Charlie Puth (2) – Week Of February 17, 2018

Hello, fam! So, Valentine’s Day has come and gone. I am unfortunately still single. I know, sad. Anyway, I do plan on going to see the movie, Black Panther this weekend. I heard it’s really good. If you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend you check it out. New Entrants

– Hits 1 is best known for picking up songs from unknown artists that you don’t really here elsewhere. Most of their respective songs that end up debuting on the countdown are pretty good for the most part. But then there are some artists who are not very good. One such example is AJR, who have proven to me time and time again that their music is shit. Now, let me ask you this question. Are you tired of Hits 1 picking up music from AJR? If the answer is yes, then I’ve got some bad news for you (and myself as well). They’ve returned with their latest single from The Click, titled Sober Up. Every year since they made their first appearance with I’m Ready back in 2014, Hits 1 picks up at least one single from these guys. And other than a couple of songs that I won’t mention were kinda guilty pleasures of mine, almost all of their music sucks. It was around this time last year that they brought us Weak, and let me be honest here: I actually cannot believe I liked that song at first. I should’ve listened to all the horrible things many in the blogging community were saying about AJR. At the time I fell in love with Weak last year, I didn’t even care. But it wasn’t long until I really started to pay close attention to the song in general and after a while, I found it to be annoying. No, it’s not like I got sick of that song very quickly. I fully realized that the song was garbage and I was not looking forward to what they had to offer. But I’ve basically said enough. Let’s review their latest single, Sober Up. The entire song has some of the worst lyrics I’ve heard. And no, I’m not falling for some of the cool lines this time around. Their songwriting is just plain bad, and it shows. But that’s not even the biggest problem I have with this song. Their vocals are obnoxious, especially in the chorus. If there’s another reason why they’re hated by many in the blogging community, look no further than this song. It wasn’t until recently that I watched Spectrum Pulse’s take on not just this song, but their entire album as a whole. He SLAMMED the album BIG TIME, and for a very good reason. Almost all of the songs from the album are shit, including this one. Hopefully, it doesn’t stay for a very long time like Weak did.

– We have two more debuts on this week’s edition of the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown, and they’re MUCH better than the one I just finished talking about. Two years ago, in February 2016, Troye Sivan made his first-ever appearance on the countdown with his single Youth, which despite not doing well elsewhere, did better on Hits 1 peaking at #4. This song was a favorite in the blogging community. I myself did enjoy it for a while, and while it was a good song, it didn’t quite stick with me like I wanted to. Not long after that, he had another single, which was Wild, but that one unfortunately failed to graduate Hit-Bound. Since then, some were anticipating his return. And this year, their wish was granted. At #35, he makes his return with his new song titled My My My!, which is the lead single off of his upcoming album. Troye has a great voice, and he’s taking full advantage of it in this song. It sounds like he’s has more energy and charisma. I love it when artists try to use their talent to its fullest potential. There’s more going on in terms of the production, mainly because it has more groove. The songwriting is fantastic. I recently watched the music video, and my goodness! He has great dance skills! Simply put, I love pretty much everything about this song. I hope it has the same success as Youth.

– There have been many artists who make a big comeback with their respective new singles after a while only for their songs to flop big time, whether it’s because their song is too polarizing or just simply underrated. One such example was Taylor Swift, who’s recent single was met with negative reception and thus, it ended up flopping hard elsewhere. The same thing happened with Justin Timberlake when he made a comeback with Filthy in the wake of his upcoming Super Bowl performance, but was met with mixed reviews and as a result, it ended up being a huge flop. Now, he replaces himself this week by bringing in a new song that is much more likable, and he also bought along country star Chris Stapleton for the ride. Enter Say Something, his next single off of his latest album Man Of The Woods. Unlike its predecessor where it had some weird stuff going on, this song doesn’t have any of that. It has more singing going on. Justin pretty much shows off his vocals throughout the song, unlike in his predecessor where he raps in some parts. I love the chorus. Chris Stapleton makes a very good contribution. The use of guitars are amazing. It definitely sounds like true country music if some artists actually cared. Overall, it’s a very enjoyable song. I’m hoping it becomes a big hit.

One Sweet Blurb

– So, this was an important week in terms of our exits. First off, Hot Damn makes its departure. It was a cool song, though I wasn’t surprised to see that one leave given that it’s not popular elsewhere. Then there’s two other exits. I just talked about Filthy being a flop, seeing as people aren’t buying into Justin Timberlake’s new sound. While I had mixed thoughts on that one, I guess you could say it was a guilty pleasure of mine. Finally, there’s Attention, and its departure unfortunately means that Charlie Puth won’t be bookending the countdown for the second week in a row. I do still enjoy it somewhat, so I’ll kinda miss it.

