ve either been living under a rock or just simply have not heard by now, Justin Timberlake made his official return to music last week. I’m sure many know by now that he would be performing at the Super Bowl for the second time. Upon hearing the news, rumors began to swirl that he would release new music around that time and sure enough, he did. The first time he performed at the Super Bowl was back in 2004, when there was a controversy regarding Janet Jackson in which there was a “wardrobe malfunction” incident. I won’t get into that detail. Let’s talk about Justin Timberlake’s return to music. The last time we saw him was all the way back in summer of 2016, when he brought us Can’t Stop The Feeling!, which was #1 for 10 weeks and thus, became one of the biggest summer hits of 2016. That one was a favorite of mine, and it made me want to dance, dance, dance. Now this week, he returns to the countdown with his brand new song titled Filthy, the lead single off of his upcoming album, Man Of The Woods. Most people’s initial reaction wasn’t really great when I paid attention to their takes on the song. Once I took a listen, I could see where people were getting at. I think the biggest reason is the production of the song, which is pretty weird for the most part. It starts out with arena rock music, and then morphs into the weird-like bombastic funk that goes all throughout the song. Justin’s vocals sound a lot different when compared to his other singles. There’s not a whole lot of actual singing going on. He’s basically doing a rap breakdown in most parts of the song. And then, there’s the music video, which is basically him trying to be Steve Jobs. He’s showing off a robot that does a lot of dancing and what not. As for my overall thoughts on the song, I’ll just say that I don’t really hate the song. Sure, I may still be mixed on this seeing as there’s some weird stuff going on in terms of the production, but there may be something about it that could make it a guilty pleasure of mine. When I hear Justin singing, it kinda reminds of Prince who was able to sing like that. It’s not just his vocals; the song does have some Prince vibes to it. It seems that he’s been listening to a lot of his music lately, hence why he decided to make a song that has elements similar to what we hear in some of Prince’s singles. Anyway, it’s a pretty weird song that I don’t really hate at all. But let’s be honest here, it’s nowhere near his best work. I do, however, like how he tries to be creative and starts experimenting on new sounds. Whether this song grows on me or not, we’ll just have to see. Only time will tell on that.

Put Your Filthy Blurbs All Over Me

– As always, we’ll begin with our exits. First off, we had two songs which lasted quite longer and did better than I expected to. No Promises I did enjoy for a while, and I thought it was a good collaboration between the two artists. Though I did start to grow out of it, it’s still a pretty good song that did well. Next, we have the departure of Glorious, which did much better here despite not doing so hot elsewhere. Finally, we have the important exit, in which an Ed Sheeran song is officially no more. I thought Shape Of You was going to leave first, but I was wrong. It was Castle On The Hill that makes its departure this week, and with it bring the number of songs by Ed Sheeran down to 5. It was one of the most well-written songs that talks about life, in which friends do different things. Even though it wasn’t as big as its predecessor was, it was still respectable in its own right. This song definitely showcased Ed’s skills as a songwriter. I’m hoping we get more songs like this. With all that being said, it’s safe to say that this song will be sadly missed by me.

– Before introducing Kiwi, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Harry Styles has a number of tattoos. I wonder did he hire someone to do all of this for him? I’ll bet they do a real good job at it.

Stay has now officially fallen to the bottom of the countdown. I wouldn’t be too surprised if that one ends up leaving within the next week or so. I’m pretty sure some will be rejoicing over its departure, given that it’s been here for a long time and not very many people enjoy this song anymore.

– Unfortunately, it looks like Hot Damn is starting to die out. Given that this song isn’t really popular elsewhere, I’m not too surprised by this drop. Still, I’m hoping it can hang around for a little longer.

– Alright, so I would like to say Happy Anniversary to Shape Of You. This song made its debut this time last year and thus would go on to become Ed Sheeran’s biggest hit of his career. A huge thank you for the voters for making this happen!

– Both Praying and …Ready For It? have now officially dropped out of the Top 30 for the first time in months. It’s kinda sad that these songs are both at the end of their lifespan. Oh well. It was really nice having them around.

– I’m not thrilled about the big drop from Dusk Till Dawn either. I was hoping this song would catch on to the audience, but it just was not meant to be (Not a Bebe Rexha reference). Shame on you, America for not making this a bigger hit.

– Speaking of songs that weren’t big hits elsewhere, we have Galway Girl taking a huge drop this week. A little saddening, but I’m happy that it managed to do well given that Hits 1 loves Ed Sheeran. I’m hoping it can stay for a little longer, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem given that Hits 1 still loves Ed Sheeran right now.

– After struggling for a few weeks, Lonely Girl makes a reasonable jump to the Top 30 this week. Like I said, I don’t really care for the song, but I’ll live with it for now.

– However, I’m pretty pleased to see End Game taking a big jump as well. Now the question is, will this actually become a hit? I would like it to, but I kinda doubt it somehow, given that Taylor’s recent singles haven’t really took off like the singles did from her album, 1989. And Spyder, you really need to step up your game a bit. That song did not have the Biggest Jump Of The Week this week. 😛

– On that note, it’s no surprise that Hold Me Tight Or Don’t would make that huge second-week jump. Better get your facts straight Spyder. 😛

– I’m surprised to see that Believer is still hanging on despite the fact that it died out a long time ago. Could this potentially last year like Shape Of You did? Hmm…

– Good thing Rockstar tumbled down after only one week in the Top 10. Hopefully it stays out of that region for good. But now that I’ve said it, watch it roar back up next week. Also, Spyder Harrison mentioned upon introducing the song that Post Malone took a picture together with a Koala. One thing’s for sure, though; he seems to have a love for animals.

– Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like What Lovers Do is going for that #1 after all. Not too surprised about this since this one is dying out elsewhere. Plus, they do have another single in its stead that is currently on Hit-Bound.

– But as a consolation, we do have Good Old Days entering the Top 10 for the first time. It’s nice to see a song that talks about old memories starting to catch on with the listeners.

– *sees #6* Blech. No. Just no. This is Bebe Rexha’s highest peaking single. It has now peaked higher than I Got You Honestly, I don’t get what people like about this song. It’s not even country at all. Seriously, I Got You was amazing and we all know it. Meant To Be is a huge disappointment and the fact that it’s getting overrated only makes me hate the song even more now.

– And of course, Ed Sheeran takes back the #1 spot this week. With the remixes plus the original version still doing hot elsewhere, it’s not a surprise that this happened here. This constant changing of our #1 just keeps on coming. But seeing as our Top 5 is filled with good songs that I still like, I perfectly fine with any song hitting #1 at this point.

Hit-Bound:

  • Sofi Tukker featuring NERVO, Alisa Ueno, and The Knocks – Best Friend
  • P!NK – Beautiful Trauma
  • Alan Walker featuring Noah Cyrus and Digital Farm Animals – All Falls Down
  • Clean Bandit featuring Julia Michaels – I Miss You

  • Imagine Dragons – Whatever It Takes
  • NF – Let You Down
  • Troye Sivan – My My My! (DEBUT)
  • Camila Cabello – Never Be The Same
  • WØLVES – Animal
– So, we have only two entrants this week. First, we have more Kesha. This time, she brings us Woman, which is the next single off of the masterpiece of a album that is Rainbow. Although I prefer Learn To Let Go at this point, this will do for now. Woman does have that vibe that gets you going. Those who like this can explain it better than I can. But yeah, I’m in love with this and I hope it debuts soon.

– If you remember Troye Sivan, then you probably know that he brought us Youth back in 2016. That one did well peaking in the Top 5. This week, he makes is return with the single, My My My!. I do like the chorus in this one, and he showcase his vocal talent pretty well. I’ll have more words should it eventually make its debut.

