AT40: Jonas Brothers – Weeks Of May 25, 2019 & June 1, 2019

New Entrants:
– So instead of me reviewing the new entrants individually like I normally do, I’m going to go through those in one paragraph to save me time. All My Friends by AJ Mitchell is pretty solid. I like the production in this one and I think AJ has a good voice. The lyrics are nice as well. Then we have Billie Eilish with another song on the countdown titled Bad Guy. Personally, I like that one better than her other two singles, in part because of the production and her unique voice stands out in the chorus. Finally, we have the big return of Shawn Mendes with If I Can’t Have You. Although this is basically a rehash of There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, I’m in love with his new song, mainly because of the Latin vibe and Shawn having a smooth voice that fits well for the track.

Best Debut Of That Week: If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes

My Top 5 Picks
1. If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes
2. Dancing With A Stranger by Sam Smith featuring Normani

Biggest Rise Of That Week: If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes (+8)

New Entrants:
– Kicking things off for last week, we have Lizzo who seems to be gaining momentum at this moment. She brings us Juice. I talked about this one when it debuted on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. To sum it all up, I like the throwback vibe and Lizzo sounds good in the chorus. That’s all I can say about that one. Then, we have NOTD who makes his very first appearance on the AT40 with So Close. It’s better than I Wanna Know in a way. The production is decent, but I’m not a fan of Georgia Ku’s voice in the song. I feel like the song would be better if it were sung by somebody else. Last, but not least, we have the big returns of both Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber with I Don’t Care. While I do like the song overall, it’s really not much compared to what Ed has released in the past. I think they sound good here, but the production is far from special. It may be green for now, but it could easily change to blue.

Best Debut Of That Week: Lizzo – Juice

My Top 5 Picks
1. If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Lauv featuring Troye Sivan – I’m So Tired… (+14)

New Entrants:
– We have two new entrants this week as we start the month of June. First up is the collaboration between SZA, The Weeknd, and Travis Scott in their single titled Power Is Power, taken from The Game Of Thrones soundtrack. So, just recently the television show came to an end a little under a month ago. Me personally, I haven’t really watched it, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. Anyway, onto the song itself. It’s a rehash of one of my favorite songs of 2018, Pray For Me. The production is great and I love the beat.Sure, All of these artists stood out to me with their verses. The song is proof as to why they’re talented singers. Everything about it is really good and I hope it can stay for a while at least.

– For the fifth week in a row, we have a song that’s debuted in the Top 20. This seems to be a recurring theme throughout 2019. 5 Seconds Of Summer have another new single titled Easier. Having listened to the song in its entirety, I feel like this is a bit of a step down from what these guys have previously released. But this is still good. I like the vocals we get from them. The production is good as well, but it just feels inferior to me. It shows how much they’re distancing themselves from being a band, kinda like Maroon 5 in recent years. Overall I like this, but I doubt this’ll end up sticking with me in the long run.

‘Cause Blurbs Are Blurbs
– We’ll begin with our exits. To start, Last Hurrah was a better song for Bebe Rexha and it deserved to do well. But of course, that ultimately didn’t happen. It’s a shame that Meant To Be and I’m A Mess got big, yet Last Hurrah didn’t do much of anything. Also, it’s nice to see Low Key leaving. That song was not good and overall, disappointing for Ally Brooke. She does have another single which is on the YouTube 15, and I’ll talk more about that song later on.

Sucker being at #1 for 10 weeks is really pushing it. I still kinda like the song, but at some point, it’ll start to get on my nerves just a bit by being up there too long. How about we let the other songs have a chance?

– On that note, we get two new entrants (Walk Me Home and If I Can’t Have You) in the Top 5 this week. That’s probably the first time it’s happened in a while. I’m not sure how I feel about Walk Me Home being there, given that P!NK has done better. But the entrant from If I Can’t Have You is welcome. I’m sure that’ll be the song that replaces Sucker eventually, and I wouldn’t mind at all.

I Don’t Care being in the Top 10 is no surprise. Although I do like the song, it’s pretty weak compared to what Ed Sheeran has done in the past. Though I’m sure it’ll be here for a long while. But if anything, I’d rather listen to this than his newer song, which I’ll get to in just a bit.

– In not-so good news, we have I’m So Tired… making a massive jump back into the Top 20 this week. This song is terrible and it does not deserve to be here. I honestly don’t know why we’re letting this become the next I Like Me Better. Seriously, it’s time to end this.

Close To Me finally dropped out of the Top 20 for the first time in quite a while. The song had a nice run while it lasted. We’ll see how long it can stay. I do hope a song like Sixteen can debut soon.

