Hello, fam! We made it through another year as far as Hits 1 goes, and with that comes the Top 45 songs of 2018! Now, I want to remind everyone that I’ll be hosting a rankdown of this countdown. You will have to submit your rankings based on your opinions. Submissions are due on January 12, but I’ll be willing to extend the deadline if I have to. More details, as well as instructions on how the game works, are on this page. Right now, I’m going to be reviewing Hits 1’s Top 45 of 2018!
Every year, Hits 1 counts down the biggest songs of the year similar to what they do on the Weekend Countdown, which I review on a weekly basis. The results were based on the Wutchuwant Crew. So, what I will do is I’m going to be reviewing every song in detail and I’ll share my thoughts on them. Again, keep in mind that the number in parentheses is where each song peaked during its tenure on the Weekend Countdown. With that, here is the color code that I’ll use and the number of points each song will get:
- Red – Horrid (0 Points)
- Turquoise – Bad (1 Point)
- Yellow – Mediocre (2 Points)
- Pink – Decent (3 Points)
- Blue – Good (4 Points)
- Green – Great (5 Points)
And there you are. Those are the six ranks that I’ll be using. Orange and purple will remain as the worst and best songs, respectively. But there’s one new addition: should the best song of the year appear on this list, it will be given a score of 6 instead of 5. Basically, it’ll just be given bonus points. After I finish reviewing all the songs, I’ll be doing a Top 45 Breakdown. It’s similar to the Top 20 Review which I do on a weekly basis when reviewing the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. The only difference is because this is a Year-End post, all 45 songs will be grade. And the maximum score will come out as 225, which is the denominator. The numerator is what my final score will be, and all of this will be converted to 100 when I’m done with my calculations. If you have any questions, you can comment below. Alright, I’ve explained just about everything on how the whole thing works. Thus, I am ready to begin.
But first, we’re going to go back in time and look back on last year’s Top 45. Now with this being a Year-End review, the color code here differs from what I use in my weekend countdown posts. You can check the sidebar if needed. Now with that being said, here is last year’s Top 45.

2. Zedd featuring Alessia Cara – Stay (#1, 4 Weeks)
1. Ed Sheeran – Shape Of You (#1, 9 Weeks)
Looking back at 2017, I’ll say it was a lot better than what I give credit for. A lot of these songs from that year somehow managed to stick with me in the long run. Though we did have some mediocrity, so not everything was perfect. So with that out of the way, I am ready to get this started. I will now get on with Hits 1’s Top 45 Of 2018! Are you guys, ready? Let’s go!
45. Demi Lovato – Tell Me You Love Me (#5) [5; Great]
It’s been quite a year for Demi Lovato, especially with what she is going through at this moment with her recent health scare. My heart still goes out to her as she recovers. Demi is a talented individual and I enjoyed songs such as Give Your Heart A Break, Cool For The Summer, and Heart Attack. Tell Me You Love Me was an interesting album to say the least. Sorry Not Sorry wasn’t particularly a stand-out, but I did find it to be enjoyable. The title track, on the other hand, is on another level. I love the use of the trumpets. Demi sounds amazing with her vocals and it shows why I like her as an artist. The lyrics are well-written. It had a spot in My Top 50 Songs Of 2018, where I ranked it at #25, and for a very good reason. This song is special and definitely her best from the album. I do hope we get to hear more from Demi soon when she recovers.
44. Halsey featuring Big Sean and Stefflon Don – Alone (#11) [4; Good]
I remember listening to the song for the first time and I was genuinely impressed, however I’d prefer her other single from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, Strangers, which was the best song off of the album. But I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Anyway, after Bad At Love’s momentum completed stalled out, it was only a matter of time that Halsey would end up releasing something new at that time. Sure enough, this song became the next single off of her album. But what ultimately happened was she decided to release the remix that features Big Sean and Stefflon Don. On its own, I thought the song was decent enough. But the remix does add some life to it. I like the verses from those guys. The production is pretty solid and Halsey shines with her vocals. Although it doesn’t quite live up to some of her singles from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, it’s still rather enjoyable. I love Halsey as an artist and she showed me that she has a nice voice when she uses it well.
43. MAX featuring Gnash – Lights Down Low (#6) [1; Bad]
I know this is going to be a very unpopular opinion among some here in the blogging community. But I’m going to be straight up and say that I’m not very fond of the song. I remember first listening to this on Hit-Bound back in early 2017 and I didn’t think it was all that good. MAX sounds pretty underwhelming in the song. The chorus isn’t all that amazing and I’m not big on the production. Plus, Gnash doesn’t add much to it. And then there’s the lyrics. Something about the line, “I promise you that no one else will ever treat you better,” kinda turns me off and it reminded me of a certain song that I won’t talk about. Overall, I’m a not a fan of this.
42. Kelly Clarkson – Love So Soft (#5) [3; Decent]
The year was 2002. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, no. I’m not talking about the song from Anne-Marie. I’m talking about the year itself. That was when Kelly Clarkson won on American Idol. She has become a huge favorite of mine since then. Almost every single she has released has impressed me. I did a post where I counted down my Top 10 favorite songs from her. You can check it out if you haven’t already. My expectations were pretty high coming into Love So Soft, and I initially fell in love with it. However, with time I realized the song wasn’t all that amazing. Now I do like how Kelly tries to experiment her new sound, which is a mix of Soul and R&B. I do question some of the lyrics, however. The line, “Love so soft, you ain’t had nothing softer,” isn’t exactly the best expression. Kelly Clarkson has done better, though it’s most definitely not a bad song. But this is probably one of her weakest singles to date.