– Honestly, I’m so sick of AJR is not even funny. Sober Up is only getting more annoying after each listen. And I don’t just say that because of Weak either. Actually, yes I did. Let’s just leave it at that. But the point is, this better leave Hit-Bound and NOT graduate to the Weekend Countdown, because if it does, hooooo boy.

– On the note of mediocrity, forget what I said earlier when I thought Spencer – Whatever was a good song. Yeah, after repeated listens, I’m starting to find that his vocals aren’t really good at all. Plus, I’m not a fan of the production. And no, creating a music video with your iPhone is not cool at all. I’m hoping it doesn’t debut either, but if it does, I’ll talk more about it.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Machine Gun Kelly featuring Camila Cabello – Bad Things: My biggest problem with this song is that Camila doesn’t sound too good in most parts of the song, and Machine Gun Kelly doesn’t show too much of a personality and charisma. It’s premise is pretty dull across the board, hence why some people don’t like this
Ed Sheeran – Shape Of You: It was one year ago today that Ed Sheeran made his official return to music. I like what this song has to offer, and it’s quite a different sound for him when compared to his previous singles.

New Entrants

– Our first of three entrants comes from the arrival of Lauv, with the single titled I Like Me Better. I talked about this one two months ago when it debuted on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. But to recap, it’s really not an interesting song for me. I do like the guys vocals, so that isn’t really an issue. But it’s the production and its premise that kill the song for me. Again, there’s nothing really interesting about this song and I doubt I’ll remember this in a year or so. Let’s move on.

– Next, we have Demi Lovato with the next single as Sorry Not Sorry continues to fade elsewhere. Enter Tell Me You Love Me. I find this to be better than its predecessor. Demi’s vocals are much better in this one. I love the powerhouse chorus all throughout the song. The lyrical content is also well written, in which she needs someone to love whenever she’s having a bad day (Well, any day actually). The gospel direction Demi is taking is a good one. I’m hoping for success out of this song.

– Finally, we have the return of Kendrick Lamar with his latest single, LOVE. off of his album, DAMN.. While it’s not necessarily one of my favorite singles from him, at least he can showcase that he’s a talented hip-hop artist. The production may not be the best, but I do like everything else about this song. Do I see it sticking with me in the long run? Probably not, but for now I do kinda like this.

Oh, Tell Me You Love Blurbs

– Alright, so as I mentioned in the introduction, this was an important week in terms of our exits. First off, it’s about time we say good riddance to Mi Gente. As I mentioned in my Year-End posts, this song was an embarrassment to the Latin genre and frankly, I don’t know how we let a song caught on to the public. I’ll bet Gloria Estefan is somewhere fuming over the fact that this was #3 on Billboard, and that was thanks to the remix with Beyoncé, which didn’t make the song any better. Honestly, this song really made my ears scream for mercy and I wish this would leave airplay for good. So yeah, it’s safe to say that Mi Gente will never be missed by me. The other two, however, were big favorites of mine from last year. It Ain’t Me was Kygo’s first big hit and I enjoyed it from the start. He’s definitely proven himself to be one of the best upcoming DJ’s around. His album, Kids In Love, definitely has a lot of good singles worth listening to. That said, this song will be missed by me. But more importanly, we have the departure of Praying. This song deserve some final words from me. It brought Kesha back into the spotlight after her abuse with her producer, Dr. Luke. The well written lyrical content, her vocals, and the amazing production made me fall madly in love with that song. It was a huge favorite among the blogging community and YouTube critics alike. I’ve said this before, but this song was basically EVERYTHING I LOVE about Kesha as an artist. I’m hoping some of her singles from her latest album, Rainbow, would catch on because it is legitimately fantastic. So, good-bye Praying. You will most definitely be missed by me.

Meant To Be is only getting worse after each listen. And no, I don’t say that because I’m still jaded by a certain song I won’t talk about. The point is, I hope it doesn’t get any higher. But now that I said it, watch it take a massive jump next week.

– Looks like this may unfortunately be the end for …Ready For It? by Taylor Swift as it took a big drop out of the Top 20. I’m hoping it can hang around for a little longer.

– It was of course expected that Him & I would take a big jump on its second week. I’m starting to grow into the song a little bit, so I’m kinda happy with this.

– Not much has changed in the Top 5, except that all of the songs have moved some spots, with Perfect by Ed Sheeran reaching a new peak of #2. I wouldn’t be too surprised if it ends up being our next #1 song down the road. I’m hoping it can happen someday, and with both remixes of the songs gaining popularity, that shouldn’t be a problem at all.

– On that note, we have Havana still holding the top spot. That which I’m thrilled about. Also, what you’re seeing is not an error: it’s actually spending it’s 5th week at #1. The reason being is because Ryan Seacrest counts the two frozen weeks (the last two weeks of 2017) when there was no official AT40 chart for those weeks (They did the Top 40 of 2017 for two weeks). So yeah.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Say It by Flume featuring Tove Lo: Flume has proven himself to be a good DJ, and Tove Lo’s vocals shine. It’s too bad that after Talking Body, she can’t seem to catch on with the public.
Slumber Party by Britney Spears featuring Tinsahe: I do like the production, but Britney’s vocals sounds a little too frail to make this a little better.
Fake Love by Drake: This song is where he really hit rock bottom. Come on, Drake. You really made me cringe when you try to hit those high notes. And even without that, his vocals are terrible all throughout the song. One of his worst songs to date.
I Got You by Bebe Rexha: I pretty much explained this one in My Top 50 Songs of 2017. But yeah, Bebe’s vocals are amazing, and the chorus is a powerhouse.
Million Reasons by Lady Gaga: This song I talked briefly about in one of my posts, but yeah it’s more likable than Perfect Illusion. I do like her voice for the most part. It’s performance at the Super Bowl fueled this song’s success. But after that, it ran out of steam so quickly that it missed the Year-End list.

2017: A Year In Review, Part 5: My Top 50 Songs Of 2017

Hello fam! For this post, I will be counting down my Top 50 songs of 2017! Now a few posts ago, I reviewed my Bottom 10 songs of 2017. You can check it out here if you haven’t already. But what about the songs the were actually good? There’s plenty of songs that I liked this year. Some I have come around to; others I loved from the start. With that in mind, let’s get on with it!

Normally, most of the blogging community would count down the songs that made it to the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. However, for my blog, I’m going to bend the rules a little bit. Instead of just counting down the songs that were on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown, I will also include those that charted on the American Top 40. The reason being is because I recently started reviewing the American Top 40, and I wanted to try something different. For a song to make My Top 45, there are certain requirements that have to be met. Let’s go over some of the rules.

1) A song must spend at least one week in either countdown (Hits 1 Weekend Countdown, American Top 40, or both).

2) Any song from Hits 1 that was on Hit-Bound or YouTube 15, but never made it to the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown is not eligible to be on the list. The only exception to the rule is if it spent at least one week on the American Top 40, as I mentioned above.

3) Songs that debuted in late November or December on either countdown are not eligible to be on this list UNLESS it spent only one week on either countdown (meaning they debuted one week and exited the next week). Otherwise, they will be saved for my 2018 rankings.

