2019: A Year In Review (Part 4): The Chainsmokers & 5 Seconds Of Summer – Hits 1’s Top 45 Of 2019

CH15Hello, fam! Another year has gone by on Hits 1. Honestly, where has the time gone? It seemed like yesterday we were ringing in the new year. Now we’re just a few days away from the start of the new decade. Wow! Earlier this year, I did a rankdown based on Hits 1’s Top 45 Of 2018. It was a thrill. I don’t plan on doing one for this year’s list as I have other stuff that I want to work on. I might end up doing something different. We’ll see. Anyway, let’s get on with it!

Hits 1 counts down the Top 45 songs of any given year. It’s similar to what they do on the Weekend Countdown each and every week. How this’ll work is that I’ll be doing my take on every song that’s on the list in full detail and I’ll share my thoughts on them, similar to what I did last year.  The number in parentheses is the song’s peak position during its tenure, and I’ll also include the number of weeks it spent at #1.  So with that being said, here is the color code that I’ll be using and the number of points each song gets:

  • Red – Crap (0 Points)
  • Cyan – Bad (1 Point)
  • Yellow – Mediocre (2 Points)
  • Pink – Decent (3 Points)
  • Blue – Good (4 Points)
  • Green – Great (5 Points)

Those are the six ranks that I’ll be using. In addition, orange and purple will remain as my worst and best songs, respectively. The best song on the list will be given 6 points instead of the 5 points it would normally get. Following my take on all of the songs, I’ll be doing a Top 45 Breakdown similar to the Top 20 Breakdown that I do on a weekly basis, and I’ll give out my final score at the end. Just a fair warning before I get started: what you’re about to see is 100% based on my opinion. You may not agree with some of these, and that’s okay unless you start an argument with me. That should cover just about everything. It is now time for me to get on with the reviewing!

But before I do any of that, I’m going to use a time machine and go back to last year’s Top 45. The color code that I use for Year-End posts is on the sidebar if you want to check that out. With that, here is last year’s Top 45:

My grade for last year’s countdown came out as a 76.4%, which I thought was pretty good. 2018 wasn’t the best year overall, but there were still a lot of stand outs. We’ll see how we fared in 2019. I’ve covered the first part. Now, I’m ready to dive into this list. It is my honor to present to you Hits 1’s Top 45 Songs Of 2019! Let’s do this!

45. Lizzo – Good As Hell (#3) [5; Great]
Kicking things off is an artist who has become a big name throughout the second half of the year.  I’m actually surprised this ended up making the Year-End countdown, mostly because it feels more like a 2020 hit than 2019.  Good As Hell was actually released in 2016 and is currently another huge hit for Lizzo.  I fell in love with the song ever since it started gaining momentum. I like her voice here and the backing chorus as well.  She has the charisma to be able to shine throughout the song.  The production is pretty divine as well with the nice piano work and some other good stuff.  It’s basically another one of those self-empowerment anthems and I’m a sucker for those.  It’s an divine song from Lizzo and it’s nice to see her gain recognition.  I’m glad her momentum is carrying on into 2020.

44. Post Malone – Circles (#2) [4; Good]
I’m also quite surprised this made the Year-End list.  This feels more like a 2020 hit to me than a 2019 hit.  But its momentum was very strong throughout late 2019, so I guess it makes sense that it’s here.  It’s a little more fast-paced than any of the songs I’ve heard from Post Malone.  The guitar is pretty nice and I quite like the groove here.  Post has a good voice and he uses it well, even though he doesn’t quite stand out in the chorus.  I do like how he tells a story about his relationship struggles even when the season continues to change.  I do quite like this song for the most part.   But there are better songs from Hollywood’s Bleeding such as Take What You Want, Sunflower, and A Thousand Bad Times.  Circles isn’t exactly memorable, but it’s solid overall.

43. OneRepublic – Rescue Me (#12) [4; Good]
The comeback single from OneRepublic was something that I quite enjoyed.  I think it’s pretty catchy and I like Ryan Tedder’s smooth voice here.  But it pales in comparison to what these guys have done in the past.  I’ve been a fan of OneRepublic for quite some time.  Their earlier albums had plenty of singles that I enjoyed.  I adore Apologize with a burning passion and it’s easily one of my favorite songs from them.  Rescue Me doesn’t quite live up to that, but I still think it’s pretty solid.  I don’t have much else I can say beyond that.

42. TWENTY ØNE PILØTS – The Hype (#9) [5; Great]
This is one of two songs from TWENTY ØNE PILØTS that ended up making the Hits 1 Year-End Countdown.  I’ve been a fan of what these guys had to offer for a while.  I enjoyed Blurryface as a whole and I fell in love with Trench as well.  Jumpsuit was a awesome comeback for them and is easily my favorite song off the album.  The Hype is pretty divine as well.  Yeah, it may not hit as hard as far as the production goes.  But it is solid overall.  It has good instrumentation and I like the beat.  Tyler sounds pretty good with his voice.  I like the lyrics about how a person going through a difficult time and being able to get through those tough times.  I think it’s something most of us can relate to.  Overall, it’s another highlight off the great album that is of Trench.

41. Halsey – Graveyard (#3) [5; Great]
I’ve definitely been mixed on Halsey’s latest music.  I enjoyed some of what Hopeless Fountain Kingdom has had to offer.  But her singles after that were not necessarily to my liking.  Without Me was just okay, while Nightmare was a mess all around and would end up leaving a bad taste in my mouth.  But she did redeem herself with Graveyard.  I like the intro with the guitar and from there we get to hear her voice, which actually sounds pretty good.  The rest of the production is pretty solid and it blends very nicely with her voice.  I think the lyrics are nicely written.  It doesn’t quite live up to the greatness she had before, but it’s a hell of a lot better than that of Nightmare.  Her new album does come out next year and I’m hoping her latest singles will follow the path of this song.  But we’ll see what ultimately ends up happening.

40. Lauv featuring Troye Sivan – I’m So Tired (#12) [0; Crap]
I honestly don’t know why we let this make the Year-End list. Lauv has been in music since he gave us the monstrosity that is of I Like Me Better back in 2017. That one had asinine lyrics and weird production that made this an unpleasant listen. Every other single he has released since then has been crap. I’m So Tired is no different. Lauv’s voice is severely DRENCHED in auto-tune. He doesn’t sound good in any other part of the song. Troye did absolutely NOTHING to contribute. He was not a good fit. There’s no chemistry at all and it’s very repetitive. I did my take on this in my post regarding My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019, in which I placed it at #7. Whatever he tried to do here did not work out to my or anyone else’s liking. Everything about this song is a mess from top to bottom. It has no business being here.

39. Katy Perry – Never Really Over (#10) [5; Great]
I’m so glad this song was able to make the Year-End list. I absolutely LOVE Katy Perry because she’s an amazing singer. I enjoyed the majority of her first two albums and a good amount of Prism.  But Witness wasn’t really to my liking outside of Chained To The Rhythm and a few other singles.  This year, she gave us Never Really Over.  It became an instant favorite of mine from the day it was released.  I love her voice as always and she shines in the chorus.  The production is solid and I like the use of the ticking clock, which explains why Zedd helped produced this track.  I also like the lyrics about her relationship towards Orlando Bloom.  She recently got engaged to him, so congrats to her!  This made an appearance in my Top 10 when I counted down my Best Songs Of 2019, where I ranked it at #7.  It’s an awesome comeback for her and I’m interested to see what else she brings in 2020.