41. Dua Lipa – New Rules (#11) [5; Great]
I didn’t envision this making the Year-End list on Hits 1, especially considering it didn’t last very long, as opposed to the American Top 40 where it lasted a year there and thus would go on to be the #1 song of the year for that countdown. But I’m glad it did. I discussed this song in full detail in my Top 50 Songs Of 2018, where I placed it in My Top 10. It’s cool and different. Dua has a unique voice and she uses it well in the song. The tropical house vibe is just awesome. The music video stands out in every way possible. It showed me what the song is truly about: her friends blocking her from getting back together with her ex-boyfriend. Yeah, this song is special and I’m glad it got all the success it deserved.
40. The Chainsmokers featuring Emily Warren – Side Effects (#6) [5; Great]
Before this song came along, I had been pretty mixed with The Chainsmokers’s latest music. Their singles such as Everybody Hates Me and Somebody weren’t any good. I did like Sick Boy at first, but I realized how annoying it was and it ultimately faded on me big time. From there, I started to question the direction they were going on. But out of nowhere, they released Side Effects, which is a step back in the right path. Here we get vocals from Emily Warren, who actually has been writing songs for these guys since they’ve became popular back in 2016. She sounds great throughout the song. Both Andrew and Alex put forth the effort in the production, which showed that they haven’t lost their touch. This did pretty well on Hits 1 despite the same not ringing true elsewhere. As much as I like this one, I’d much rather hear its successor This Feeling, which is doing extremely well and has just spent some time at #1, which is pleasing.
39. Portugal. The Man – Feel It Still (#5) [3; Decent]
I always like when indie artists and/or bands get big hits. Before this song came along, I never really heard of Portugal. The Man. Although they started making music since the last decade, little was known about them. Then came Feel It Still, which was a sleeper hit in the fall of 2017. My relationship with the song is rather interesting. I didn’t exactly cared for it from the start, but I did come around to it. Now, after hearing its successor Live In The Moment, it kinda made me lose interest in the song again. But I do like some elements of the song. The production here is pretty neat and I like the instrumentation. But I find their vocals to be a little underwhelming and they don’t shine in the chorus. I do still kinda like this, but it pales in comparison to its successor, which is much better. I’m thankful that this song helped put them on the map, though. I’m interested to see what they have next.
38. Bebe Rexha – I’m A Mess (#3) [0; Horrid]
It’s one thing to legitimately dislike a song. There have been plenty of putrid songs this year I was never fond of from the very start. But it’s another thing to love it at first, only to find out later on that there was never anything good about it. I’m A Mess is one of many great examples, mind you, of this. It perfectly fits into the category of songs I liked at first, but gets annoying after a while. How did it get up to that point, you might ask? Well, it all started when Bebe Rexha released her latest album titled Expectations, which included songs such as this and Meant To Be. I’ve made it no secret that I legitimately dislike Meant To Be, but we’ll get more into that song later on. I was expecting Bebe to come up with something better. When I first heard I’m A Mess, I thought that way initially. But after a while, things would drastically take a turn for the worse. Honestly, I’m not sure what I was thinking when I loved it, because hearing it over and over again, it’s even worse than I thought. Here, Bebe sounds like nails on a chalkboard. Her verses have no momentum of any kind whatsoever and in the chorus, she is DRENCHED in auto-tune. Not helping is the production, which has the scratchy guitar and the poor use of instruments. Simply put, this song is shit. As much as I loathe Meant To Be, I’d rather hear that than this poor excuse of a song, which is indeed a mess, literally.
37. Dua Lipa – IDGAF (#9) [5; Great]
Following the success of New Rules, Dua Lipa has become a mainstay in the music world throughout 2018. So, it was only natural that she would follow-up her success by releasing more singles. From her self-titled album, she gave us IDGAF, which isn’t a reflection of how I feel about the song as you can see. Sure, it’s not quite as good as New Rules. There’s not much to the production besides the guitar. But everything else about the song is spot on. The lyrics tell us about her trying to cut someone off her life and saying she doesn’t care about that particular person anymore. I do like her creativity when it comes to her songwriting. Dua does showcase her vocal talent throughout the song. I like the chorus and her verses. I did place this at #24 in My Top 50 Songs of 2018, and for good reason. This is one of her best songs from a vocal standpoint. I’m excited to see what else Dua Lipa has in store in the near future.
36. Foster The People – Sit Next To Me (#6) [4; Good]
I remember listening to Pumped Up Kicks back in 2011 and thinking it was cool and something different. I enjoyed that song overall. It was nice to see Foster The People make their comeback this year with Sit Next To Me. I was juggling between putting this in the great or good tier. And in the end, I ultimately chose the latter. Sure, I do like the production and their vocals are nice. But with time, it didn’t quite stuck with me in the long run as much as I wanted it to. Personally, I think these guys are very talented overall and like I said, they do have some cool music. Sit Next To Me was something I did enjoy when it was new. It was pretty successful on Hits 1, what with barely missing out on the Top 5, so that’s nice.
35. Charlie Puth featuring Kehlani – Done For Me (#7) [5; Great]
As I’ve mentioned several times, Charlie Puth has definitely improved from Nine Track Mind when he released Attention. It showed how he was able to evolve. He made it clear in Done For Me, which features Kehlani. She did have a song on the countdown back in 2017 with G-Eazy in Good Life. But sadly, that one only lasted one week. But here she is sitting at #35 with Charlie in Done For Me. Charlie worked his magic with the production. I also like his voice. It sounds smooth and it fits well for a track that has some groove to it. Kehlani’s verses are awesome. She showed me once again that she has a good voice like she did in Good Life. It’s a continuation of the story that takes place after How Long, and I like how Charlie can be creative and craft up good lyrics. Overall, this is my second-favorite song off of Voicenotes and I’m glad it was released as a single. They both impressed me here.