And here you go. Those are the eligibility requirements for the songs. Now let’s dive right in and talk about my favorite songs of 2017! But first, I will mention several songs that debuted a little late to be eligible for this list and they’ll be in consideration for next year’s rankings, whether it be my Top 45 songs, or my Bottom 10. Here they are:

  • Eminem featuring Ed Sheeran – River
  • Harry Styles – Kiwi
  • Liam Payne – Bedroom Floor
  • Louis Tomlinson – Miss You
  • Macklemore featuring Kesha – Good Old Days
  • Marshmello featuring Khalid – Silence
  • Selena Gomez featuring Marshmello – Wolves
  • Sofi Tukker – Best Friend
  • Symon – Lonely Girl
  • Taylor Swift featuring Ed Sheeran and Future – End Game
  • Walk The Moon – One Foot
  • X Ambassadors – Ahead Of Myself

Okay. So with that out of the way, I am ready to begin reviewing my Top 50 Songs of 2017. But before we get to that, there are several songs that were good, but they just miss the final cut. They were so close to making the list, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Let’s go through my honorable mentions. Here they are:

  • Aaron Carter – Sooner Or Later
  • Calvin Harris featuring Kehlani and Lil’ Yatchy – Faking It
  • The Chainsmokers – Honest
  • Charlie Puth – Attention
  • Cheat Codes featuring Demi Lovato – No Promises
  • Demi Lovato – Sorry Not Sorry
  • Drake – Passionfruit
  • Erin Bowman – Good Time Good Life
  • Evaride – Heartless
  • Hey Violet – Break My Heart
  • Hey Violet – Hoodie
  • Imagine Dragons – Believer
  • Jon Bellion – Overwhelming
  • Jonas Blue featuring William Singe – Hey Mama
  • Kaleo – Way Down We Go
  • Kehlani featuring G-Eazy – Good Life
  • Kelly Clarkson – Love So Soft
  • Lady Gaga – Million Reasons
  • Lukas Graham – You’re Not There
  • Martin Garrix featuring Dua Lipa – Scared To Be Lonely
  • Niall Horan – Slow Hands
  • Nick Jonas – Find You
  • Ocean Park Standoff – Good News
  • Rag’n’Bone Man – Human
  • Sam Smith – Too Good At Goodbyes
  • TWENTY ØNE PILØTS – Heavydirtysoul
  • ZAYN featuring Taylor Swift – I Don’t Wanna Live Forever
  • Zedd featuring Alessia Cara – Stay

With all that in mind I will now finally present to you my Top 50 songs of 2017! These were the songs that all stood out to me all year long. There were a majority of the songs I liked from the start, while there were some that took a while for me to grow into. But overall, all of the songs I’m about to review were all good, they had to make the list. Let’s get right into it!

50. Linkin Park – One More Light
This was a tribute single to Chester Bennington, who passed away unexpectedly this year from suicide. It definitely fits the somber mood. I do love the vocals for the most part. It’s a sad, but sweet song at the same time.

49. Linkin Park featuring Kiiara – Heavy
This song came rather unexpectedly for a Linkin Park comeback single. Even more unexpected was the fact that they decided to collaborate with Kiiara. She previously made her presence back in 2016 with her debut single Gold, which was widely panned by bloggers and YouTube critics alike. In this song, it was a different story. Kiiara actually improved on her vocals. I do like the lyrical content all throughout the song. While this wasn’t Linkin Park’s best work thus far, I still loved it, mainly for what this song had to offer. It was good to hear from Chester Bennington before he passed away unexpectedly. He will be missed.

48. Portugal. The Man – Feel It Still
I love when indie artists like these guys can get an unexpected hit in the US. I thought this song was okay at first, but it eventually grew on me. Even though I’m not necessarily big on the vocals, everything else about this song is pretty good for the most part. In a way, I do think it’s catchy. I’m glad this was successful.

47. Louis Tomlinson featuring Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals – Back To You
Louis Tomlinson impressed me in 2017 when he released his collaboration with Bebe Rexha in this single. I do think it’s one of the best songs Louis has released so far in his solo career. The best thing I love about this song is Bebe Rexha. I love how she basically takes over the entire song. The way she hits those high notes is amazing. I also like how their vocals blend together, especially in the second chorus, plus the final one near the end. It was never a big hit like I wanted to me, but Louis managed to win me over with this song.

46. Hailee Steinfeld & Alesso featuring Florida Georgia Line and Watt – Let Me Go
After Starving became a success, it was a no-brainer that Hailee Steinfeld would continue to make her presence known in the world of music. Back in the spring, she released a follow-up with Most Girls, which I did enjoy for a while, but didn’t quite stick with me in the long run. When Let Me Go came around, I was impressed. This is basically a better version of Starving, except it has better lyrical content and Hailee Steinfeld shines more in this song. I love the verses from Florida Georgia Line as well. Not only that, but Alesso did a nice job as a DJ throughout the song. He able to showcase what he can really do. It’s definitely a sweet song, but upbeat at the same time. It’s doing quite well as of right now elsewhere and I’m glad because it’s Hailee Steinfeld’s best single thus far.

45. Mono Mind – Save Me A Place
You know, I love it when Hits 1 picks up songs you probably won’t hear anywhere else. This song is special in every sense of the word. It was unlike anything I’ve heard before on the radio. Simply put, it’s an electronic dance song that you don’t hear often. One of the things I love about this song is the electronic vocals all throughout. Plus, the female vocalist who sings in the chorus sounds amazing. It reminds me of Ellie Goulding, an artist who I absolutely love. The verses aren’t really much, but everything else about this song is great. It did end up being mildly successful on Hits 1, barely missing out on the Top 5 with a peak at #6. I’m glad Mono Mind was able to make a great first impression with this single. I’m looking forward to hearing more from them soon.

44. Imagine Dragons – Thunder
Coming off their success of Believer, Imagine Dragons continue to take advantage of it and decided to release this song as the next single off of Evolve. While I do still like Believer, I may like this even more. There’s just something about this song that pulls me in. I think it has to do with the line, “Lightning, then the thunder”, which in a way grabs my attention. I do like the chorus for the most part. Overall, they won me over with this song and I still enjoy it. It may be a long time until I get sick of it.

43. Logic featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid – 1-800-273-8255
Most songs talk about love, relationships, and some other stuff people can relate to. However, this song talks about one topic that we never hear in music: suicide. It’s sad that people take their own lives due to a variety of reasons, such as bullying, depression, etc. I’m glad Logic was able to create this song that talks about suicide, and he was able to execute it perfectly. I do love the verses and the chorus is mesmerizing. This did well on Billboard after they performed it at the MTV Video Music Awards. I am happy that it was successful because frankly, it’s a good song that deserves recognition about a topic that no one talks about in music.
42. Fall Out Boy – Champion
Fall Out Boy disappointed me with the disastrous comeback single, Young And Menace. However, they improved BIG TIME with this song. It reminded me of their classic music. The intro where they play the electric guitar was really nice and it made me think that they improved and sure enough, I was right. The chorus, the production, and the vocals are really good. That’s all I’ve got to say for this song. Too bad this failed to take off elsewhere.

41. Steve Aoki featuring Louis Tomlinson – Just Hold On
This song was made basically as a tribute to Louis Tomlinson’s mother, who passed away after an illness. It was nice to hear from Steve Aoki again. He did previously had Back 2 U on Hit-Bound, but it failed to graduate. Now, here he is with my #41 song of the year. Steve Aoki did a solid job as a DJ all throughout the song. I love the production. Louis’s vocals are pretty good for the most part. I’m glad Hits 1 treated it better, because Louis is from One Direction and they love anything by the band in general. And that’s perfectly fine by me because it’s a good song overall.

40. Bebe Rexha – I Got You
One of Bebe Rexha’s best songs as a solo artist. I love the production on this one. She definitely showcases her vocal talent all throughout the song. It shows what she’s really capable of as an artist. As soon as we get to the chorus, we hear the “oh-na-na-na-na”. That’s one of the best things I like about this song. It’s too bad that this one failed to take off elsewhere, but I still love it no matter what and I’m hoping we get more songs like this.