38. Shawn Mendes featuring Camila Cabello – Señorita (#3) [5; Great]
This song made an appearance in My Top 10 for my Top 50 Best Songs Of 2019, also.  In fact, I ranked it as my #2 favorite song of the year.  It was released a little over a month after If I Can’t Have You.  When I first heard about the collaboration between Shawn and Camila, I was interested coming in.  After the first listen, it worked out very well to my liking.  They did have another collaboration in the form of I Know What You Did Last Summer a few years back.  But that one didn’t quite held up well on my end.  Señorita, on the other hand, is superior compared to its predecessor.  I really dig the Latin vibe here and Camila sounds pretty good with her voice.  Shawn has a smooth voice and it meshes well with the Latin instrumentation.  They blend together very well in the chorus and they have good chemistry.  Although there’s not a lot in terms of the lyrics, everything else about the song is divine.  This became Shawn’s first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and I’m very pleased about it because the song rocks.  I don’t know if their relationship will last a long time.  But it’s definitely a song that I’ll look back on.

37. Post Malone featuring Swae Lee – Sunflower (#11) [5; Great]
Next, we have another song that made an appearance in my Top 10 when I counted down My Top 50 Best Songs Of 2019.  This time, it comes from both Post Malone and Swae Lee with a song taken from the movie soundtrack of Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse.  Believe it or not, I actually did not like this at first.  I remember putting this in red when it was new.  But things have changed over time.  I like the contribution we get from Swae Lee.  His flow is pretty good and I like how he can hit those high notes.  Post sounds pretty good with his voice as well.  The beat is pretty solid and I like the rest of the production.  This became a #1 on Billboard and it’s a song that I genuinely love unlike his other singles that hit #1 before it.  It’s one of the best Post has had to offer this year.

36. The Chainsmokers featuring Bebe Rexha – Call You Mine (#5) [5; Great]
This wasn’t a huge hit anywhere else, but I’m glad it was successful on Hits 1.  I wasn’t too fond of this from the start.  I thought the production was underwhelming and it reminded me too much of Closer.  That has changed with each and every additional listen.  This song really grew on me a lot.  I talked about this in detail in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, where it landed at #12.  But to recap, I really like Bebe Rexha overall and I think she has a good voice.  She sounds amazing throughout the song and I really enjoy the chorus.  I initially didn’t like the drop, but now I think it’s divine.  Production-wise, it’s similar to both Closer and This Feeling, which I loved overall.  The last drop that comes at the final chorus is just phenomenal.  Yeah, this song rocks.  It’s a shame that it was not as successful elsewhere.  But at least it did well on Hits 1, and I’m happy about that.

35. Jonas Brothers – Cool (#1, 1 Week) [0; Crap]
The Jonas Brothers had a big year in 2019 following their reunion.  I enjoyed quite a bit of what Happiness Begins had to offer and some of their older singles.  But Cool was not a good follow-up to its predecessor.  There’s not a single good thing I can say about this song.  Nick Jonas does not sound good here.  The lyrics are poorly written as well.  They’re essentially bragging about being cool and what not.  Seriously, that kind of personality turns me off.  And there are some lines that I won’t mention don’t make sense at all.  They tried to be cool and edgy with this song and it ended up being a disaster.  Bad vocals, terrible production, and even worse lyrics just make this song an unpleasant listen.  So, I’m not too thrilled that this became a #1 hit on Hits 1.  I’m sure there are better singles that they could’ve chosen off the album.

34. P!NK – Walk Me Home (#3) [5; Great]
I’ve had different opinions when it comes to this song, and I can definitely see why.  It’s different compared to what P!NK has done in the past.  I’ve been a fan of her ever since the start of the millennium.  I did enjoy Walk Me Home overall, though there was a moment in time when I had the song in blue.  But I’ve fully came back around to it.  I like the way it opens up with the beat and P!NK herself sounds good with her voice.  I think her verses flow smoothly and the chorus is nice.  Do I think it’s her best single? Absolutely not.  There are better songs from Hurts 2B Human such as the title track and 90 Days.  But I think Walk Me Home was a solid lead single for the album.

33. Sam Smith featuring Normani – Dancing With A Stranger (#7) [6; Best Song Of The Year]
I’ve been fond of Sam Smith for quite some time.  His breakout hit in the form of Stay With Me back in 2014 was pretty solid and I liked his other singles from The Lonely Hour.  Then in 2017, he made his comeback with Too Good At Goodbyes and I quite liked it as well.  But two years later, we got Dancing With A Stranger, which would go on to be my #1 favorite song of 2019.  I truly think that song is special overall when it comes to Sam Smith.  Everything about the song is just pop perfection.  I remember when this first came out and I saw it was a collaboration with former Fifth Harmony member Normani.  After the very first listen, I was wowed by how it turned out.  I call this Love Lies, part 2.  While I do like that song, I personally think Dancing With A Stranger is a much superior song in every aspect.  First off, I love the way it opens up and I knew from there it would turn out to be a fun listen.  The melody is just awesome and I absolutely love the beat here.  Sam sounds amazing in the first verse.  Then we get a verse from Normani and that’s really when the song becomes even more enjoyable.  Her verse shows that she is the best singer out of all the members of Fifth Harmony.  I love how their vocals blend in the second and final chorus.  They have good chemistry together.  This is Sam’s best single and the best Normani has been a part of so far.  I’m glad this became a massive success worldwide.  These guys did great at impressing me with this song.

32. Panic! At The Disco – Dancing’s Not A Crime (#10) [3; Decent]

Here, we have the first of three songs from Panic! At The Disco to appear on the Year-End countdown.  Hits 1 loves Panic! At The Disco, so it comes as no surprise that they picked up on this song.  I liked this initially mostly because of Brendon Urie alone.  He has an excellent voice and I love the way he can hit the high notes.   I quite like the production here.  But the backing vocals got on my nerves after a while and it kinda had an affect on my thoughts.  I’ve been fond of Panic! At The Disco and there are some good songs from Pray For The Wicked.  But this song didn’t quite held up well.  It’s definitely not a bad song by any means.  However, I much prefer their other singles off the album.

31. Khalid – Talk (#6) [1; Bad]
This song was not a good follow-up to Love Lies and Better, both of which were some of Khalid’s best singles.  I had high hopes coming into the song.  But he did not deliver on those expectations, unfortunately.  I think the lyrics are pretty decent here even though it leaves quite a bit to be desired.  I think he’s a good songwriter.  But everything else didn’t click with me.  The electronic production is not good and it doesn’t fit well with Khalid’s voice.  He doesn’t put on a good performance vocally.  I don’t think he stands out.  Yeah, I was let down by his single and I’m not thrilled that this was his highest-peaking single on Billboard.  Khalid is capable of better as he showed in his previous singles.