34. Marshmello featuring Bastille – Happier (#1, 2 Weeks) [2; Mediocre]
I know there are some people here who love this song, mainly because it does have a meaning, and I do respect their opinion. But for me, I feel like it just shows how that Marshmello has been going downhill since the release of Friends, which I absolutely detest. We’ll talk more about Friends later on. Anyway, I did question the song from the beginning. However, I do think that one redeeming quality is the lyrical content itself. It’s much better written than that of its predecessor and like I just mentioned it does have a meaning. My problem is that the production is too generic especially for a EDM artist like Marshmello, and this is coming from someone who ranked Wolves as my #2 favorite song of 2018. Sure, the piano is nice. But outside of that, the rest of the production is not to my liking. I had decent expectations for Dan Smith of Bastille, in part because they had some great singles like Pompeii. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite live up to his expectations vocally. So yeah, I’m not a big fan of the song overall. But if it’s anything, I’d much rather hear this than its predecessor. Now that’s saying a lot.
33. G-Eazy featuring Halsey – Him & I (#3) [3; Decent]
Both G-Eazy and Halsey have had some pretty interesting music in the past. I had no idea what to expect when they decided to collaborate with each other, especially since they were still a couple around that time. But after a few listens, I grew to love the song big time. I had originally thought about including Him & I in My Top 50 Songs Of 2018. But following the break-up between G-Eazy and Halsey, it had lost its meaning and I kinda faded on me. However, I still think the collaboration turned out okay. Halsey sounds good throughout the song, and I do like the verses we get from G-Eazy. He showed me that he is a solid rapper for the most part. So yeah, I still kinda like the song. But it just didn’t stick with me in the long run.
32. The Weeknd featuring Kendrick Lamar – Pray For Me (#5) [5; Great]
Following the success of Beauty Behind The Madness, The Weeknd had become a mainstay in the world of music. He did follow-up with Starboy, which includes the title track and I Feel It Coming, both of which were my favorites. Then, there’s Kendrick Lamar who’s been impressing me as a rapper overall. DAMN. was a solid album overall. As you may recall, I included both I Feel It Coming and HUMBLE. in My Top 10 Songs of 2017. When the collaboration was first announced, I had high expectations. Sure enough, it worked out well. The Weeknd sounds great with his vocals. He shows that he’s a good singer overall. I like the verses we get from Kendrick Lamar, and it show how great he is as a rapper. Production-wise, it’s similar to Starboy. This was taken from the Black Panther movie soundtrack. And I would like to thank the late Stan Lee for making this movie possible. I loved his creation and I grew up watching superheroes like Spider-Man, The Avengers, etc. He was definitely a comic book legend and he’ll be truly missed.
31. Imagine Dragons – Natural (#1, 1 Week) [5; Great]
After Whatever It Takes became a success, Imagine Dragons decided to release a brand new single out of nowhere. It was actually the lead single from Origins as they decided not to release anymore songs from Evolve. It reminds me of Believer from a vocal standpoint. I love how Dan Reynolds is able to hit those high notes. Personally, I think he is doing this to show how far his voice can go. I like when artists put their limits to the test, and Dan shows that in Natural. The production is pretty solid all around. If you’ve been watching college football all year long (like I do actually, because I’m a big fan of football), then you probably have seen it on TV commercials quite a few times. Anyway, I love the song overall. It was pretty successful worldwide, and of course it was able to hit #1 on the Weekend Countdown, which was nice. Natural is one of the few stand-outs from Origins and I still enjoy it.
30. Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B – Girls Like You (#4) [3; Decent]
This song didn’t have a good relationship with me at first, in part because Maroon 5 hasn’t really impressed me with their latest singles (other than What Lovers Do). But overtime, I did start to come around to it. Make no mistake: this is nowhere near their best work. It does, however, show that the band isn’t always about Adam Levine, especially when I look at the production of the song. The guitars sound okay, so that’s saying something. Adam’s vocals are pretty decent. I’m quite surprised that Hits 1 didn’t edit out Cardi B’s verse, which I found to be good. I’m even more surprised that this wasn’t a #1 hit despite it having more success elsewhere, but maybe I should’ve been. The presence of Cardi B cancels that out given that Hits 1 does things differently. The music video was pretty interesting, because it featured many female celebrities like Camila Cabello, Jennifer Lopez, and Ellen DeGeneres. So it wasn’t a surprise to see it become a huge hit following the release of the music video. Yeah, I can safely say it’s not a bad song and it’s something worth while.
29. Backstreet Boys – Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (#3) [5; Great]
I’ve been a big fan of the Backstreet Boys back when I was a child. I grew up with songs such as I Want It That Way and Larger Than Life. They were both amazing. When they made their comeback with Don’t Go Breaking My Heart this year, I was genuinely impressed. To say the least, I love everything about the song. When the song opens up with the piano, I get excited because that’s when I start to hear the Backstreet Boys. I love their vocals. They showed me that they haven’t lost a step. The production is just awesome on all levels. It’s too bad the song wasn’t much of a success elsewhere. But Hits 1 did treat it well by allowing it to peak in the Top 5. They do have a new album coming soon, and I’m certainly looking forward to that.
28. Selena Gomez featuring Marshmello – Wolves (#3) [5; Great]
Ever since the release of Revival, which wasn’t really that good of an album in my eyes, I’ve had mixed feelings about Selena Gomez’s music. I did like songs such as Good For You, Same Old Love, and Me And The Rhythm, the very latter being the best. But it wasn’t until she released songs like Hands To Myself, Bad Liar, and Fetish, which really made me question as to what direction she is taking. She did a collaboration with Kygo in It Ain’t Me, which I ranked as my #4 favorite song of 2017. But that was really the only bright spot at that moment. My expectations were pretty low coming into Wolves. She decided to collaborate with up-and-coming EDM artist Marshmello for this song, and the results were just awesome. I discussed the song in greater depth when I counted down My Top 50 Songs of 2018, where I ranked it as my #2 favorite song of the year. Feel free to check it out if you haven’t already. This song is just magical. Like, I’m not even kidding. I’m going to emphasize this once again: EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SONG IS SUPER MAGICAL! Marshmello definitely shows how talented he is as a producer, especially when it comes to the production. He really worked his magic here. Selena shines throughout the entire song. She put together probably her best vocal performance since before Revival, which like I just mentioned wasn’t good. The amazing drop, combined with her background vocals really got me here. I also love the creativity put together when it comes to the lyrics. This is far and away the best thing Marshmello has done and one of the best things Selena has been a part of. It definitely deserved to be #1 at some point in the countdown, but #3 is still very nice.