39. Maroon 5 featuring SZA – What Lovers Do
Maroon 5 disappointed me with their two recent singles (Don’t Wanna Know and Cold). To say the least, I had low expectations coming in to their next single. As it turned out, I was quite impressed for the most part. While it may be a little repetitive (especially in the chorus), the rest of the song is pretty divine. SZA herself made a nice contribution to the song. To me, her contribution is much better than both Kendrick Lamar and Future. Both Adam’s and SZA’s verses flow very nicely throughout the song. It’s good to see the better song from Maroon 5 become a hit late in the year.

38. Macklemore featuring Skylar Grey – Glorious
This was Macklemore’s first single without Ryan Lewis, when the duo decided to break up. He decided to collaborate with an artist not very well-known to the public, by the name of Skylar Grey. After listening to the song in full, I was happy with how the collaboration turned out. Macklemore showcases his rapping skills all throughout the song. Even though he’s not as good as Eminem, at least he shows me what he is capable of. Skylar’s vocals are pretty divine as well, especially in the chorus. I’m happy that Macklemore made a comeback single and I’m hoping for more.

37. French Montana featuring Swae Lee – Unforgettable
I never talked about this song too much during the time I was reviewing the American Top 40. You’ve probably seen me put this in green throughout its entire tenure, which basically tells you my thoughts on the song. But allow me to explain. There’s plenty of things I like about the song. One of the best things about it is the verses. The production is pretty good as well. Those who like it can explain this one better than I can. But simply put, I’m in love with this one.

36. Jason Derulo featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Nicki Minaj – Swalla
On paper, when I saw the title of the song alone, I was scared. But somehow, it actually turned out really well. This song is pretty weird (but the good kind of weird), but there’s something to like about it. This is basically a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s definitely different than what we hear from Jason Derulo. Some of the verses are pretty cool. Overall, it’s a weird, but good song.

35. Martin Garrix featuring Bebe Rexha – In The Name Of Love
The year was 2016, and this song was trending on the YouTube 15. When I first heard it, I was pretty darn impressed. I was happy that it made it to the countdown in late 2016 because it’s a really good song. The production is amazing. I absolutely LOVE the way Bebe Rexha can hit those high notes. Her vocal performance is easily the best thing about this song. Martin Garrix has proven to be a really good DJ. It’s too bad that this, along with its successor, failed to become a big hit elsewhere. I do wish that Martin Garrix deserved better.

34. ZAYN featuring Sia – Dusk Till Dawn
Before this song came around, ZAYN’s music had been quite a mixed bag for many. I did enjoy Pillowtalk and I Don’t Wanna Live Forever for a while, but Still Got Time was a snooze fest and just wasn’t good. He decides to redeem himself a bit by collaborating with Sia with the song, Dusk Till Dawn. My initial reaction to this song was not all that great from the first listen. I thought it was too underwhelming for my tastes, mainly because of the vocals alone. I could tell when I first heard it that these two were either half-asleep when they recorded the song. As it would eventually turn out, they were building it up leading the chorus, which is the best thing about the songs. Their vocals shine and blend together all throughout the song. Even though it’s not a big hit elsewhere, both artists have managed to win me over with this song.

33. John Legend – Love Me Now
It had been a while since we heard from John Legend in terms of his solo music. Other than his collaboration with Meghan Trainor in Like I’m Gonna Lose You (which I was in love with and I still do enjoy it), he’s been pretty quiet. But then this song came around in late 2016, and it was nice to hear from him again. I didn’t fully loved it right away, though. I thought it was just pretty good, but I warmed up to it in record time. It’s basically a love song that talks about wanting to love someone now while he/she still can. While it’s not quite his best work thus far, it’s certainly an upbeat track that has good lyrical content that we all can relate. It’s too bad this didn’t do so well on the charts. I was hoping the public would catch on to this song, but it just wasn’t meant to be unfortunately. No matter what, I still love this song and I’m hoping for more from him.

32. Panic! At The Disco – L.A. Devotee
In 2016, Hits 1 shared their newfound love for Panic! At The Disco when Victorious became a huge hit on their station, hitting #1 during its second tenure on the countdown. Then, they brought us Death Of A Bachelor, which while not quite having the same success as its predecessor still peaked in the Top 10 at #7. When Death Of A Bachelor started to decline, Hits 1 decided to pick up one more single from them. And that song was L.A. Devotee, a much more fast-paced song with some rock elements to it. Brendon Urie shines a lot more here, especially in the chorus. It sounds like he’s having a lot of fun when he recorded this single. I love upbeat songs with rock vibes to it. I’m glad this became another moderate success on Hits 1, even though their music isn’t as big elsewhere. This song was their last stand and since Hits 1 isn’t picking up anymore singles from them, I’ll be waiting a while for something new to come along.

31. Jon Bellion – All Time Low
Adrian’s #10 pick of 2016. He can explain this one better. I do like what this song has to offer. Jon Bellion sounds pretty good all throughout the song, and I like the production. Looking at the lyrical content, it talks about a relationship being so bad that it’s reached an all time low, hence the title. I’m glad this somewhat became a minor hit, and I’m sure Adrian is too.

30. P!NK – What About Us
Adrian can explain this one in detail better than I can. But simply put, P!NK is one of those rare, one-of-a-kind artists that almost never disappoints me with her music. This song is no exception. Even though it doesn’t quite live up to her best work thus far, I can’t deny that this song is still great by any means. She showcases her vocal talent all throughout the song and I like the production. That’s probably all I can say about this song. It’s very pleasing to see this hit #1 on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. I’m glad it was successful and again, it was another win for P!NK.

29. Adele – Water Under The Bridge
Many fans of Adele wanted this song to be the next single off of the masterpiece of an album that is 25 and sure enough, they got their wish. Water Under The Bridge has more going on in terms of the production than its predecessor. The chorus is amazing all throughout. I love her voice and I like the build-up leading to the chorus. The lyrical content is also well written. While this didn’t do quite as well as her predecessor, at least it was a respectable hit and managed to make the Billboard and Hits 1 Year-End lists. Thanks Adele, for pleasing my ears again with this song.

28. Shawn Mendes – Mercy
Most music critics loathed Treat You Better, mainly because Shawn Mendes comes off as a whiny guy who tries to win a girl’s heart. I may have enjoyed it at first, but it didn’t take me long to realize what the critics were talking about. And soon enough, I got sick of it. Now his successor, Mercy, was a different story. It’s better written than Treat You Better, and Shawn Mendes makes better use of his instruments. I also love the chorus all throughout, especially the final chorus, which pulls me in. This song did very well on Hits 1 and could’ve been #1 had Ed Sheeran didn’t make a comeback. Anyway, I do still enjoy this song and is one of Shawn’s best thus far.

27. Bruno Mars – Versace On The Floor
Oh, Bruno Mars. Do you not disappoint. When compared to some of the other singles off of 24K MagicVersace On The Floor is not one of those party songs that make you want to have fun and go wild. It’s more of a calm song designed for people who want to slow dance instead. Bruno Mars is definitely a talented singer, and he showcases his raw vocals all throughout the song. I recently watched his special on TV and he has proven that he can sing live. It’s too bad that it didn’t live up to its predecessors in terms of success. Still, that doesn’t stop me from supporting this song.

26. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber – Despacito
Like I said before, I am not making friends with many people right now because I’m still not sick of this song. Most consider this to be the most overrated song of 2017, but I beg to differ. Despacito is one of the biggest Latin crossover hits that we’ve had in a long time. Of course, you can thank the remix with Justin Bieber for allowing that to happen. But even without the remix, I was fond of this song to begin with. I love the verses from both Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. Making things better is the fact that Justin Bieber knows how to sing in Spanish, too. Because of Justin Bieber, Luis Fonsi managed to get himself a huge hit in the United States and worldwide, spending 16 weeks at #1 on Billboard which ties the record with the amazing One Sweet Day. I’m sure most people will call this the most overrated song of 2017, but honestly I can’t help but enjoy this song. I’m glad Luis Fonsi managed to win me over with this single.