30. Ariana Grande – 7 Rings (#4) [0; Crap]
It’s really sad to see just how much Ariana has evolved for the worse.  I really like her and I think she has an amazing voice.  I fell in love with her first two albums and it had some of my favorite songs from her such as Break FreeLove Me HarderProblem, and others.  I adore Into You and I can safely say that it’s easily my favorite single from her.  Then came Sweetener and it did have songs that I liked such as No Tears Left To Cry and Breathin’.  But unfortunately, 7 Rings is a different story.  I still remember listening to this for the first time.  Simply put, I was not impressed with how it turned out.  The production is just awful here.  I hate the trap beat and Ariana’s rapping sucks.  The way she interpolates The Sound Of Music is just terrible.  Combined that with the shitty lyrics that talk about her bragging about being rich and it only makes matters even more asinine.  This is Ariana at her low and it’s the worst single she’s ever released.  This did not deserve to be a fucking #1 hit on Billboard.  This thankfully did miss out on the Top 3 during its run.  But 7 Rings is nothing more than garbage.  Fortunately, not all of her songs are like this…

29. Ariana Grande – Thank U, Next (#5) [4; Good]
The lead single off of Thank U, Next.  I did not enjoy the album overall and I’m very disappointed to have to say that about Ariana Grande.  Despite this, I actually quite like the song and I appreciate what it’s going for.  It’s not her best song overall and I much prefer her older singles where she was actually a great singer.  But everything about the song works well for me in most ways.  The melody is pretty nice and I like her voice throughout the song.  Looking deeper into the lyrics, it’s basically her thanking her ex-boyfriends for everything they’ve done for her.   I like her songwriting here and she was able to put forth the effort here unlike in 7 Rings.  It’s a nice song and I’m kinda glad this was her first ever #1 hit on Billboard.  I’m also thrilled to see this being ranked higher than 7 Rings.

28. Ed Sheeran featuring Khalid – Beautiful People (#1, 1 Week) [5; Great]
I didn’t fall in love with No. 6 Collaborations Project for the most part.  I thought it was a step down compared to Ed Sheeran’s predecessor.  Despite this, I did find a few gems off the album and Beautiful People is one of those gems.  The songwriting is pretty amazing.  It tells a story about not caring about getting material things and what not.  I think it sends a good message overall and it’s nice of them to try and be themselves.  I love Ed’s vocals throughout the song and the way he can hit the high notes in the chorus.  I can easily feel his emotion here.  Khalid’s verse is pretty solid.  I was pretty disappointed that they didn’t blend together in the chorus and they didn’t really have any chemistry.  But I don’t really care because everything else about the song is divine.  This is one of the highlights off the album.  Although BLOW is much better, I can easily picture myself coming back to this song.

27. Alec Benjamin – If We Have Each Other (#3) [2; Mediocre]
Alec isn’t exactly the best singer overall.  I remember finding this song to be pretty decent at first.  But now I don’t quite feel that way anymore.  Whereas Let Me Down Slowly was more interesting musically and lyrically (and we’ll get to that later on), this one doesn’t do anything for me.  The instrumentation is okay, but the rest the production isn’t strong here.  It’s basically just the guitar and the beat with no melody.  That’s about it.  I think the lyrics are okay, but there’s not a whole lot in terms of depth. Alec didn’t fully master his songwriting skills here.  I’ll give it to him that he sounds slightly better vocally.  But good vocals alone won’t exactly cut it.  So yeah, it’s not too interesting and I don’t think I’ll remember this years from now.

26. Billie Eilish – Bad Guy (#10) [5; Great]
Much like with Lizzo, Billie Eilish became a big name throughout the course of the year.  She had three songs that appeared in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, with Bad Guy being one of them.  I think this is the best that she’s had to offer although When The Party’s Over comes pretty close.  I’m very fond of the beat here.  It’s got a nice bass to it and I like the groove.  Billie showcases her unique voice and she reminds me of Lorde.  I like how it transitions to the trap beat.  I think it’s pretty cool.  She did have a remix with Justin Bieber.  It’s pretty good, but I think it defeats the purpose of the song, which is meant to be dark.  I’m cool with this song being her biggest hit and it’s nice to see Billie get some recognition.  She deserves it.

25. Lizzo – Truth Hurts (#2) [5; Great]
Despite this song being released in 2017, Truth Hurts became Lizzo’s biggest hit throughout the course of the year.  I’m perfectly fine with that since it’s a solid song overall.  I much prefer her other single Juice from earlier this year, in large part because the production is better.  But Truth Hurts is enjoyable.  I like her voice here and it has trap elements.  Some of the lines here are pretty funny and I like how she references the Minnesota Vikings.  After all, she is from Minnesota and I didn’t know about this until a few weeks ago.  I’ll bet she’s glad that her team is in the playoffs this year.  I’ll bet she’ll be even happier when these guys win the Super Bowl.  Anyway, I like the song overall and I’m fine with this being her biggest hit.  With Good As Hell still going strong, her momentum is likely going to carry on heading into next year, and I’m cool with that.

24. Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus – Old Town Road (Remix) (#7) [0; Crap]

I’ll go ahead and admit that the song isn’t as bad now as it was when it was new, although that’s largely because worse songs came along during the year and it makes the song look better in comparison.  I still dislike it with great intensity because everything about it is not good.  I’m not fond of Lil Nas X’s voice here.  I just think it’s underwhelming overall.  Billy sounds okay, but he didn’t do a lot to contribute to the remix.  The production is not good.  I don’t like the trap beat and the guitar is grating.  It still bugs me that this was the one to break the record for most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The only reason it was popular was because of the controversy when they decided to put the solo version off the Country Music charts.  I can see why people like this.  But I just can’t get into it.  Sorry.

23. Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie – ME! (#2) [5; Great]
Hits 1 loves all things Panic! At The Disco, and Taylor Swift is one of the biggest start in the world of music.  Putting these two together was a match made in heaven and by no surprise, this became a massive hit.  Granted, this got snubbed from hitting #1 because of the Jonas Brothers’s comeback with Sucker, which had a monster run at the top and would break the Hits 1 record for most weeks at #1.  But regardless, I do think ME! was a good lead single for Taylor’s album.  Sure, some of the lines may be cheesy and all.  But everything else works quite well here.  I like the production overall.  It has a good beat and it’s pretty catchy.  The vocals we get from these guys were divine.  I like how they blend together in the chorus.  They have very good chemistry here.  Overall, it’s a fun, upbeat song that puts a smile on my face.  I enjoyed Lover as a whole and there are some other songs that I love as well.  ME! is certainly something that I’ll revisit from time to time.

22. Dan + Shay – Speechless (#9) [5; Great]
The rise of country duo Dan + Shay in the country genre was one of the highlights throughout 2018 and 2019.  Two of their singles made an appearance in My Top 10 favorite songs of the year.  Tequila came in at #5.  That one was a instant favorite of mine because it had good harmonies, divine vocals, well-written lyrics, and just divine everything.  Here, we have Speechless, which landed at #10.  First off, I love the intro to the song.  The piano sounds amazing and the vocals are pretty divine as well.  Then we get to the chorus and the way they can hit the high notes in the chorus was just beautiful.  While the instrumentation isn’t quite as good as its predecessor, it was still put to good use.  I absolutely adore the lyrics as well.  This turned out to be another good song from the duo.  It shows just how talented these guys are vocally, musically, and lyrically.  This is the perfect song that I highly recommend for a wedding.  I honestly have no other words to describe how amazing the song actually is.