27. Macklemore featuring Kesha – Good Old Days (#1, 1 Week) [5; Great]
Both Macklemore and Kesha have had good music of their own. Of course, you’ve all seen me rank Praying as my #1 song of 2017. Not only that, but her singles prior to that were all amazing and thus, Kesha became a favorite of mine. Macklemore is also pretty good as well, both as a singer and a rapper. He did work with Ryan Lewis in all of the songs I loved such as Can’t Hold Us and Downtown. But they have since broken up and Macklemore decided to venture into his solo career. I first heard about the collaboration between the two artists, which made me interested going in. And the results were just pretty. This song is just divine in every sense of the word. I love the way the song opens up with the piano. It set a positive tone for the song in general. Kesha sounds amazing as always. Much like in Praying, she showcases her raw vocal talent throughout the song. I like the verses we get from Macklemore himself. He shows that he is still a good rapper overall. The lyrical content is creative and very well-written. I originally thought about placing this in My Top 10 Songs of 2018 when I first started working on the post. But there was plenty of competition and thus, it just missed the cut. So, I placed it at #11. This had a nice run on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown and was able to spend a week at #1. I’m glad it was able to get the success it deserves.
26. Ariana Grande – No Tears Left To Cry (#4) [5; Great]
I’ve been in love with Ariana Grande ever since her debut album Yours Truly. From there, she has continued making music and most of her singles are really good. My expectations were high coming into the song and after hearing the song in its entirety, she met almost every single one of my expectations. Sure, I can see why the line, “I’m lovin’, I’m livin’, I’m picking it up”, can be awkward, especially when she raps. But that doesn’t mean I dislike the song at all. In fact, it’s my #4 favorite song of 2018. And the primary reason is because Ariana has an amazing voice. She always uses it well in most of her singles and her performance in No Tears Left To Cry is no exception. It starts off as a slow ballad, but the song picks up and from there the rest is history. Looking deeper into the song, it does have some meaning in one form or another, especially after the tragedy that took place at Manchester. Anyway, it’s one of the few stand-outs from Sweetener, which was a decent album for the most part although it’s nowhere near her best work. I can’t really say anything about Thank U, Next until we get more singles from that album. But yeah, it’s nice to see how much Ariana has evolved since her days on Nickelodeon.
25. NOTD featuring Bea Miller – I Wanna Know (#6) [2; Mediocre]
Long before I started blogging, I first started listening to Hits 1 back in 2015 and I came across a artist named Bea Miller, who gave us songs like Fire ‘N Gold, which I kinda liked. Fast-forward to 2018, she collaborates with a new EDM duo named NOTD and they gave us I Wanna Know. I enjoyed it for a while and I was kinda glad that it was a mild success on Hits 1. But unfortunately, it just did not stick with me in the long run and now I find there’s nothing interesting about it anymore. Bea has a nice voice, but the production is a little too generic and it’s quite annoying. That’s all I can say about it. Yeah, this wasn’t really a good first impression for NOTD. They can do better.
24. Khalid featuring Normani – Love Lies (#2) [5; Great]
I remember legitimately disliking Location when I first found out about Khalid and I even placed it as my dishonorable mentions when I counted down My Bottom 10 Songs of 2017. I don’t know what the hell I was thinking back then, because as we got more music from him I started to realize that he actually has a nice voice. But then came the release of Love Lies. This was taken from the Love, Simon movie soundtrack, and that song came out early this year. Though it’s popularity started to catch on later in the year. Like I mentioned, Khalid is talented and has a nice voice. Here, we truly got to see what he’s capable of vocally. I also like the verses we get from Normani, who is a former member of Fifth Harmony. The production is solid and the lyrics are very well-written. I did think about including this in My Top 50 Songs Of 2018. But there was plenty of competition and I just simply didn’t have any room. However, I can still consider it as an honorable mention. I’m pretty excited as to what comes next for Khalid.
23. Camila Cabello featuring Young Thug – Havana (#1, 1 Week in 2017) [5; Great]
Her follow-up to Crying In The Club would become a major success late in 2017 and thus would be the beginning of good things to come for Camila Cabello. I’m going to be honest and just simply say that I did not like the song at first mainly because I was just tired of Camila and I wasn’t looking forward to hearing more from her at that time. But after many listens, I started to come around to it. When all was said and done, I’ve came to the realization that this was her best song. Havana tells a story very well about her hometown. Camila doesn’t sound bad at all. She shows that she is talented vocally, unlike a certain song where she doesn’t sound good. But we’ll get into that in just a bit. The Latin vibe pulls me in. I thought Young Thug’s verse was good, although I was a little disappointed that Hits 1 decided to edit out his verse. But whatever, that doesn’t make dislike the song any less now. I did rank this at #5 in My Top 50 Songs Of 2018. It was nice to see it become Camila’s biggest hit to date.