25. The Chainsmokers – Paris
This is the first song by The Chainsmokers in which there was no artist to collaborate with. It’s just Andrew Taggart singing the whole thing. That’s good, because he has shown that he is proven to be a great vocalist. We do, however, get un-credited vocals from Emily Warren in some parts of the song. The production throughout the song is pretty divine from start to finish. This song was another success worldwide for The Chainsmokers and once again, they continue to impress with this song.

24. Lady Gaga – The Cure
This song kinda came out of nowhere during the beginning of spring of 2017. Around the time Million Reasons started to die down, Lady Gaga decided to release this a follow-up single. To put it short, I love everything about the song. The chorus, the build-up, the production, and her vocals are all amazing. That’s all I’ve really got for this song right now. Even though it wasn’t a big hit elsewhere, it did manage to do well on Hits 1 spending a lot of time in the Top 10. Thank you, Lady Gaga for providing us this well-produced track.

23. Calvin Harris featuring Frank Ocean and Migos – Slide
Calvin Harris did have a good year in 2016 chart-wise when This Is What You Came For became a huge hit. Unfortunately, this song was not to anyone’s liking from a critical standpoint, in large part because of the mediocre drop and the repetition of the word “you” from Rihanna. Many were not expecting anymore releases from him. When it was announced that he would collaborate with Migos and Frank Ocean, many had low expectations coming into the single. After listening to the song in fall, I was actually wowed by Calvin Harris’s new sound. He went for a more groovy sound. And the vocals are actually pretty good for the most part. This song was much more likable among the blogging community and YouTube critics alike. Despite not having a good countdown run on Hits 1, it did pretty well elsewhere and thus, it managed to make the Year-End list on Billboard, which I’m pleased about. Calvin Harris managed to wow me with his new sound and I’m hoping for more of the same.

22. Ariana Grande featuring Nicki Minaj – Side To Side
I love when Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj collaborate. They can make great music together. Bang Bang was a huge favorite of mine back in 2014 and I still do love this song. Side To Side is no different. I love the reggae production all throughout the song. The verses are amazing, especially from Nicki Minaj. As always, Ariana shines bright like a diamond (not a Rihanna reference). Overall, this is my second favorite single off of Dangerous Woman and I’m happy that it got plenty of recognition, spending 3 weeks at #1 on the American Top 40. I hope they keep making music together because they make a great collaboration.

21. Alessia Cara – Scars To Your Beautiful
This song is easily my second favorite single from Alessia Cara thus far. After Wild Things unfortunately flopped, many fans and I were wondering what else did she had in store. She decided to release Scars To Your Beautiful as a follow-up…and simply put, she did not disappoint. I do love the meaning it has behind to it. Basically, she’s telling us that no matter how you look, people are still beautiful just the way they are. Basically, this is definitely a self-empowerment song that people can relate to and I’m hoping she makes more singles like this.

20. Ed Sheeran – Shape Of You
Ah yes, the big return of Ed Sheeran after about three years. This was the song that basically started his domination in the music industry throughout 2017. I like the simplicity of the song. While it may not be an out-of-this-world banger, it’s still a fantastic song by any means. I like the chorus for the most part. His vocals may not seem like much, but he did a pretty good job for the most part. I was happy to see Ed Sheeran make a comeback with this single, and it did very well considering it was #1 everywhere. It’s good to have him back and he’s better than ever.

19. Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do
You know, it’s one thing to expect a bright and bubbly pop song much like in her last album, 1989. But once people listened to this song in full, we actually got something different (not a Why Don’t We reference). This was hated by many YouTube critics, who didn’t like the darker direction that she was going and would rather listen to her older music. Honestly, I feel very alone when it comes to my opinion, but I don’t care. This song bangs. I actually love the darker and edgier direction that Taylor went for. While there’s virtually no actual singing, I do love her verses for the most part. And let’s not forget the music video, plus the cool line “I’m sorry. The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, ’cause she’s dead.”. While most loathe her new style of work, I’m not really one of them. Sorry to those that don’t like it, but that’s just how I feel. My picks, not yours.

18. Ed Sheeran – Castle On The Hill
The second of three Ed Sheeran songs on my list. This song has a lot more going on in terms of the production. The lyrical content is well written and how he delivers it made this song better. Basically, it’s like Stressed Out in a way because it talks about what going on in people’s lives. The chorus all throughout the song is amazing. While this didn’t get as big as its predecessor, it still managed to be a respectable hit worldwide. I still love this song and Ed Sheeran has proven to be one of the best songwriters around. I’m hoping we get more songs like this.

17. Taylor Swift – …Ready For It?
This song was released a week after Look What You Made Me Do. It originally served as the promo single for her album, but it was eventually made the official second single off of reputation. To put it easy, this song bangs. I find this to be even better than Look What You Made Me Do for several reasons I’m about to mention. There’s more singing going on and the production is better. Once again, Taylor Swift almost never disappoints with her vocals. The music video is pretty divine as well, but I won’t talk about that right now. What matters is that Taylor Swift manages to impress me yet again with this song, even though it still doesn’t quite live up to her previous work.

16. DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller – Wild Thoughts
While many of the rappers this year have music that is absolutely abysmal, at least DJ Khaled himself was able to come up with something different that is listenable. Wild Thoughts is definitely more superior single than its predecessor. I fell in love with this song from the start. Rihanna’s vocals are excellent in this song; she doesn’t repeat the words more than 50 times like she did with Work, or have that kinda scratchy voice like she did with Love On The BrainBryson Tiller contributed to this song very well. Their verses flow very nicely. But the best part about it is the electric guitar that comes after Rihanna finishes singing. This could’ve been a potential #1 had Despacito not come along and took over the top spot all summer long. Still, I’m glad this one managed to get some huge success because it’s one of the best things DJ Khaled has done.

15. Calvin Harris featuring Pharrell, Katy Perry, and Big Sean – Feels
Following the minor success of Slide, Calvin Harris continued to impress me with his new sound. For this one, he decided to bring along Katy Perry, and the collaboration turned out very well. It was also nice hear from Pharrell again, which we haven’t heard new music from since 2014 when Happy was one of, if not his biggest hit up-to-date. Katy Perry sounds amazing as always. The verses from Pharrell and Big Sean were pretty good too. Calvin Harris did a nice job once again by providing us his groovy new sound. It may not have been a bigger hit like I wanted to be, but it’s still a great song regardless.

14. Clean Bandit featuring Sean Paul and Anne-Marie  Rockabye
This one I’m sure all mothers can relate to. Clean Bandit did previously had Rather Be, which was a big favorite of mine back in 2014. Here they are again with my #14 song of the year, titled Rockabye. Simply put, this song is fantastic from start to end. I love the production, especially with the strings being put to great use. The verses from both Sean Paul and Anne-Marie are amazing. I also love the way Anne-Marie can hit those high notes. This was another solid hit for Clean Bandit, despite not being as big as Rather Be. I’m so happy that they managed to impress me once again.

13. Ed Sheeran – Galway Girl
Easily Ed Sheeran’s best single off of his album, Divide. Galway Girl has that folk vibe that I couldn’t resist, and the line, “She played that fiddle in an Irish band.” pulls me in. Even though the song is only less than three minutes, I still enjoyed it from start to finish. Although this song wasn’t successful elsewhere, Hits 1 did treat it better and allowed it to hit #1, because hey, it’s Ed Sheeran and they love him.