– Before introducing Sorry Not Sorry, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Demi Lovato has been writing songs for John Meyer. I mean, really? Does he have some sort of influence or what?

– This is the first time that There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back is not in the Top 30 since I don’t know how long it’s been? Looks like the end may finally be near for this song.

– Before introducing Rockstar, Spyder Harrison mentioned that Post Malone was playing a game one day and won a guitar? What? Did he really win it?! I guess now he’s a bigger superstar, heh.

– Wow. Three songs had the Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week this week. Not only that, but they dropped five, yes FIVE spots. If I’m correct, this is probably the first time such an occurrence has ever happened.

– I’m not thrilled about the big jump from Let You Down into the Top 10, though I guess I see the appeal. But I’m just not feeling this song. I guess it could be worse.

– Nothing really has changed in the Top 5 other than some songs moving spots. This is the second time this year in which the #1 held its spot. Bad At Love is looking to take back that spot as it rose back up to #2, despite that it’s losing its steam elsewhere.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Maroon 5 featuring Future – Cold: This song is another example of how Maroon 5 lost their groove they once had. But if it’s anything, I’ll take this over its predecessor any day.
Katy Perry featuring Skip Marley – Chained To The Rhythm: An awesome comeback for Katy Perry after three years. I talked about this in full when I reviewed My Top 50 Songs Of 2017. But yeah, everything about this song is divine. Too bad the public doesn’t feel the same way, what with it spending only one week in the Top 5 on Billboard.

QOTW: What is your favorite song of all time? Also, your least favorite song? And why?

  1. I'm also going to see Black Panther and I might review the album too, since it is really good.QOTW: Well… for best of all time this will be weird… it's See You Again. First, I will say that I really wasn't into music until the 2010's. I actually started in 2015, and then I listened to older songs of the decade. So, back to See You Again. This song gets me emotional all the time and I am a big Fast And Furious fan. This is the only time that Charlie Puth has done something amazing in a song, and Wiz seems to be quiet in 2017/2018 which is really sad cause he is one of my favorite rappers of all time. HOWEVER, some close seconds are Closer, Summer, Paradise, and I Need Your LoveFor least I really can't say anything, since the songs that I don't like I usually forget. The worst I can think of is… Issues…

  2. Best: Ariana Grande/Zedd – Break Free because it has an awesome EDM beat and Ariana can hit the high notes.Worst: Nicki Minaj – Anaconda because it’s not a kids appropriate song and I don’t like it when she says “oh my god, look at her butt” making it worse.

  3. I've heard better EDM songs from Zedd and other EDM artists, this isn't even in the top 5, or even top 10.Not every song needs to be made for a fucking Kidz Bop album for God's sake. Also, the song was basically a sample of Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back, with that line and the beat included.

  4. Question of the Week.Best: Not sure at this point. But it's either Shake it Off, Timber, or a random non-hit from 2014 or 2015.Worst: The most boring of them all is All of Me, for now. Some dishonorable mentions include: Say You Won't Let Go, Perfect (Sheeran), Let Her Go, and the non-boring Gummo, which is likely my (and many others') least favorite song of 2018 so far.

  5. Favorite: Thriller by Michael Jackson. That song and its titular parent album have left a legacy on music that is almost unparalleled.Least favorite: Gummo by 6ix9ine. It's outright unlistenable and comes from a white rapper who spams the N-word. It just blows on every level you can think of. FUCK THIS SONG.

  6. Favorite: Love The Way You Lie by Eminem featuring Rihanna just because it's one of those songs that really stood out to me growing up. The production is amazing, almost magical in a way. Eminem was my favorite rapper at the time and I really like his verses. Rihanna sounds amazing in the chorus and I think she was a fantastic choice. They're one of those duos that I think work really well, especially since they were two of my favorite artists at the time.Least Favorite: I've heard a lot of awful rap music in the past, but they're so forgettable that I'm not even going to bother choosing them. This may not be my all-time least favorite, but it's definitely one of my least favorites, and it's Friday by Rebecca Black. Again, there's probably worse that I can't think off the top of my head, but this one was pretty bad. Her voice sucks and not even autotune could help it. It makes the song incredibly annoying. The songwriting and instrumentation are not good. I believe it's the most disliked video on YouTube, and I totally see why. So yeah, I genuinely hate this.

  7. So, even though I absolutely hate Gummo as well, I'm quite shocked by your response. I'm guessing your least favorite song of 2018 is basically a foregone conclusion? And yes, Thriller is a masterpiece. No doubt about that.