21. MAX featuring Quinn XCII – Love Me Less (#10) [0; Crap]
I talked about this in My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019 where I ranked it as my #3 least favorite song of the year.  But in hindsight, I probably should’ve placed this at #1 just because of how fucking abysmal the song actually is.  And yet Hits 1 held on to it for way too damn long for some reason unbeknownst to me.  Why in the hell did we let this become a hit???  I first heard this song when it debuted and I remember not caring for it very much.  But it got worse with each and every additional listen.  First off, Quinn XCII’s verse is god awful in every sense of the word.  I hate how high pitched he sounds and his flow is no good at all.  That alone is the biggest reason why I dislike the song with a fiery passion.  But even beyond that, the production is absolutely horrific and is all over the place.  MAX sounds pretty bad and the lyrics are badly written.  As much as I dislike Lights Down Low, at least that one I can see the appeal of.  Love Me Less is just a mess all around and I’m pretty damn pissed that Hits 1 held on to it for too long.

20. TWENTY ØNE PILØTS – Chlorine (#11) [4; Good]
My relationship with TWENTY ØNE PILØTS in terms of their music has been pretty good over the years.  2015 and 2016 were the years that I really got into their music, what with Stressed Out becoming a massive hit and their other singles from Blurryface would follow suit.  Then in 2018, they released Trench, which I thought was a solid album overall.  I wasn’t very fond of Chlorine and I remember having it red for most of its tenure.  But that definitely changed over time.  Now, I find it to be pretty interesting.  It’s not the best the album has to offer.  I still prefer songs such as JumpsuitThe Hype, and My Blood.  But I fully appreciate what the song is trying to do.   I think the production is fine and I quite like Tyler’s voice here.  It wasn’t until recently that I decided to look up the lyrics for the song.  Basically, it tells a story about a chemical.  I don’t exactly get the concept to the song here.  But I do think it’s pretty well-written.  Overall, I can safely say that I came around to the song.  Who knows what else they have in store in the future?

19. Anne-Marie – 2002 (#3) [1; Bad]
I first heard this song around the time Friends became a success last year.  That one was just a mess all around with asinine lyrics, terrible vocals from Anne-Marie, and weak production.  2002 isn’t any better.  I actually liked this at first and now I’m not so sure what I was thinking.  Anne-Marie sounds pretty bad with her scratchy vocals.  I liked her performance in Rockabye and Don’t Leave Me Alone.  But here, she doesn’t do well vocally.  The instrumentation is weak overall.  The guitar is just thin and there’s not a whole lot in terms of the production.  I find the lyrics to be uninteresting.  She didn’t put forth the effort in her songwriting.  Sure, it may have references to some of my favorite songs back in the day (Bye Bye Bye by NSYNC, etc.).  But they were not well-executed.  Simply put, this is just bland and not my cup of tea.  If I want something that’s remotely interesting, I’d listen to 1999 by Charli XCX featuring Troye Sivan.  That one does everything it needs to do.  2002 fails in most ways with weak instrumentation, a lack of lyrical depth, and Anne-Marie’s mediocre vocal performance.  Not a recipe for a good song in my book.

18. Ed Sheeran featuring Justin Bieber – I Don’t Care (#5) [2; Mediocre]
Personally, I think this was not a good choice for a lead single off of No. 6 Collaborations Project.  I did like this song at first, but it soured on me relatively quickly.  It’s pretty underwhelming compared to what Ed Sheeran has had before.  I think it’s kinda catchy in some ways.  But for the most part, it’s pretty bland.  The premise to the song is dull and quite uninteresting.  The tropical vibe is okay, but it’s not special.  Neither of the two artist have any sort of chemistry together.  Their verses are okay.  But they don’t really stand out in any part of the song.  So yeah, they didn’t impress me here with this collaboration.  It’s not the worst song as there are some other singles off the album that are worse than this.  But I Don’t Care is just not memorable for me.

17. Imagine Dragons – Bad Liar (#6) [5; Great]
Origins was just not a good album for Imagine Dragons overall.  It showed just how much they’ve evolved for the worse.  You’ve seen me placed Machine at #4 in My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019 post.  But they did redeem themselves with the release of Bad Liar, which I ranked as my #21 favorite song of the year.  It reminds me a lot of Demons.  Dan really showcases his vocal capabilities throughout the song.  I can easily feel the emotion when he sings the chorus.  I like the production overall and while it is minimalistic, it’s not as messy as it was in Machine.  I love the lyrics about Dan going through a divorce, which happened last year.  He is a talented songwriter and it’s further proven when looking at the lyrical content.  This is easily the best the album has to offer and one of the best I’ve heard from these guys in quite some time.

16. Marshmello featuring CHVRCHES – Here With Me (#5) [5; Great]
At the time this song was released, Happier was beginning to die down.  I was not a fan of that one initially.  But I’ve come around to it now.  You’ll see why later on.  Unlike that song, I enjoyed Here With Me right from the start.  I think it’s one of Marshmello’s better songs.  I don’t necessarily care for CHVRCHES’s music.  But I do like Lauren Mayberry’s vocals in this song.  She shows how talented she is as a singer and I like Marshmello’s production work.  It reminds me of Happier in a way.  The lyrics are well-written.  I talked about this one in detail in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, where it landed at #25.  It’s a solid song overall and one of the best Marshmello has had to offer since Wolves.

15. Ellie Goulding featuring Diplo and Swae Lee – Close To Me (#7) [5; Great]
This song barely missed out on making my My Top 10 for the year as I ranked it at #11.  I tried to find room for it in that region and I even considered putting it at #1.  But better songs came along during the year.  Like Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding has been a favorite of mine for much of the decade.  When I first heard Lights back in 2011, I knew she would turn out to be special and sure enough, I was proven right.  Almost every single she has released has impressed me.  Close To Me is no exception even though she has done much better.  I immediately fell in love with the song right from the start.  Ellie sounds amazing as usual and I love the way she can hit those high notes.  That’s one of her strengths when it comes to her vocals.  Diplo’s work was pretty solid here and I like the drop.  We did get a verse from Swae Lee and although Hits 1 edited him out, I think he was a good fit as his flow was smooth.  Simply put, it’s a great comeback single for Ellie and it was nice to see it become another hit for her.  I look forward to her new album coming out next year.

14. Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down (#1, 3 Weeks) [1; Bad]
Honestly, I was expecting more out of Taylor Swift when she released the follow-up to ME!.  I enjoyed Lover as a whole and there are plenty of songs that I genuinely love from the album, including the title track.  But You Need To Calm Down was not one of them and it’s one of the few songs from her that I legitimately disliked.  Basically, it’s an empowerment anthem and I get what it’s going for.  But it not executed very well.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Taylor Swift.  She is a good singer and an even better songwriter overall.  But her vocal performance in the song was not good.  The chorus is annoying, especially when she goes “oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-ohhhhh”.  I don’t really like the beat here.  There is not melody to speak of and the rest of the production is just underwhelming as a whole.  Yeah, I’m not fond of the song overall and I’m not too thrilled that it hit #1 during its tenure.  Taylor is capable of much better.