22. Camila Cabello – Never Be The Same (#1, 1 Week) [0; Horrid]
Following the success of Havana, Camila Cabello releases her follow-up from her self-titled album. Like with Havana, I was pretty mixed on Never Be The Same at first. Unlike Havana however, this one only ended up getting worse. But of course, this became a huge hit because of Camila Cabello’s rising popularity. I guess the production is okay. But the problem is Camila herself. She does not sound good at all. There’s not a single part in the song where she shines. The pre-chorus is just awful. Her vocals, combined with the questionable at best lyrical content, makes this an unpleasant listen. So, I’m not thrilled that this is ranked higher than Havana on the Hits 1 Year-End list. This is my least favorite song from Camila since she was with Fifth Harmony in Work From Home, which was absolute shit all around. Don’t get me wrong. She has quite a few songs I like such as Havana, which I just talked about, and Consequences. But Never Be The Same isn’t one of them. Here’s to hoping she can do better.
21. 5 Seconds Of Summer – Want You Back (#1, 1 Week) [4; Good]
Hits 1 has been madly in love with 5 Seconds Of Summer following the success of She Looks So Perfect back in 2014. And it wasn’t a surprise that they would pick up any single from these guys. Sure enough, they did pick up songs from their last album Sounds Good, Feels Good. But chart-wise none of them would match the success of its predecessor, although I did enjoy Jet Black Heart, which was their best song. I still enjoy it to this day. In 2018, they decided to go in a different direction with the release of Want You Back, which was a departure of the singles from their previous albums. By no surprise, Hits 1 picked it up and it was a #1 hit on the Weekend Countdown, because hello? It’s 5 Seconds Of Summer and they love those guys. I do like the song for the most part. But the release of Youngblood made this song a little inferior. But I did like that they were trying something new. The production is pretty solid, and I like their vocals. It does kinda remind me of Jet Black Heart from a lyrical standpoint. I like how they can be creative with the lyrics and taking it a step further. Overall, even though I don’t enjoy it as much as I used to, it’s still relatively solid.
20. Marshmello featuring Anne-Marie – Friends (#5) [0; Horrid]
Don’t you hate when go into the song with high expectations, only to be extremely disappointed at the end? Well, that’s exactly what happened when both Marshmello and Anne-Marie collaborated with each other in Friends. Every time I hear the song, I always think to myself, “how is this EDM?”, especially considering it was produced by an EDM artist like Marshmello. Coming into the song, I had high expectations following his collaboration with Selena Gomez in Wolves. But instead of getting something like that song, it turned out to be a complete disaster. So, why is this a disaster you might ask? Well, there’s a bunch of issues. First off, Anne-Marie does not sound good. Her vocals are underwhelming and the rapping in her verses was extremely unnecessary. Marshmello didn’t put forth into the production at all. It shows just how lazy he was in that aspect. Compare this to songs like Wolves and you can very easily tell the difference. The shitty production combined with Anne-Marie’s awful verses makes the song on its own unbearable. But making matters much, MUCH worse is that it’s a Friend-Zone anthem. It’s very poorly written all around. Simply put, Friends is just an embarrassment to the EDM genre. Marshmello hit rock bottom with this song. It’s sad that this was actually a huge hit, and it just shows how much Marshmello has changed for the worse. I’m sure most people here will say the same about Zedd, but we’ll get more into him later on. Yeah, everything about this song is just shit. I don’t know how we let this become a hit, honestly.
19. Charlie Puth – How Long (#1, 2 Weeks) [4; Good]
Following the success of Attention, Charlie Puth would eventually release How Long. After hearing the song in its entirety, it was clear that Charlie had improved from the dreck that was Nine Track Mind. These first two singles gave us a glimpse on what to expect coming into Voicenotes. And sure enough, after the release of his album, Charlie has indeed changed for the better. How Long isn’t anything special, but I still like the song. I do like the creativity put into the production as opposed to his other singles from Nine Track Mind, which didn’t have a lot to it. The groove is nice, and Charlie showcases his vocal talent. Overall, it’s a good song. But after hearing his latest album, it just made the song feel inferior, at least to me. Still, I’m interested to see what Charlie has next.
18. Niall Horan – On The Loose (#3) [5; Great]
Niall Horan chose to take the path of releasing acoustic-pop following One Direction’s hiatus and the results turned out to be pretty good. He first gave us This Town, which was a sweet song even though it didn’t quite stick with me in the long run. Then he gave us the upbeat Slow Hands and Too Much To Ask, the former which ended up being a bit hit for last year. I skimmed through his latest album, Flicker, to find what other good songs he had in his disposal. And lo and behold, On The Loose turns out to be one of them. I originally thought about placing this on My Top 50 Songs of 2018 when I first starting doing that post. But there was a lot of competition from other songs and thus I was only able to put this as one of my honorable mentions. The production here is neat. Niall showcases his vocal talent more. I love the use of the electric guitar. It’s too bad that the guitar solo had to be edited out on Hits 1, which is a shame because that was the best part. I can say that this was one of the more upbeat songs we’ve gotten from Niall.
17. Shawn Mendes – In My Blood (#1, 2 Weeks) [4; Good]
After Illuminate was not to anyone’s liking, many were questioning the direction Shawn Mendes was taking. Now, I’ll just say that he’s had quite a few good songs in the past, such as Mercy and There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, and I enjoyed them both. When In My Blood was released, I immediately liked it. The lead single to his latest album is definitely better than Treat You Better in most ways. There are quite a few people who genuinely love the song, and I can see why. However, I won’t go too far and say it’s all that amazing, but I do like the song in general. This came around the same time as Lost In Japan, which I thought was better. And it debuted straight to the countdown on the week he was hosting. The Kings Of Leon vibes got me there. The lyrics are nicely done. Shawn has been improving on that aspect. He sounds good with his vocals, and that was something missing in songs like Treat You Better, where he sounded whiny. Shawn has definitely come a long way since he made a breakthrough with Stitches, especially after hearing his self-titled album. It shows just how much he has evolved since then. He’s had better songs from the album such as Youth and Lost In Japan. But In My Blood was certainly something I did like.