  8. I was just about to ask that, because if I recall correctly, he loathed that song BIG TIME back in 2014. I don't think he ever liked anything by Meghan Trainor (Other than maybe at least one song? I don't know).

  9. For the QOTW, 1 song for each is boring. Why not a top 5?Top 5:1. Lose Yourself – It's Lose Yourself. Need I say more?2. In The End – Rock and rap mixed in the right way. RIP Chester.3. Mo Money Mo Problems – Biggie Smalls's best song. The chorus is awesome and the other 2 rappers also contribute.4. Yeah – If you always hear this song at a party or sports game, what reason is there to not like it? Exactly, there's not one.5. Gangsta's Paradise – Old school rap at its finest. Well, second-finest, if you count MMMP.Bottom 5 (In no specific order, because you can't rank trash):Gummo – Scott said it better. If you're looking for pure ear torture, this is the way to go.Roll In Peace – No bottom songs list is complete without Kodak Black. This is his worst song because everything just sucks, AND we added Xxxtentacleporn in the mix.Gucci Gang – I mean, it's Gucci Gang. I haven't met many non-stupid people who like this.Freaky Gurl (Gucci Mane) – If Gucci Mane is whining worse than Kodak Black here, that says something. If I had to pick the worst song out of this list, I'd pick this.Laffy Taffy – Look no further than the title. And yay, River was one of the biggest drops! Isn't that just so PLEASING to see? (Sarcasm alert)

  10. I'll admit that maybe declaring that about Gummo might be exaggerating a little bit, I'm sure I could think of a song I hate more objectively, but the fact that America let it pass just aggravates me and makes it an easy one to mention. It's painful to listen to, which doesn't help. And in the post above that I deleted, I also mentioned Look At Me by XXXTentacion tying it, if only for how much its defenders pissed me off back when it was right on the edge of making the Year-End list. I hate them both (Look At Me and Gummo) equally, you can say they both tie for my most hated, but the only reason I deleted that post and didn't mention it is because of how Parker's opinion on it made a complete 180.I would mention Fack just like Miles did, which I would consider worse than either of them, but that song was never a real hit and thus we never had to care about it, which is why I didn't mention it.

  11. Okay, I'll just post my favorite and least favorite then, since I haven't given out my own response.Least favorite: Hmmm…not sure about that one. I'll just go with Who Let The Dogs Out?, mainly because its nonsensical in every sense of the word. You can't even call it a song.Favorite song: Well, there's a lot of songs that come to mind. So, I'm going with two songs instead of just one. One in particular is I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston because it's a defining song for her. I absolutely love her voice and the lyrical content is fantastic. This was also released in 1992, the year of my birth.Another song I would choose is My Heart Will Go On by Céline Dion. I have always loved Céline Dion ever since I was a child. Her voice is AMAZING! This is her best song ever. I love the melody, the production, her vocals, the lyrical content, etc. Pretty much everything about it is fantastic. And let's not forget the amazing key change. Definitely my favorite song from her and possibly my favorite of all time.

  12. I do hate All About That Bass, but not enough for it to be my least favorite. There are quite a few songs I hate more than that one.And yeah, Meghan Trainor has not impressed me at all. Lips Are Movin' was okay and Me Too was a guilty pleasure of mine, but everything else she has released is shit.

  13. Nice picks. I definitely agree with My Heart Will Go On. I've never talked about this one, but I do love it. I agree that everything about it is fantastic. Her vocals are phenomenal and that last chorus is absolutely divine and one of the best things I've ever heard.

  14. \”because of how Parker's opinion on it made a complete 180\”Nah, I always hated Gummo. I still remember first hearing it in November and hearing this white dude screaming whatever he was screaming with the N-word in it and I was like, \”TURN THIS OFF!\”Also, I agree with you on Fack, except for the part that it's worse than those 2.

  15. I'm sure many critics will say the same about Meghan Trainor, because from what I saw, they're not very kind to her music either. As for me, well let me just say that I have mixed feelings about her. But there are a few other songs I can think of that are far worse than her music. Even Me Too isn't that bad for me. In fact, I'd MUCH rather listen to that then some other worse songs I won't mention, so that's saying a lot.

  16. Parker: The song I meant that you \”made a 180 on\” was Look At Me, not Gummo. I mentioned that song in the post I deleted, but that was the reason I erased that post because I didn't want it to look like a witch hunt.Miles: Guess I don't know my knowledge of Latinos. =\\

  17. Most Favorite: Boulevard Of Broken Dreams by Green Day. One of the best rock songs ever and rightfully so.Least Favorite: Low by Flo Rida featuring some other people. I can't stand this song. It is so annoying. The lyrical content is outright stupid and fucking wrong. I will note that I seriously considered How Long for this.