13. Halsey – Nightmare (#2) [0; Crap]
It’s crazy how much my opinion has changed on the song since it debuted.  I liked this initially in part because I thought it was a step up from Without Me.  Now, I can’t stand it anymore.  I really like Halsey and I think she’s talented.  She has made some good songs and I even ranked Bad At Love as my #6 favorite song of 2018.  But unfortunately, Nightmare is a much different story.  First off, her voice is just abysmal here.  I loathe the way she yells in the chorus.  It is very loud and way too in your face.  Definitely not ideal.  I’m not fond of the lyrics and some of the lines kinda put me off.  I know she is a good songwriter.  But she doesn’t show it here at all.  Halsey tried to go for something different with this song.  But it did not work out very well to my or anyone else’s liking and the results were a disaster.  This is just a mess overall and it’s her worst single she’s released since New Americana.  It’s really sad that I have to say this about Halsey.  This became a success on Hits 1 for some reason, while it flopped elsewhere.  I’m glad this didn’t hit #1 during its tenure.  But this is not the direction she should be taking.  Hopefully, we don’t get anymore songs like this.

12. 5 Seconds Of Summer – Easier (#1, 3 Weeks) [1; Bad]
This one I actually kinda liked from the start.  Initially, I thought it was catchy in a way and I liked the vocals we got from them.  But that kinda got old very quickly and now, I just don’t like it at all.  5 Seconds Of Summer has made quite a few songs I liked over the years.  They did make their comeback last year with Want You Back and Youngblood, both of which were pretty good.  I absolutely loved Jet Black Heart.  It’s one of my favorite songs from the band.  But Easier does not live up to that and it doesn’t come close.  There’s not a lot to like about the song.  There is no band here.  Their vocals aren’t any good and the lyrical content lacks depth in many areas.  The band didn’t put forth a good effort in producing the song.  I know they are capable of better.  This is not the type of song I want to hear from them and it bugs me that it was a #1 hit on the countdown.

11. Alec Benjamin – Let Me Down Slowly (#4) [3; Decent]
This song and I didn’t have a good relationship when it debuted on the countdown.  I wasn’t a huge fan of Alec’s voice and I found it to be uninteresting at the time.  I still kinda dislike his voice somewhat.  But my opinion has kinda changed since it left.  I think the instrumentation is pretty nice and I fully appreciate what the song is going for lyrically.  I think Alec has potential as a songwriter and a musician.  But he didn’t quite put on a strong performance vocally and that kinda affected my thoughts on the song overall.  Despite this, I’ve slowly came around to the song overall, while I find If We Have Each Other to be pretty mediocre.  I’m surprised by the song’s success on Hits 1.  I may not have enjoyed it when it was new.  But now, I think the song is worthwhile.

10. Panic! At The Disco – High Hopes (#1, 8 Weeks in 2018) [5; Great]
This song became a massive hit on Hits 1 in late 2018 and it’s momentum carried on into 2019, in large part because it started to gain popularity elsewhere during that time.  I enjoyed this song from the beginning and it still holds up well today.  Brendon Urie has a good voice and he uses it very well here.  I love the way he can hit those high notes.  The instrumentation sounds really good.  The trumpets were put to good use and everything else production-wise is solid all around.  I love how he tells a story about having goals and being able to reach for the stars.  He is a good songwriter and it shows throughout the song.  I’m very happy that Panic! At The Disco managed to get a hit with this song and I’m glad it was able to reach the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 during its tenure.  Even after spending a long time on the countdown, it’s still a fun and upbeat song with great vocals and great production all throughout.  It was nice to see Brendon Urie and company get some recognition because they’re talented overall.

9. Shawn Mendes – If I Can’t Have You (#1, 9 Weeks) [5; Great]
I’ve been a fan of Shawn Mendes in recent years.  A couple years back, he did give us There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, which was (and still is) a huge favorite of mine.  The next year, he gave us his self-titled album.  I enjoyed quite a lot of what it had to offer.  I think Youth and Lost In Japan are two of the best songs off the album and I enjoyed them both.  If I Can’t Have You is another song I love from Shawn overall.  It bears a striking resemblance of There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back in many ways.  The Latin vibe is really cool and I adore Shawn’s smooth voice.  They both mesh very well together.  In addition, I love the lyrical content.  I think it shows how much better Shawn is getting and how much he has evolved as an artist.  This appeared in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019 where it landed at #16.  I enjoy the song overall and I’m glad Shawn was able to get another hit out of it.

8. Lewis Capaldi – Someone You Loved (#1, 3 Weeks) [0; Crap]
I didn’t envision myself loathing this song and I certainly didn’t see myself placing this at #2 in My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019.  But that’s exactly what happened.  I’m usually a sucker for piano ballads and I’m not so sure why some people dislike them because I think they sound good most of the time.  But hearing this song actually puts me in the shoes of those who legitimately dislike it just because of how bad it truly is.   I don’t get the appeal to the song at all.  Lewis sounds absolutely terrible vocally and the way he hits those high notes just makes me cringe.  I honestly can’t with his voice.  But aside from that, the piano is way too basic and the lyrics have virtually no depth.  Simply put, Someone You Loved has proven to not be a good piano ballad.  It did not deserve to be a sleeper hit and it certainly did not deserve to be #1.  Seriously, this is just terrible and I don’t know what in the hell I was thinking when I said I kinda liked it before.

7. Marshmello featuring BΔSTILLE – Happier (#1, 2 Weeks in 2018) [4; Good]
I’m sure many here are surprised by the fact that I’ve actually like this song now.  I didn’t have a good relationship towards the song when it was brand new.  I thought it was underwhelming when compared to what he had before.  He’s done better with songs such as Ritual and his collaboration with Selena Gomez in Wolves and I’m willing to fight anyone who argues otherwise.  However, following the release of One Thing Right which saw him hit another new low, I started to come around to Happier and now I fully appreciate what it’s going for.  I want to go back to where the story begins.  In 2018, he had a collaboration with Anne-Marie in Friends.  That one was just god awful and it was one of my least favorite songs of that year.  That alone was part of the reason why my initial impression soured on Happier and I could never fully get into the song during its tenure.  Since it left, my opinion has drastically changed.  Sure, Marshmello’s work here production-wise isn’t the best outside of the piano.  But I quite like the vocals from Dan Smith.  He’s a good singer overall and I can feel the emotion when he sings in the bridge.   He showed me how talented he is vocally in the band’s singles such as Pompeii.  It remains as a favorite of mine today.  I like the lyrics about being selfless and leaving a relationship that is failing.  In a way, hearing it makes me feel more emotional than anything else.  Like I said, I didn’t have the best relationship with the song during its popularity.  But I like it now and I’m okay with this being Marshmello’s biggest hit even though he has done better.

6. Ava Max – Sweet But Psycho (#2) [5; Great]
This is the only song in the Top 10 to not hit #1 during its run on the countdown.  I first heard the song back in the Fall of last year and I thought to myself, “Wow, this is fun and catchy!” Ava Max made a good first impression with this song overall.  This made an appearance in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019 where it was ranked as my #4 favorite song of the year.  If I’m being honest, I even thought about putting this at #1 because it is divine in every sense of the word.  Ava has an amazing voice and I love her performance here.  The production is awesome and I love the catchy beat.  I do quite like the lyrics about a girl who is sweet but deranged at the same time.  I find it quite interesting.  Yeah, between Ava’s divine voice and the awesome production, everything about the song is amazing.  She did have So Am I which sounds eerily similar to that song except it has different lyrics.  But I like that song as well and I can consider that an honorable mention.  I’m very happy that Ava was able to get a hit out of the song.  I’m interested in hearing what else she has in store.