– What’s with Juice dropping just as its gaining popularity elsewhere? That’s pretty unfortunate. And I’m okay with So Close dropping as well. I would appreciate if it didn’t hang around for too long like its predecessor.

– So, there is a remix to Out Of Love which was released by a EDM artist named DEVAULT. Objectively, it’s slightly better than the original as far as the production goes. But it kills the purpose of the song, which is meant to be slow. Still, it isn’t bad, but Alessia has had better.

Hit-Bound:

Ryan Sampson took over Hit-Bound this week in place of Mikey Piff. Here’s the list:

  • Khalid – Talk
  • Katy Perry – Never Really Over (DEBUT)
  • Alec Benjamin – If We Have Each Other
  • Ed Sheeran featuring Chance The Rapper and PnB Rock – Cross Me (DEBUT)
  • Mabel – Don’t Call Me Up
  • Jonas Brothers – Cool
  • Ava Max – So Am I
  • Andy Grammer – Don’t Give Up On Me
  • The Chainsmokers featuring Bebe Rexha – Call You Mine (DEBUT)
  • P!NK – Hustle
  • Bazzi – Paradise
  • Push Baby – Mama’s House
  • In Real Life – Crazy AF
  • Martin Garrix featuring Macklemore and Patrick Stump – Summer Days
  • Kygo featuring Rita Ora – Carry On

Entrant Reviews:
– I would save the best debut for last, but I always go in order no matter what. We have my celeb crush, Katy Perry with her new single titled Never Really Over! I’ve been a big fan of her for a long time and she usually doesn’t disappoint me (most of the time). I’m sure most of you know how I feel about the song. Everything about it is just amazing. Katy vocals are just divine and I love the production. I’ll save most of my words for when it inevitably debuts.
– Next, we have an uninteresting collaboration between Ed Sheeran, Chance The Rapper, and PnB Rock with their single titled Cross Me. I usually am a defender for Ed Sheeran because he has released plenty of solid music in the past. But this song is just not good, in part because the production and the beat are not interesting. I don’t like the verses we get from both Chance and PnB Rock. They sound pretty bad. Ed sounds decent though, but even he can’t save the song from being mediocre at best. So yeah, this is my least favorite single from him. Let’s move on.
– Finally, we have yet another song released by The Chainsmokers. This time, they bring along Bebe Rexha with Call You Mine. I was this close to loving the song because Bebe sounds great. But then the underwhelming drop affected my thoughts on the song overall. This is basically an attempt to recreate Closer and This Feeling, both songs which are amazing. But this one falls short. It’s a decent song vocally, but the weak drop kills the potential.

  • Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie – ME!
  • Ed Sheeran featuring Chance The Rapper and PnB Rock – Cross Me

Song Reviews:
– We’ve got Lizzo with a song that’s actually been out in about a year or so, in the form of Truth Hurts. I do kinda like this, but it lacks the groove that it had in Juice. The lyrics are good, though. Not much else outside of that.

– Up next is Ally Brooke with the follow-up to the disappointment that is of Low Key. Her new single is titled Lips Don’t Lie. This is a step up from its predecessor. Sure, it’s not all that amazing, but it’s in improvement. Ally sounds better here, and the production is decent. I also think the contribution from A Boogie With Da Hoodie is solid. So yeah, this is good overall.

OneRepublic are back, and this time they bring us Rescue Me. Although this is not quite the best they’ve done, the song shows that they haven’t lost a step. Ryan sounds good as always with his voice, and I like the instrumentation overall. This is pretty good and I hope to see it on the countdown soon.

– Next up, we have the return of Jax Jones, and he collaborates with Jess Glynne in their latest single One Touch. I was juggling on whether to put this in green or blue, and I decided to stick with the latter for now. I like Jess’s voice in the song. But production-wise, it just feels a little underwhelming compared to what Jax Jones has done in the past. This could grow on me, but right now I’m not totally in love with it.

– Finally, we have DJ Khaled with Nipsey Hussle and John Legend in their new single titled Higher. Right off the bat, this is just a solid song overall. I like the verse we get from Nipsey Hussle. I think he sounds good. But John Legend really stood out to me vocally, especially in the chorus. I’d say this is one of DJ Khaled better songs.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Echosmith – Over My Head: I do like this quite a bit. Although I much preferred the singles off of Inside A Dream such as 18 and Get Into My Car. But it’s too bad their music hasn’t really took off since Cool Kids was a hit back in 2014.

QOTW: Who are you rooting for in this year’s NBA Finals? Warriors or Raptors?