12. Bruno Mars – 24K Magic
Ah yes, Bruno Mars’s comeback single. You know, I wish people weren’t too jaded by Uptown Funk being massively overplayed. They much prefer his older singles, such as Just The Way You AreGrenade, etc. But me, Scott, and Miles beg to differ. I call this Uptown Funk 2.0. This is one of many examples of just how to make a comeback in the music industry. Sure, the lyrics may be nonsense, but Bruno Mars definitely showcases his raw vocal talent and his rapping skills are basically top-notch. If only the mainstream rappers would at least take a page from his book. So yeah, I definitely fell in love with the comeback single from Bruno Mars. Too bad many here don’t really feel the same way.

11. Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson  Symphony
Around the time Rockabye became a huge hit and was still gaining popularity, Clean Bandit released this amazing song a follow-up single. Last year, Zara Larsson gave us the incredible Never Forget You, which was among my favorite songs of 2016. I’m going to be straight up right now: this is a HUGE step up from its predecessor. While Rockabye remains a favorite of mine from this year, this song manages to impress me even more. From the very first listen, I instantly fell in love with Zara’s vocals, the production, and the lyrical content. Pretty much everything about this song is divine from start to finish. Clean Bandit did an excellent job with the production in general. It definitely has that 90’s throwback vibe to it. It’s too bad that this song failed to take off, but what matters is that I’m just happy with the way it turned out. And thank you, Zara Larsson, for impressing me!

Now, we’ve come to our Top 10. These are the songs that I’ve been enjoying pretty much all year. It’s was tough deciding to pick which ones. But eventually after careful consideration, I’ve finally made my decision. Here are the 10 songs that stood out to me in the best way possible:

10. The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk – I Feel It Coming
The Weeknd is one of those artists that hasn’t disappointed me with his music so far (with a few exceptions). I loved most of his singles, such as The Hills and Starboy. This one I’m talking about is no exception. I Feel It Coming is a big step up from its predecessor in terms of the production. I do love how he sounds like Michael Jackson, especially when I hear him all throughout the song. The coolest part, however, is the fact that we get to hear vocals from Daft Punk for the first time since Get Lucky, after we hear the second chorus. I’m glad this song took off even though it didn’t quite live up to the title track off of Starboy in terms of success. I’m hoping we can hear more from The Weeknd soon.

9. Bruno Mars – That’s What I Like
It’s too bad people were still too jaded by Uptown Funk being overplayed, hence why they didn’t like this song or its predecessor off of 24K MagicThat’s What I Like wasn’t necessarily my first choice to be his next single at the time the title track was starting to die down, but I can’t deny the fact that this is still enjoyable by any means. Once again, Bruno definitely showcases his raw vocals skills. Like most of his songs off the album, it has the throwback vibe that many music critics have come to embrace. This song managed to do well everywhere, hitting #1 on Hits 1, American Top 40, and Billboard.

8. Kendrick Lamar – HUMBLE.
This is no doubt the best lead single from his album DAMN. in my opinion. It is near-flawless. Kendrick Lamar is definitely one of the most talented hip-hop singers out there, unlike some of the other mainstream artists in that genre. If only these guys would at least take a page from his book. Anyway, those who like this one can explain it better than I can. I do think Kendrick shows personality and charisma all throughout the song, and I like his verses. He managed to win me over with this single.

7. Harry Styles – Sign Of The Times
Of all the One Direction members going solo, I think Harry Styles made easily the best first impression with his debut single. He decided to go for a more rock-type sound with 70’s-80’s throwback vibe to it. If you listened to his latest album, there’s proof that it sounds more like some of the classic rock music that critics have come to embrace. The production is solid all across the board. Harry showcases his vocal talent all throughout the song. He really shows what he’s capable of as an solo artist. His entire debut album proves it, in which he shines in some of the songs I won’t mention right now. Harry managed to impress me with his 70’s-80’s rock sound and I’m glad it received critical acclaim from many critics and bloggers alike.

6. The Chainsmokers featuring Coldplay  Something Just Like This
When Paris lost its steam elsewhere, The Chainsmokers tried to keep chugging it along with another follow-up. However, by that point, most people were sick of The Chainsmokers. But I beg to differ. Ever since they made a breakthrough with Roses, every single they released was a big hit, and I enjoyed every one of those songs. This year, they had Paris, which was pretty divine as well. However, this song wowed me the most this year. It’s basically Roses 2.0, except this time you have Chris Martin’s vocals. I like how he makes references to super-heroes, such as Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man. Back in the day, I watch superhero cartoons all the time where they fight bad guys and save the world. Every day, I would imagine wanting to be a superhero and facing danger. That was cool. It’s too bad Andrew Taggart doesn’t show up with his vocals; he instead works on the production. Despite this, the song still manages to impress me from start to finish. Words cannot describe how amazing this song is. I’m so glad that this was #1 for three weeks on Hits 1, and became Coldplay’s biggest hit thus far, even though they only needed to thank The Chainsmokers for their rising popularity.

And now I will present to you my Top 5 songs of the year. Once again, these were the songs I loved from the start and I still love them to this day. These songs wowed me from start to finish. I think these were some of the major stand-outs I made my decision. Here are my top 5 favorite songs of the year:

5. Shawn Mendes  There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back
I love when artists step up their game after they made singles which were not to many critics’ liking. That’s pretty much what happened with Shawn Mendes in 2017. Treat You Better I did like for a while, but once I paid attention to the critics’ takes on it, I realized how mediocre the song truly was. Then came Mercy, which was better written and had better production. When that song started to die down elsewhere, many were asking this question: what more did Shawn Mendes had to offer? One may answer, “not much”, because there weren’t many good single choices left off of Illuminate. However, just when virtually this song kinda came out of nowhere. At first listen, I thought it was just a pretty good song. But it grew on me more with every listen. The thing I like about this song is the fact that Shawn decided to go Latin. I’ll bet Gloria Estefan would be pleased to see him continue that path, because he definitely managed to win me over with this song. This was much more likable among YouTube critics because Shawn doesn’t come off as a whiny guy this time around and it has better lyrical content. The only other thing that made this my #5 song is the production. It drastically improved in comparison to his two predecessors I’ve already mentioned. Personally, I think this is the best single off of Illuminate. I’m glad that it was very successful worldwide and is one of Shawn’s biggest hits up-to-date.

4. Kygo featuring Selena Gomez – It Ain’t Me
Prior to this song being released, not very many people knew Kygo. He did release a few singles since entering the music business, with songs such as Carry Me and Here For You. In 2017, Kygo finally made his presence known to the music industry with It Ain’t Me. However, I think bringing in Selena Gomez was what made this song become a hit. To put it short, this song is divine! Basically, what this song talks about her relationship with a guy and that it wasn’t her. The guitars throughout the song are awesome, and Selena’s voice shines throughout. I also enjoy the build-up leading to the amazing beat drop. Kygo did a very nice job with the song overall. I highly recommend listening to his latest album, Kids In Love, if you haven’t already. These two artists definitely won me over with this single.

It all comes down to this, guys. What I am about to present to you is my Top 3 favorite songs of the year. These songs were so good that they were chosen by me to be in that region. It was a serious competition between these three songs in terms of who would be my #1 pick. After thinking for a long time, I’ve finally put together my Top 3. Here we go.