5. The Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini – This Feeling (#1, 7 Weeks Total; 3 in 2018, 4 in 2019) [5; Great]
After their first few singles from Sick Boy were not to my liking, The Chainsmokers redeem themselves with the release of Side Effects.  I enjoyed that song overall and thus, it was a step back in the right direction for them.  Then a little over a month later, we get This Feeling.  I’m not too familiar with Kelsea Ballerini’s music.  But I did enjoy her solo singles such as Miss Me More and Homecoming Queen.  She showed me how talented she is as a singer.  Along with Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, and Dan + Shay, she is one of the best acts in the country genre.  I had high hopes coming into the song and they exceeded every single one of my expectations.  It became an instant favorite of mine right from the jump.  First off, I LOVE Keslea’s voice throughout the song.  She absolutely shines in the chorus.  I also liked Andrew Taggart’s voice as well.  I like how they blend together vocally and they have good chemistry.  Then, we get to the drop that comes after the chorus and I found it to be enjoyable.  Andrew and Alex excelled in producing this amazing song.  It’s the best these guys have done since Closer and I’m glad this was a success on Hits 1.

4. Jonas Brothers – Sucker (#1, 13 Weeks) [4; Good]
I’m actually surprised this was not ranked very high, let alone become the #1 song of the year on Hits 1.  It was the Jonas Brothers’s big return to music following their reunion.  It holds the record for the highest debut in the history of the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown (previously held by Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe).  It would eventually go on to break the record for most weeks at #1 with 13.  I quite like this song overall.  I think it’s catchy in a way and Nick Jonas sounds pretty good.  But it’s not much compared to what these guys have done before.  Plus, after hearing the other songs off the album Happiness Begins, it made the song seem a little inferior, at least to me.  It also became a huge favorite worldwide.  I think the only reason the song became a massive success was because “OMG, Jonas Brothers!”  But is the song really that amazing as people make it out to be?  Not really.  But it’s still a nice comeback from these guys after being on hiatus for so long.

3. Halsey – Without Me (#1, 5 Weeks) [3; Decent]
Unlike most music critics and most in the blogging community, I have an unpopular opinion towards this song.  Now, I didn’t have the best relationship at first because I thought it was pretty bad compared to her previous singles.  Things have changed at the beginning of the year as I’ve kinda got into it.  While the lyrics aren’t really the best, I do think everything else about the song is fine.  I like the production in a way and Halsey sounds okay.  But I can do without the auto-tune in the chorus.  It kinda brings the song down a little bit for me.  Despite this, I personally think it’s a fine song and it’s way too over-hated in my opinion.  It’s really songs like Nightmare that I find annoying.  But Halsey has done better in the past with songs such as Bad At LoveStrangers, and her collaboration with The Chainsmokers in Closer.  We’ll see what her new album, Manic has to offer next year.

2. Panic! At The Disco – Hey Look Ma, I Made It (#1, 3 Weeks) [4; Good]
I’m not surprised at all by this song being ranked very high on the Year-End list.  Hits 1 picked up on this single around the time High Hopes was popular.  I figured Hey Look Ma, I Made It would become another hit for Brendon Urie and company, and I was proven to be right.  Clearly, this song is divided among music critics.  I do still hold an unpopular opinion on liking the song.  Brendon shows that he has a good voice overall and I quite like the production here.  The lyrics are nicely written as well.  It reflects on his journey and his struggles he faced to be successful.  I think it’s something we all can relate to.  I’m kinda glad this was another hit for Panic! At The Disco even though there are songs off the album that are better than this.  It’s not that amazing by any means, but it’s something worthwhile and I can picture myself coming back to the song.

1. The Chainsmokers featuring 5 Seconds Of Summer – Who Do You Love (#1, 2 Weeks) [1; Bad]
I have to say. I’m not thrilled by our #1 song of the year on Hits 1.  As someone who’s been quite fond of these guys, it just does not appeal to me.  I liked a good amount of what The Chainsmokers have had to offer over the years. When I heard that they were collaborating with Hits 1’s favorite band, 5 Seconds Of Summer, I had hopes for the song. Sure enough, I did end up liking it. But it didn’t take long for me to realize how flawed the song is. I like the vocals we get from them. But I’m not fond of the drop that comes after the chorus. It is too loud for my tastes. It gets annoying especially after hearing it a lot. The Chainsmokers are a good EDM duo overall.  Back in 2016, they made their breakthrough with songs such as RosesDon’t Let Me Down, and Closer.  I loved those singles.  Who Do You Love is nowhere near their best.  I think the only reason this became #1 is because Hits 1 loves 5 Seconds Of Summer.  But this isn’t worthy of #1 of the year and unlike last year when I fell in love with The Middle, Who Do You Love just didn’t hold up well.  We have much better songs on the Year-End list that should be #1.  I guess it could be worse.  But I’m not pleased with this overall.  Let’s hope for a better #1 next year.

Total Score: 152/225 = 67.5% (C)

I was able to get this done much faster than expected.  This year, the countdown gets a grade of 67.5%, which is a decline from the 76.4% it had from a year ago.  Despite this, I think 2019 was okay overall.  Sure, it did have some lows.  But there were also some highs as well.  Hopefully, things will be better as we begin the new year (as well as the new decade).

Alright, so my work here is officially complete.  As always, let me know what you guys think in the comments below.  I put a lot of time and effort in writing this.  I just want to say thank you for taking the time to read this.  I’m just about done with my Year-End posts.  Up next, I’ll be tallying up the statistics for the year, and then it’s on to the big one: my review for the Billboard Year-End Hot 100.  Hopefully, it won’t take too long.  I do plan on having it out within the next month.  Again, thank you very much for reading.  I hope everyone here has a good week and I wish you all a Happy New Year!  See y’all in 2020!  🙂

Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week: Tones & I – Dance Monkey (–8)

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Ed Sheeran featuring Camila Cabello and Cardi B – South Of The Border (+11)

I Got Blurbs For You
– Dance Monkey’s awful tenure on this countdown continues as it has fallen down to #40 this week.  It’s a unique song that does not deserve to flop on Hits 1.  I’m not sure what’s going on, but hopefully the song can make its comeback soon.

– Not too surprised about South Of The Border having the biggest jump of the week.  It’s a pretty good song overall, but I doubt it’ll last very long seeing that it hasn’t really gained any traction elsewhere.

– Thank goodness the monstrosity that is of One Thing Right is dying out.  You have no idea how pleased I am to see it losing momentum.  Hopefully, the end is near for this song.

– Good to see 10,000 Hours entering the Top 10.  It’s nice to see it gain traction heading into 2020.  Speaking of Justin Bieber, he does have a brand new single that comes out next week.  I’m intrigued to see what he has in store.

– So, the Jonas Brothers are going to perform at an Aerosmith tribute concert, huh?  That’s very interesting.  I do hope they cover I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing, which is my favorite from the band.  I wonder what other songs will these guys be covering?