16. Lauv – I Like Me Better (#5) [0; Horrid]
One of the things that I like about Hits 1 is that they pick up music from unknown artists. There are plenty of songs that I like that end up being underrated, though there have been some which ended up being successful here despite not doing well everywhere else. Lauv is one of those unknown artists. Unfortunately, he did not make a good first impression at all with his debut single I Like Me Better. I first talked about this song when it was trending on the YouTube 15 back in 2017. I had simply stated that the production is annoying, though his vocals were decent, hence why I found it okay from the beginning. However, once I started to pay attention to the lyrical content, that’s when I started to realize just how bad the song really is. I’m going to make it simple: this song is shit. The line, “I like me better when I’m with you” is just cringe-worthy in every sense of the word. When combined with the awful production that I just mentioned, that makes the song even worse and it’s torture to my ears. And not helping is the fact that it spent a seemingly long time on the countdown. To say this song is just simply bad is an understatement. To say this was so annoying to the point where it’s just torture is probably the best way to describe it. I’m sure Lauv can come up with another song not as cringe-worthy as this.
15. Selena Gomez – Back To You (#2) [5; Great]
While Selena helped produce 13 Reasons Why series, she also had been making new music to accompany the show’s second season. Like I said before, I had been mixed on Selena’s music lately, especially after Revival wasn’t all that good and her subsequent singles were not all to my liking (except for a few). I had no idea what to expect coming into the song. After hearing this in full, I was genuinely impressed with how it turned out. First off, Selena shows that she has a great voice. That was missing in some songs from Revival and in Bad Liar, which absolutely sucked. There’s no whispering or mumbling in any part of the song. She shines in the chorus. I like the production and the lyrical content. This was pretty successful as it was able to peak at #2 on the Weekend Countdown. I’m sure we’ll be getting more from her very soon. But yeah, it’s nice to see Selena evolve for the better.
14. Fall Out Boy – The Last Of The Real Ones (#1, 2 Weeks) [5; Great]
MANIA has been a relatively interesting album for Fall Out Boy, especially since it was a departure from their previous works. Their lead single, Young And Menace, was just a mess all over and thus, it was the worst song they had released. Then came Champion, which was a return to their roots. Hold Me Tight Or Don’t was something cool as it had a Latin vibe to it. The Last Of The Real Ones, however, is easily the best. I thought the music video was pretty cool where they had two llamas attacking a guy and placing him in the trunk of the car. But anyway, the song is spot on. I love the instrumentation overall. The piano work is solid and I love the build-up leading to the chorus, where everything kicks in. Partick’s voice is good and he showed me that he hasn’t lost a step. It was a success on Hits 1 because they still show their love for Fall Out Boy. It’s the best thing these guys have had in a while.
13. Imagine Dragons – Thunder (#1, 5 Weeks Total; 2 in 2017, 3 in 2018) [3; Decent]
I figured this song’s success would carry on into 2018, given that the momentum was still pretty strong late in 2017. I was pretty split on the song at first. But after more listens, I started to enjoy it. I even placed it in My Top 50 Songs of 2017 over Believer. But as time moved along, I started to fully realize why I didn’t like it at first. Sure, I find it to be catchy, and I do like the lyrical content about dreaming of doing bigger things. But the song is repetitive and the chipmunk voice in the background got on my nerves a little bit. Thus, I started to grow out of the song. Now I’m not saying it’s a bad song in my eyes because it definitely isn’t. But Imagine Dragons have done much better. I enjoyed songs like Radioactive, which was actually the first song I’ve heard from them. Evolve wasn’t that good of an album, but it did have quite a few stand-outs like Believer, Walking The Wire, and Whatever It Takes. But Thunder isn’t one of them. Sure, I do still kinda like the song, but it just didn’t stick with me in the long run. One thing’s for sure, though: it’s better than a certain song that I won’t mention.
12. Halsey – Bad At Love (#1, 2 Weeks in 2017) [5; Great]
Before Closer became a hit, my relationship with Halsey’s music was pretty mixed. I remember first listening to Ghost thinking it was a good song and she has a nice voice. Then she gave us New Americana, which was a huge mess. Following that, she collaborated with rising EDM duo The Chainsmokers in Closer, which I still absolutely love to this day. From there, I was anticipating any release from Halsey. Although I didn’t exactly enjoy Now Or Never, I did grew to kinda like it. But Bad At Love was a whole different story. This was actually my #6 favorite song of 2018, where I counted down My Top 50 Songs for the year. I know to some, it may not seem like it. But here’s the thing: the song never really faded on me. In fact, I’ve been in love the Bad At Love ever since it’s release. To put it simply, it’s a step up from Now Or Never. Here, she shows what she is capable of vocally. I like the production overall. When looking at the lyrics, it talks about her relationship with her past lovers, such as G-Eazy. It was nice to see her take that approach because I thought it was pretty creative and nicely written. After much though, I can now this to be one of the best from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, which I thought was pretty good.
11. Maroon 5 – Wait (#4) [1; Bad]
As I mentioned several times, I’ve not been impressed with Maroon 5’s latest music, especially following the release of Don’t Wanna Know and Cold, the former being their worst song. Wait is another example that just shows how much Maroon 5 has changed for the worse. Sure, Adam’s voice is okay. But the biggest problem is that there’s no band here. The trap skitters are pretty annoying for the most part. I don’t like the lyrical content very much. So yeah, this song is not good overall. What’s sad about it is that I enjoyed Maroon 5’s music since the start of the century. Songs such as She Will Be Loved are one of my favorites from them. Even the singles from V weren’t all that bad (although I absolutely hated This Summer’s Gonna Hurt…, which was my least favorite song from them up to that point). But after hearing Red Pill Blues, I wasn’t all that impressed. Don’t get me wrong. They’ve had a couple of singles I like such as What Lovers Do, which is easily the best song off of the album. But I’m not sold on their current direction as of right now. Maroon 5 can do better.