3. Katy Perry featuring Skip Marley  Chained To The Rhythm
Katy Perry has always been one of those artists that almost never disappoints me with her music. Earlier this year she released this as her comeback single, and she brought along newcomer Skip Marley. My expectations were pretty high coming into the song. And when all was said and done, I was happy with how the collaboration turned out. Simply put, this song is AMAZING! I absolutely love the production here; it’s very top-notch. And as always, Katy Perry delivers with her awesome vocals. And it’s nice that we get a contribution from Skip Marley. His verses flow pretty well, too. This is definitely one of the best comeback singles we’ve had all year and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Despite Witness not being a great album overall, this was easily the best lead single for that era. While this wasn’t the #1 song I had hoped to be, at least it managed to get a spot in the Year-End list and I’m very pleased about that.

2. Lorde – Green Light
It was four years ago that Lorde came onto the spotlight with her debut single, Royals, which was a favorite among YouTube critics, and mine as well. Since Pure Heroine, many were looking forward to hearing more of Lorde again. She did have some other singles, one of which is Yellow Flicker Beat, which was taken from The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack. The other was her collaboration with Disclosure in their single, Magnets. I loved both of these songs (and I still do). Coming into Green Light, I had high hopes that Lorde would offer something at least good to some degree. After the first listen, I’ll say that she did not disappoint. Although her vocals may not sound like much, everything else about this song is absolutely amazing from the top down bottom up. I love the lyrical content to this song. It basically talks about a heartbreak and what she has been through for the past few years. Then, we get to the production, which to me is easily the best part about this song. The piano work all throughout the song, as well as the beat and the chorus, is awesome. As soon as I finished listening to this song in full, I instantly fell in love with it. However, not many people felt the same way, hence why this song, along with the rest of her sophomore album Melodrama, didn’t really take off elsewhere, chart-wise. Still, I can’t deny the fact that Lorde crafted this masterpiece of a song, and I definitely wished it deserved better.

1. Kesha – Praying
Kesha has made easily the best comeback single we’ve heard all year. Ever since she made a breakthrough with Tik Tok back in 2009, she has continued to impress me with each release. Praying is no exception. While it may be a huge departure from her previous singles, Kesha can finally be able to show off what her voice can do. But then we get to the chorus, which is easily one of the two best things about it, along with lyrical content, which is very well written. It’s a song about Dr. Luke, whose relationship with her soured after he abused her. Almost every music critic as praised this song, and for a very good reason. This is easily the best thing she has done in her career. If you haven’t already, I highly, HIGHLY recommend checking out her latest album Rainbow because it is AMAZING!!! Simply put, the entire album is basically EVERYTHING I LOVE about Kesha. There’s plenty of good songs that are worth listening to and they have plenty of replay value. I’ll say this: Welcome back, Kesha!

And I’ve finally done it! These were my Top 50 songs of 2017, decided by me! I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read this list. You can leave a comment below about what you think of my list. It’s been an honor to share my blog with you guys in my first year and I’m hoping my journey continues! Have a good day!

New Entrants

– So, as we ring in the new year, we have new debuts to go along with it! Well, two of them to be exact. First, we’ll begin with Taylor Swift with another single off of her album, reputation. Enter End Game, which features Ed Sheeran, who has been dominant since the beginning of last year. With the debut, he now has a total of six (Yes, six!) songs on the countdown. HOWEVER…she also tags Future along, a rapper who the blogging community doesn’t seem to like. When the name came up, many here (including myself) were not expecting this to be a good song. But as it turns out, I was impressed for the most part. Future actually does sound better in this song. He finally managed to win me over with his verses. I also love Ed Sheeran’s contribution to the song as well. Once again, Taylor Swift sounds amazing. Whether this finally becomes a big hit for miss Taylor, I don’t know yet. But I’m hoping for the best because I’m in love with this song.

– For our second (and final) debut of the week to start the new year, Fall Out Boy makes their return once more. Last year, they brought us the very disappointing Young And Menance, which thankfully did not graduate from Hit-Bound. But then, they brought us Champion, which was a big step up from its predecessor and it reminded us of their classic music. Now this week, they bring us their next single from M A N I A, titled Hold Me Tight Or Don’t. Much like Young And Menance, this is another song in which they’re experimenting and trying new things. Unlike Young And Menance which had too much weird stuff going on that is not to my liking, this one has some cool stuff that doesn’t make my ears scream for mercy. The whistling in some parts of the song sounds cool. The lyrics talk about one begging for love and wanting to hold someone tight. My main concern is Patrick Stump’s vocals, in which his falsetto is a little too high. Overall, it’s a cool song with a Latin vibe that gets me going. It’ll be interesting to see how well this does on this countdown, given that the previous two representations failed to take off.

Blurb Me Tight Or Don’t

– Let’s start with our two exits this week. I’m not too surprised about Find You leaving, seeing as that one failed to take off. I do wish Nick Jonas deserved better. We also have the important exit, in which One More Light makes its departure. I would like to say thank you for your time and service on this countdown even though you weren’t really popular elsewhere. A tribute single to the late Chester Bennington, I did enjoy it from the first listen. Who knows what the future will bring for Linkin Park. Farewell, One More Light. You will be missed.

– So, Ed Sheeran is going to be in an episode of The Simpsons, huh? Well, I’ll have to catch it when it comes on. That should be interesting!

– Both Lonely Girl and Miss You are having a tough time on this countdown thus far, with both of them making drops this week. The former I don’t necessarily care for, but the latter I hoping it can rebound at some point.

– Speaking of drops, Praying sadly took a big drop after spending seemingly forever in the Top 20. Looks like the end may be near. Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted.

…Ready For It? also took a big drop as well. Not too surprising since that one has declined elsewhere. But at the same time, it’s also sad that Taylor Swift can’t seem to hit big like she once did.

River took a big jump into the Top 20 this week. Seeing as I have not shared my full opinion on the song, I might as well do it now. I do kinda like the song based on what it talks about. It’s basically another failed relationship much like in Love The Way You Lie. I do like Ed Sheeran’s verses. And even though Eminem doesn’t show too much personality like he used to, at least he has proven to be a good rapper. I’m hoping it continues to jump.

– Are you kidding me? You can’t be serious. Hits 1 NEVER lets this kind of music do well on the countdown. Rockstar made a big unnecessary jump into the Top 10 this week. Not cool at all! I swear, if it EVER hits #1, I will be PISSED.

– But also in the Top 10, we have Wolves making its arrival. I’m certainly glad this one is gaining traction elsewhere and I would like to see it in the Top 5 soon. I’ll most certainly take that (Actually any song in general, except for Meant To Be) over Rockstar any day.

– On that note, it’s also nice to see Let Me Go in the Top 5. I can see this as a potential #1 in the future if it keeps up. Also, keep in mind that Hailee Steinfeld did have a previous #1 before (Starving). I’m hoping it can happen someday.

– And then, we’ve come to our #1, in which Thunder is back on top! Hopefully, it can stay there for as long as possible. No, scratch that: I hope EVERYTHING in the Top 5 can stay there for as long as they possibly can. Please, keep Rockstar away from #1 as much as possible.

Hit-Bound:

  • Spencer – Whatever
  • AJR featuring Rivers Cuomo – Sober Up
  • Sofi Tukker – Best Friend
  • Bruno Mars featuring Cardi B. – Finesse (Remix) (DEBUT)
  • WØLVES – Animal
  • Imagine Dragons – Whatever It Takes
  • Maroon 5 – Wait (DEBUT)
  • NF – Let You Down
  • Justin Timberlake – Filthy (DEBUT)
  • Camila Cabello – Never Be The Same
  • P!NK – Beautiful Trauma
  • Clean Bandit featuring Julia Michaels – I Miss You
  • All Time Low – Last Young Renegade
  • Alan Walker featuring Noah Cyrus and Digital Farm Animals – All Falls Down
– This was an important week in terms of Hit-Bound. First, we’ll begin with Maroon 5 who have yet another single in its stead, as What Lovers Do starts to die down. Enter Wait, their next single off of their latest album, Red Pill Blues. Just when I assumed that they somewhat redeemed themselves with What Lovers Do, they kinda bring me back down with this song. It’s not really as bad as the other two big singles I won’t mention right now. But it’s pretty undesirable. The vocals are okay, but everything else is pretty forgettable. Let’s move on.

– Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours or so, you probably have heard by now that Justin Timberlake made his official return to music this past Friday. Enter Filthy, the lead single off of his upcoming album, Man Of The Woods. I’ve heard plenty of criticism about this song, and I now have a good reason as to why. There’s some weird stuff going on, mainly with the background music. Justin’s vocals don’t really sound like him, especially compared to his previous singles. I have it in blue for now, but it could change. I’ll have more words come its inevitable debut next week.

– Finally, we’ve come to the debut that is much, MUCH better than the other song I just talked about. Bruno Mars makes his return once more, and he’s bringing us some Finesse. Many fans have been pushing either this or Chunky to be the next single off of 24K Magic. Sure enough, Bruno apparently listened to the fans and gave them their wish, as he chose the former to be his next single. And guess what? He decided to remix the single by collaborating with up-and-coming female rapper Cardi B. for the fun! Now this is a lot of fun! Bruno once again delivers with his vocals, and it’s nice to see Cardi B. adding some life to the remix. I really hope it can make its debut soon, and by then I’ll talk more about it. I anticipate that day.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Fitz & The Tantrums – Handclap: It may be loud, but this is actually fun. Vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick, despite being 47 years of age, can pull off a song that brings us a ton of energy.
Lukas Graham – You’re Not There: It’s another sweet song that talks about his father not being there to celebrate his success. Too bad this didn’t get big elsewhere, not to mention it never cracked the Top 30 here.
Shawn Mendes – Mercy: Definitely a favorite of mine from last year, though I do think its successor is superior. There’s plenty to like about this song, however. The chorus is mesmerizing.

And that concludes my countdown recap. But there’s one last thing I want to mention (Well, actually; a couple of things). I will be adding two new features at the end of every countdown post. One of them is QOTW (Question Of The Week). Each week, I’ll ask you guys a question related to music and you can leave a comment below. The second feature I’ll be adding is Guess The Song.  Basically, I’ll give you some hints on the song that you’ll have to guess. Again, leave a comment below for your answer.

QOTW: What are your thoughts on Justin Timberlake’s new single, Filthy? Also, how do you think it will fare in terms of chart success?

Guess The Song:
– I was green on Adrian’s blog when it made its debut, but then he put me in red.

– I debuted and left on an one-exit week.

– I left on the same week that Work From Home left the American Top 40.

AT40: Camila Cabello (2) – Week Of January 6, 2018

Hello, fam! Happy New Year to you all! This is the first AT40 Countdown of 2018! New Entrants

– To kick off this week new entrants of the new year, we have newcomer band BTS making their first appearance on the AT40 with their single titled Mic Drop, which features Desiigner. If you don’t know who Desiigner is, I’ll refresh your mind for a second. He’s the one who is known for singing Panda, which was one of my worst songs of 2016. As for this collaboration, I can’t say I’m a fan either. It has the annoying background loop, which reminds me of Mi Gente. And I don’t like the verses at all. They’re kinda messy for the most part. I don’t have much else to say about this song right now, but simply put, this song sucks. I’m hoping it dies out fast.

– Next, we have Cheat Codes with their second song on the countdown. With No Promises continuing to die out, they’re now following up Feels Great, which features Fetty Wap. Now this one I can listen to as opposed to MIC Drop, which is horrible on all fronts. Feels Great, however, is a different story. I do like the production for the most part, and Fetty Wap actually sounds great here. Cheat Codes have proven to be solid DJ’s with their latest releases. Let’s hope it does well like No Promises did.

– Third, we have another collaboration. Who would’ve guessed that G-Eazy and Halsey, despite being a couple, decide to make a song together? Anyway, they bring us Him & I. I’m not quite feeling this one. I do like Halsey’s vocals somewhat and the production is okay. But the rest of the song just feels a little underwhelming to me. And both artists show very little personality. My opinion could change.

– Finally, we have the best debut of the week, and it comes from Walk The Moon. For those who don’t know these guys, let’s rewind for a minute. The year was 2015, and Shut Up And Dance had just crossed over to mainstream. Soon enough, it started to blow up everywhere on the charts, reaching #1 for 12 Weeks on Hits 1 and. After the song died out, many were awaiting for what was to come next. Fast forward to 2018, and here they are making their return with One Foot, the lead single off of their latest album, What If Nothing. The production here is top-notch, and their vocals are spot on. I like how they’re singing with a lot of charisma and energy. This is the kind of song we need right now. Whether or not this song will have the same success as its predecessor, only time will tell on that. Overall, I’m enjoying this song and I wish it the best of luck on many charts.

Half Of My Blurbs Are In Havana, Ooh-Na-Na

– Let’s begin with our exits. First off, I didn’t really care for Silence in the long run. However, if I’m being honest, I wasn’t expecting it to leave us so soon. I thought it was going to stay for a little longer. On a positive note, let us celebrate as Do Re Mi has finally left the countdown! It’s about damn time! That leaves us with two songs. Dusk Till Dawn took a rather unexpected exit. It’s very saddening that this song never caught on with the public. I was hoping it would be a respectable hit at least, but it just didn’t happen. Oh well, it was nice having it around for a while. Finally, we have the important exit. Despacito, one of the biggest songs of 2017 and the 16-time #1 song on Billboard which ties the record of One Sweet Day, is officially no more. It’s not really surprising that it got big because of the remix with Justin Bieber. I do still enjoy it and while many are throwing a be-gone party, I’m not one of them. Farewell, Despacito. You served us well despite being overrated by many. You will be missed.

– We have some saddening drops this week. One in particular is the big drop from What About Us by P!NK. I’m hoping it can hang around for a little longer.

– We also have the big drop from Praying by Kesha, which is very disappointing, but at the same time it’s not surprising, given that this song has pretty much died out elsewhere.

– But in return, there’s the massive jump from End Game. Hopefully, this is a sign that Taylor Swift can gain some steam with this song. Since this song also features Ed Sheeran, that should be much of a problem.

– Speaking of Ed Sheeran, we have Perfect entering the Top 5. I’m hoping it can be #1 in the near future. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem, because that one is still somewhat gaining in sales right now, thanks to two different remixes (one with Beyoncé and the other being the Andrew Weatherall remix).

– And of course, Havana holds the top spot, which is not surprising considering that it’s still one of the biggest songs in North America right now. It’s good to see Camila still on top.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
I Don’t Wanna Live Forever by ZAYN featuring Taylor Swift: Two of the biggest names in music collaborating with each other. While it doesn’t live up to Love Me Like You Do, I do kinda like what this one has to offer, mainly Taylor Swift in general.
You’re Not There by Lukas Graham: While it doesn’t quite live up to 7 Years, I do like how it tells a story about his father not being there to celebrate his success. It’s a sweet song for what it is.
Kids by OneRepublic: I like this one more than I should. The production here is amazing, and the vocals are top-notch. Too bad this only spent one week on the AT40.
Guys My Age by Hey Violet: Adrian can explain this one better than I could. Everything he said about this song is spot on the money. When a song talks about girls claiming that guys are too immature for your age when it’s actually false, it’s the first sign that this wasn’t a good song to start.
I Feel It Coming by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk: Easily my second-favorite single from The Weeknd, only behind The Hills. And it was nice to hear Daft Punk‘s vocals.