2019: A Year In Review (Part 3): Halsey – American Top 40 Of 2019

H24Hello, fam! We have reached the end of 2019. The time has come for me to review the American Top 40 of 2019. Every year, Ryan Seacrest counts down the Top 40 songs of any given year. What I’ll be doing here is reviewing every song that has made this list, similar to what I did last year. Each song will be given a ranking from 0 to 5 (and I’ll explain that in just a bit), and I’ll describe as to why said song was given a certain ranking. The number in parentheses denotes the song’s peak position during its countdown run. That covers the first part. Now, I’ll show you the color code that I’ll be using and the number of points for each ranking. Here they are:

  • Red – Crap (0 Points)
  • Turquoise – Bad (1 Point)
  • Yellow – Mediocre (2 Points)
  • Pink – Decent (3 Points)
  • Blue – Good (4 Points)
  • Green – Great (5 Points)

There you have it. In addition, Orange and Purple will remain as the worst and best songs, respectively. For the best song on the list, it’ll be given 6 points instead of 5. Once I’m finished, I’ll be doing a Top 40 Breakdown of all the songs similar to the Top 20 Breakdown that I do every week on the American Top 40, and then I’ll give out my final score in the end. Keep in mind that my reviews are 100% based on my opinions of the songs below. Everyone’s opinions are different, and that’s okay. I respect your opinions on the songs. Okay, I’ve covered everything. Let’s get started!

But first, I’m going to turn back the clock and take a look back at last year’s Top 40. The color code for the Year-End is on the sidebar. You can check it out if needed. Now, here is last year’s Top 40:

2. Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé (#1, 2 Weeks in 2018)
1. New Rules by Dua Lipa (#1, 4 Weeks in 2018)

I was pretty mixed with last year’s Top 40 for the most part. There were some great songs that I loved, but plenty of mediocrity mixed in as well. This wasn’t exactly the best Year-End countdown in terms of overall grade, which was a 68%. How did we fare in 2019? Well, you’ll have to read on and find out. Now, it is my honor to present to you all the Top 40 Songs of 2019 on the American Top 40. Let’s get on with it!

40. Cool by Jonas Brothers (#10) [0; Crap]
The Jonas Brothers have done a lot this past year following their reunion, what with Sucker becoming their biggest hit of their career. I like that song quite a bit and I considered it an honorable mention for 2019. Cool is a different story, however. This is probably my least favorite song they’ve put out this year. There’s nothing about the song that appeals to me at all. I kinda like the guitar here. But Nick Jonas didn’t put on a good performance from a vocal standpoint. I’m also not feeling the lyrics here. They’re basically bragging about being cool (hence the title). I don’t know about you, but this kind of personality drives me off the wall. Also, there are some lines that don’t make sense to me. Take the beginning for example, where Nick Jonas mentions James Dean and Jane Fonda. I’m sure there aren’t a lot of people in today’s youth have heard of these two (except for myself). Their attempt to look and sound cool ultimately did not work out here. Between the underwhelming vocal performance from Nick and the asinine lyrics, everything about the song is just a mess. I liked Happiness Begins for the most part and it has some good singles. But this was not a good follow-up to Sucker.

39. Easier by 5 Seconds Of Summer (#11) [1; Bad]

I remember liking this when it debuted because I thought it was kinda catchy.  That got old real fast.  I’m not sure what I was thinking back then, because with each listen I realized this isn’t any good.  5 Seconds Of Summer has made some good music over the years.  I adore Jet Black Heart with a fiery passion.  That was the song that really got me into their music.  But Easier shows the band going full-on pop in the song and it did not work out very well to my liking.  There’s no band here.  I’m not fond of their vocals and the lyrics leave a lot to be desired.  None of the guys put forth the effort here.  I know they’re capable of better.  It is not worthy of being on the Year-End list and it should never have been a #1 hit on Hits 1.  But of course, it ended up happening that way because Hits 1 loves those guys.  And I don’t blame them.  But this is not the direction they should be taking.

38. This Feeling by The Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini (#8) [5; Great]
In 2018, The Chainsmokers released Sick Boy, which saw them attempt to go in a different direction with their music. I used to like how Andrew Taggart sounded like Tyler Joseph of TWENTY ØNE PILØTS in the title track. But it didn’t take long for me to realize that it was not the way to go. Their latest releases after that were just underwhelming all around and thus, would end up leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Then came Side Effects, which was a step back in the right direction. But not long after that, we get This Feeling, and I fell in love with it immediately upon the first listen.  Right off the bat, this is just amazing.  I adore Kelsea Ballerini overall.  She is incredibly talented. I think she’s one of the best country acts in the genre along with Dan + ShayMaren Morris, and Kacey Musgraves.  I absolutely LOVE her voice throughout the song and the chorus is just phenomenal.  Drew also does well with his vocals and I love how they blend together for the rest of the song.  They have very good chemistry together.  And then we get to the drop, which is just awesome.  Combine that with the final chorus and that’s when the song easily becomes more enjoyable.  This is the best thing Kelsea Ballerini has been a part of and the best thing these guys have done since Closer.

37. Who Do You Love by The Chainsmokers featuring 5 Seconds Of Summer (#9) [1; Bad]
I was hoping this would miss out on making the AT40 Year-End.  But here it is for whatever reason unbeknownst to me.  I actually fell in love with this right from the start.  But after a long while, it started to get annoying.  I do like the intro and the vocals we get from those guys.  I thought they had a nice performance vocals-wise.  But then after the chorus, we get to the drop, which got irritating after hearing it a lot (especially on Hits 1) and thus it killed the song’s potential.  Don’t get me wrong, I like The Chainsmokers and I’ve enjoyed a lot of their music.  But their work here is no good compared to what these guys have done in the past.  This was Hits 1’s #1 song of the year, but not successful everywhere else.  I think the only reason for that is because Hits 1 loves all things 5 Seconds Of Summer, which I don’t mind for the most part.  But Who Do You Love is not something that held up well on my end and I’m not too thrilled that it’s ranked higher than This Feeling.

36. You Need To Calm Down by Taylor Swift (#8) [1; Bad]
This came a little over a month following the release of ME!.  I liked the song overall even though it can be cheesy at times.  I think that one is catchy and I thought Taylor put on a solid performance vocally.  But You Need To Calm Down doesn’t have any of that.  It’s not even catchy in the slightest.  Sure, it’s basically a empowerment anthem and I can appreciate what it’s trying to do.  But it not executed in the best way.  I don’t like her vocals in this one and the chorus is annoying.  The production isn’t that great outside of the okay beat.  There’s no melody and I feel like it’s lacking something.  Don’t get me wrong.  I adore Taylor Swift and I enjoyed a lot of what Lover has had to offer.  But You Need To Calm Down was simply not a good choice for a single.  She can do better.

35. Trampoline by SHAED (#4) [5; Great]
This was featured on a TV commercial last year, which I believe was to promote the Macbook Air (I think).  There are different types of songs that I like to enjoy.  The majority of them are mostly upbeat and fun to dance to.  But sometimes, I like it when a song is more calm.  Trampoline fits into that category.  It’s no secret that I really adore this song.  The mysterious vibe is really cool and I like the creativity the band put together.  Chelsea has a very unique voice and it fits very well with the atmosphere.  The chorus is just divine and I like the whistling that comes in the bridge.  This made an appearance on My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, where I ranked it at #24.  I’m very happy to see SHAED have a sleeper hit.  I’m glad Trampoline was the song that did it for them.  I did recently listened to their other single, Thunder, and I genuinely love that song as well. Trampoline is a highlight of their discography and probably one the best alternative music has had to offer this year.