10. Walk The Moon – One Foot (#2) [5; Great]
I remember first hearing Shut Up And Dance when I first started listening to Hits 1 and thinking “Wow, this is phenomenal”. That song was a huge favorite of mine from 2015. I was anticipating any new music from Walk The Moon and sure enough when One Foot was released, they didn’t disappoint. Those who love the song can explain more about it in detail better than me, but I’ll try to do my best. It is very upbeat and it puts me in a happy mood. I love how these guys sound energetic throughout the song. It’s like they had some sort of fun recording the song. The production is just divine. Walk The Moon impressed me again with this single. Their latest album, What If Nothing, is pretty good and if you haven’t already, feel free to check it out. It has plenty of good songs such as this and Kamikaze. It was nice seeing it become successful on Hits 1 peaking at #2, despite it not doing so well elsewhere. I sure wish they weren’t one-hit wonders because their music is just awesome.
9. Bebe Rexha featuring Florida Georgia Line – Meant To Be (#1, 1 Week) [0; Horrid]
I know there are those who dislike Bebe Rexha, and I can understand why. But I’m not among that crowd who thinks that way. She has had good music in the past. Unfortunately, I can’t say that about Meant To Be. I questioned the song’s existence from the beginning, especially when she is collaborating with Florida Georgia Line. I absolutely hated Cruise, which was one my least favorite songs for 2013. And I probably would’ve placed it as my worst of the year if it weren’t for songs like Blurred Lines and Harlem Snake, both of which I also detested. I ranked all of them in My Bottom 5 in Adrian’s Rankdown (Bottom 3 to be exact). And speaking of rankdowns, I’m going to be doing the Hits 1’s Top 45 of 2018 like I said at the beginning of this post. I’m sure it’ll be a whole lot of fun. But anyway, almost everything about Meant To Be is just terrible. Florida Georgia Line sounds like shit throughout the whole song. Bebe couldn’t save it, unfortunately. I like her verse, but it doesn’t stand out. The lyrics are poorly written and some of the lines make me cringe. Overall, this song is just a poor attempt at trying to be country while also trying to be pop, and it’s extremely disappointing to say that about Bebe Rexha, especially when she had’s better. Yet neither of her previous singles got anywhere near the success this song had. But the sad thing is, I’d rather hear this than I’m A Mess.
8. Taylor Swift – Delicate (#1, 3 Weeks) [5; Great]
Reputation has been quite an interesting album for Taylor Swift, given that it’s a bit of a departure from 1989. I enjoyed many of her singles from her last album. Reputation on the other hand, was a different story. I didn’t quite enjoy her singles unlike 1989, but they were still good nonetheless. Of course, many did not like Look What You Made Me Do mainly because it was controversial overall. From there, her singles weren’t really successful on the charts. But then, Delicate came along and it was loved by many. I didn’t really think that way at first. But I did grew to love it over time. It reminded me of some of the singles from 1989, which like I said was her best album. The music video shows that Taylor is living her care-free life and not caring about what others think. I realize that it’s basically a reflection of what the song is truly about. The production here is decent. Taylor sounds great with her voice. She doesn’t really disappoint me with her music, most of the time. I enjoyed plenty of songs from her ever since she was relevant in the late 2000’s. Delicate is one of those songs. Even though it doesn’t quite live up to her best work, it was definitely something I enjoyed throughout the summer.
7. Hailee Steinfeld & Alesso featuring Florida Georgia Line and Watt – Let Me Go (#1, 1 Week) [5; Great]
Although I’ve never really watched any of the Pitch Perfect movies, I did find out about Hailee Steinfeld’s existence when she released her first solo single Love Myself, which was back in 2015. Although it wasn’t particularly amazing, it still had me thinking, “Wow, she has a nice voice”. Following that, she did release Starving with Zedd and I actually loved the song. But it got annoying after a while and yes, even I’ll admit it was pretty overrated. Let Me Go, on the other hand, is a different story. Similar to Starving, I did love the song initially. The only difference is that the song is amazing in and of itself, and it stuck with me in the long run. I actually did include it in My Top 50 Songs of 2017, and I ranked it at #46, I believe. But that was at the time the song’s popularity on Hits 1 was just starting to take off. It slowly, but surely made its way into the Top 5 at the beginning of the year and would eventually hit #1. I decided to rank the song again and I placed it at #3 in My Top 50 Songs of 2018. To sum it all up, Hailee shows was she is truly capable of vocally. The lyrical content is creative and well-written, and that was something in which Starving severely lacks. Florida Georgia Line adds a lot to the song, especially in the second verse. Unlike songs such as Cruise and Meant To Be, these guys actually sound good. In short, this song is amazing. While it may not have been successful everywhere else, it deserved a good amount of recognition on Hits 1.
6. Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé – Perfect (#1, 2 Weeks Total; 1 in 2017, 1 in 2018) [5; Great]
It was at the start of 2017 when Ed Sheeran released Shape Of You. It would go on to become his biggest hit and thus it set the tone for what was to come. So, it was only a matter of time until his next single would follow a similar path. And sure enough, he decided to choose Perfect. As I mentioned quite a few times, the title of the song speaks for itself. To put it short, it’s basically a better version of Thinking Out Loud, which of course was his biggest hit at that time. I absolutely love Ed’s vocals in the song. The lyrics are nicely done. I ranked this as my #7 favorite song of 2018, and for good reason. There are many different remixes to the song, and it just so happens that the one with Beyoncé is the best in my opinion. I’m sure there are some here who will disagree, but this song is just beautiful. Whenever I get married someday, I want this to be our song. It’s perfect for any wedding.
