AT40: Sam Smith & Normani (1) – Week Of June 8, 2019

Hello, fam! I hope everyone here has had a good week. I haven’t yet thought about what I want to do for my 200,000 Pageview Special. I’ll try to think of something and hopefully get it posted sometime this month. We’ll see. As far as this week’s countdown went, it was interesting. There’s quite a bit I want to talk about. New Entrants:
– Kicking things off for this week is the return of P!NK with her single titled Walk Me Home. I initially liked this one at first. I still do somewhat, but it has slightly worn on me with time (though I did grow back into it recently). I definitely like P!NK’s voice in the song. She hasn’t lost a step in terms of her voice and I think the lyrics are nice. But the rest of the song isn’t much compared to what she has done in the past. She recently released her new album titled Hurts 2B Human, though I haven’t gotten the chance to hear it yet. Overall, good song, but P!NK has had better.

– I’m sure many of you are tired of Halsey, but not me. She has another new song making its debut this week, in the form of Nightmare. I do think this is better than Without Me. I like Halsey’s voice in the song. She sounds better in Nightmare than she does in her predecessor, though I can do without the screaming in the chorus. The production is pretty solid, but I do question some of the lyrics. That’s all I have to say about this one. Overall, I like the song, though I can picture myself getting sick of it pretty soon.
Best Debut Of The Week: Walk Me Home by P!NK

If You Had My Blurbs
– So, we have two exits this week, including the all important one. First off, we have Be Alright by Dean Lewis, which was hated by some but liked by others. And while I myself did like it for a while, I knew it wasn’t going to stick with me in the big picture. But it was never something I hated in the end. But more importantly, we finally say goodbye to Girls Like You. And with that, this is the first time in a while that we don’t have a song from Maroon 5 on the countdown. Talk about a run. And we just recently learned that Adam Levigne is no longer on The Voice. I heard that Gwen Stefani is replacing him. It’ll be interesting to see how well she does.

– We have a brand new #1 song this week! Sam Smith & Normani have both taken the crown with Dancing With A Stranger. This is Sam’s first #1 song on the countdown since Stay With Me in 2014. It’s definitely an awesome song in every aspect. It shows how talented these guys are both lyrically and vocally. I’m glad this became a hit. I much prefer this over any other song in the Top 10.

– We get two Top 10 entrants, both of which I’m not excited about. There’s Talk by Khalid, which I recently realized that it’s not a good song. Khalid has done better. We also have I Don’t Care by Ed Sheeran featuring Justin Bieber, which I’m slowly starting to lose interest in. I’m pretty sure that one will be here for a while, so I better get used to it.
– On that note…yeah folks. Not gonna lie, but I’m starting to realize that Cool by Jonas Brothers isn’t that good of a song either. Aside from the relatively weak production, I’ve started to pay attention to the lyrics and realized how bad it is. Here, they’re bragging about how cool they are and some of the other stuff. I don’t know about you, but I think it sends a bad message. So yeah, I hope it doesn’t become a hit (which it probably won’t given that it’s not gaining any momentum elsewhere). They did release their album Happiness Begins this week, and I’m sure there are songs better than this.

– Of course, I grew into Don’t Call Me Up and this is the week it ends up dropping. Just great.

– So…we still have Youngblood on the countdown, and it is also looking likely to make it past a year. Apparently, longevity is king at this moment since there seems to be a lot of songs lasting over a year (e.g. New Rules by Dua Lipa, and now Love Lies by Khalid featuring Normani).

– And while we’re on that subject, High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco looks destined to last a year on Hits 1. Though, I doubt the same will ring true on the American Top 40 given that it hasn’t lasted nearly as long. But you never know for sure. If Love Lies was capable of accomplishing this, then High Hopes can.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Tattoo (How ‘Bout You) by In Real Life: There’s not much about the song that’s worth caring about. The production is pretty weak and I’m not feeling their vocals. So yeah, not really a fan of this.