5. 5 Seconds Of Summer – Youngblood (#1, 5 Weeks) [5; Great]
I’m really not surprised to see this being ranked so high, because of course Hits 1 loves 5 Seconds Of Summer. I didn’t particularly cared for the song at first. But overtime, I started to love it to the point where I included it in My Top 50 Songs Of 2018, where I ranked it at #33. Much like with Want You Back, it’s very different compared to their previous singles such as Jet Black Heart, which is still far and away their best song. I like their vocals overall. They sound better than that of its predecessor. The production is just solid. Also, something about the line, “I’m just a dead man walking tonight,” pulls me in. It was nice to see it become a success worldwide since She Looks So Perfect and it’s still going pretty strong on the Weekend Countdown as of this typing. I’m looking forward to what else they have in store.
4. Panic! At The Disco – High Hopes (#1, 8 Weeks) [5; Great]
It’s one thing for Hits 1 to fall in love with a song. We’ve seen it happen many times before. But it’s another when a song actually becomes a big hit worldwide. That’s pretty much what happened with Youngblood, which I just talked about. And it’s exactly what is happening with High Hopes right now. Much like with 5 Seconds Of Summer, Hits 1 has been in love with Panic! At The Disco following the success of Victorious back in 2016. So it’s not a surprise to see Say Amen (Saturday Night) become a huge hit on this countdown, but we’ll talk about that in just a bit. When Hits 1 first picked up on High Hopes, I figured it would become successful on the Weekend Countdown. And sure enough, it ended up doing just that. But little did we know that it would soon end up becoming a major hit elsewhere. Anyway, High Hopes is just divine all around. Brendon Urie showcases his vocal talent throughout the song. I love the way he can hit those high notes, and that’s been a recurring theme in most of their music. When looking more into the song, he tells us about having high expectations and being able to reach for the super stars. And I just recently found out that Brendon actually had a small job while making music back then. I like how he shows his struggles of trying to be successful and being able to keep on trying. I love the use of the trumpets. They sound very good. It’s nice to see it become a success on Hits 1 because hello, they love Brendon Urie and company. However, I’m also pleased to see it peaked higher than I Write Sin, Not Tragedies on the Billboard Hot 100 at #5. We’ll see if it ends up getting higher than that as we continue into 2019. With the song still gaining a lot of momentum as of this typing, it’s almost certain that it’ll appear on the Hits 1’s Top 45 Of 2019.
3. Panic! At The Disco – Say Amen (Saturday Night) (#1, 4 Weeks) [5; Great]
We get a second straight appearance from Panic! At The Disco with this song. I remember hearing this for the first time as soon as it came out and I was impressed. This was one of two singles that came out simultaneously, with the other being (F**k A) Silver Lining, which I thought was pretty good as well. Say Amen (Saturday Night) is another one of those songs in which Brendon Urie shows how talented he is vocally. I love the way he can hit the high notes, especially at the ending. The production is top-notch across the board. Of course, because Hits 1 loves Panic! At The Disco, this ended up becoming a #1 and I was definitely pleased with that. It was certainly an enjoyable song throughout much of the summer.
2. Imagine Dragons – Whatever It Takes (#1, 1 Week) [5; Great]
The success of Believer and Thunder helped Imagine Dragons rise back to prominence. After hearing Evolve, I found quite a few good songs from the album. Whatever It Takes just so happens to be one of those songs. I love how its fast-paced. Production-wise, it’s a step up from Thunder, which I didn’t particularly find special anymore. I do like Dan Reynolds’s fast vocals. The lyrical content is nice. It tells us how he is going above and beyond to be able to achieve his goals. I’m sure most of us can relate to that. I’ve been in love with the song and that has never changed. In fact, I ranked it at #21 in My Top 50 Songs of 2018. You can check it out if you guys haven’t already. This was definitely one of the more upbeat songs from Imagine Dragons, and a nice way to close out Evolve.
1. Zedd featuring Maren Morris and Grey – The Middle (#1, 9 Weeks) [6; Best Song Of The Year]
Around this time, Zedd was riding high with the success of Stay, which was ranked at #2 on Hits 1’s Top 45 Of 2017. If it weren’t for Ed Sheeran, that song could’ve been #1. So he decided to try again when he released The Middle, and sure enough it worked. There have been quite a few songs in which I have an unpopular opinion on. The Middle just so happens to be one of those songs. It is my #1 favorite song of 2018, and it just so happens to be Hits 1’s #1 song for the year. I’ve been in love with the song ever since it’s release. It was used in commercials promoting Target and soon enough, this ended up becoming a huge hit. I like how Zedd uses the ticking clock, similar to the one used in Stay. I find it to be very cool and unique. I absolutely adore Maren Morris. Her singles such as 80’s Mercedes and My Church were amazing. My expectations were pretty high for Maren when the collaboration was announced, and I was very pleased with the way it turned out. She sounds amazing throughout the song. Again, I get that many people here are not very fond of The Middle (as well as songs such as Stay and Happy Now) because they think Zedd is selling out. But I’m not among that crowd who thinks that way. I enjoyed this song all year long and it hasn’t faded on me. I’m pleased that Hits 1 treated it very well and it got the success it deserved. The collaboration turned out pretty nicely in my book and I’m glad it got so much love.

Overall Grade: 172/225 = 76.4% (C)
Overall, the grade was down by just one point from last year, which was 77%. But it’s still not bad. I’m sure we can improve in 2019. Hopefully, we can end up with more better music.
And now it’s finally over. I hope you all enjoyed reading this! I’m sure my rankdown will be a lot of fun and if all goes well, I may end up doing more in the near future. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. Again, thank you for reading. Have a good day, and stay cool. 🙂