34. Sicko Mode by Travis Scott featuring Drake (#10) [0; Crap]
I’m sure nobody envisioned me putting this song in my dishonorable mentions when I counted down My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019. Truth is, there were even worse songs that came along during the year and thus, it barely missed out on making my Bottom 10. But it still doesn’t change my opinion on the song whatsoever because everything about it is a mess from top to bottom. The introduction sucks. The way it opens up a song makes me cringe because it is one of the most obnoxious things I’ve ever heard. Combine that with the brittle trap beat and it makes that section not a fun listen at all. Of course, there’s the beat switch that comes after that and it basically just ruins the flow of the song. Travis’s verse is okay, but I hate the vocal effects that come in during the chorus. And then we get to another beat switch and the brittle trap beat, where Drake hardly makes any sort of contribution, if at all. Simply put, this is a terribly constructed track with virtually no cohesion. It did not deserve to be a #1 hit on Billboard at all. But of course it ended up happening anyway, which makes me further question America’s taste in music. And the same can be said for a certain song as well, which I’m fixing to get to eventually. I’ll never see the appeal to the song whatsoever because this blows on so many levels.

33. Be Alright by Dean Lewis (#11) [3; Decent]
Here, we have an acoustic song from a newcomer who makes the Year-End list.  I did grow to enjoy what Dean Lewis had to offer in the song.  But after it’s popularity died out, I’ve kinda stopped caring for it.  Those who dislike the song overall, I can understand why.  Me personally, I think differently.  Dean is a pretty good singer and I quite like his vocal performance here.  But I feel like something is missing here to make the song memorable for me.  There’s really not much in terms of the lyrical depth and I feel like more could’ve been done here.  It’s about a relationship not working out very well and we’ve seen a lot of those.  I’m glad he was able to put forth the effort in his songwriting as opposed to some other artists nowadays.  I think Be Alright is a pretty nice song and I can appreciate what it’s going for.

32. Beautiful (Remix) by Bazzi featuring Camila Cabello (#7) [5; Great]
This song wasn’t successful anywhere else. But it did well on the American Top 40, largely because it had radio traction through most of winter. I did enjoy Mine for the most part and I’m glad that it was a sleeper hit last year. I was interested to see what else he had to offer when he released Cosmic back in 2018. The album turned out to be pretty good and a solid first impression for him. There were some songs that I liked from that album. Beautiful was one of them. But it wasn’t until he released the remix with Camila Cabello and that’s when I started to enjoy it more. Bazzi does have a good voice and he uses it to his potential, and for once Camila doesn’t sound so high pitched when she sings her verse. I like the vocal chemistry between the two. The instrumentation and the harmonies are solid. I think this song is a nice work of art.

31. Only Human by Jonas Brothers (#3) [5; Great]
The story throughout 2019 was the Jonas Brothers reuniting in a big way.  Sucker became the biggest hit and thus its other singles from Happiness Begins would follow suit.  Cool was just a mess with asinine lyrics and bad vocals.  Only Human, on the other hand, is pretty solid.  I like the cool tropical vibe and the instrumentation is good.  Although the lyrics do leave quite a bit to be desired, it’s better written than its predecessor.  Joe and Nick both handled the verses nicely and they put together a solid performance.  I still like the song overall even though it has slightly faded on me just a bit.  There are better singles off of the album for sure, but Only Human is something I enjoyed and I’m fine with this being another hit for these guys.

30. Beautiful People by Ed Sheeran featuring Khalid (#5) [5; Great]
No. 6 Collaborations Project was not that good of an album in my eyes.  It was a step down compared to Ed Sheeran’s predecessor.  But Beautiful People was one of the gems included in the album.  I enjoyed the song from the moment it was released.  I like the lyrics about not being obsessed with material things.  It sends a good message and I really appreciate these guys just being themselves and not caring about what others think.  The production on this track is pretty divine.  I like Ed’s voice here and he shines in the chorus.  We then get a verse from Khalid and does well here.  I also enjoy when Ed sings “That’s not who we are” after the chorus.  I can easily feel his emotion.  It’s a divine song and one of the best his album has to offer, along with BLOW, which is better.

29. Goodbyes by Post Malone featuring Young Thug (#4) [3; Decent]
Following the success of Sunflower and Wow., Post Malone continued to gain steam throughout 2019 as he released his new album in the form of Hollywood’s Bleeding. Initially, I liked this quite a lot in part because it was a step up from Wow.. It still kinda is when comparing the two. But ultimately, it did not stick with me in the big picture. Post sounds pretty good here and I like the chorus. We also get a verse from Young Thug and I thought his contribution was necessary. But he tries way too hard to hit those high notes and thus, it kinda had an affect on my thoughts of the song. Looking back at it, it’s not that special by any means. It’s worthwhile, but not something I’ll actively seek out.

28. Old Town Road (Remix) by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus (#4) [0; Crap]
It’s one thing to having a putrid song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. There have been many occasions in which the songs I loathed have hit #1. One perfect example of that is Panda by Desiigner. Blech. That one just blows big time on all levels. Old Town Road is another good example. In fact, this became a #1 hit. But that was only after the controversy created by Billboard when they decided to put the solo version off the Country Songs chart. Then, he decides to release the remix with Billy Ray Cyrus and everything would change. I remember listening to this for the first time and I was not impressed in the slightest. But of course, this started to get big and it really tested my patience. It broke the record for longest running #1 song in Billboard history, which gives me another reason to seriously question America’s taste in music. Right off the bat, the production is shit.  It lacks substance and I don’t like the fake guitar nor the trap beat.  Lil Nas X’s voice is not good.  Billy did nothing to contribute to the remix.  We’ve had better #1 songs this year and of course, this is the one that broke the record for most weeks at #1.  I’m sure some will say the same about Despacito back in 2017.  But that one I liked overall as opposed to this.  It has no business being #1 of the year on Billboard.

27. Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi (#1, 3 Weeks) [0; Crap]
Why in the hell did we let this become a hit???  I honestly did not envision myself loathing this song, even moreso than Old Town Road.  I actually tried my very best not to hate it because I actually kinda liked it at first.  But it got worse with each and every additional listen and the fact that it was overrated just made it harder and harder and harder until I offically couldn’t stand it anymore.  There’s no doubt that Lewis Capaldi is a terrible singer.  Don’t even bother trying to start an argument with me because it is pretty fucking obvious if you actually listen to the chorus.  I hate the way he hit those high notes.  It makes it sound like he is screaming.  And the bridge before the final chorus is just unbearable.  But even beyond that, the piano is basic as shit and the lyrical depth is shallow as fuck.  I may be a sucker for some piano ballads, but hearing this put me in the shoes of those who were not fond of it all because of how bad this actually really is.  Nothing about this song is any good because Lewis is a awful singer and everything else is basic as shit.  This was way too damn overrated and the fact that it became a #1 hit is just not fucking right.

26. Hey Look Ma, I Made It by Panic! At The Disco (#6) [4; Good]
Brendon Urie has made himself relevant this year following the success of High Hopes. I enjoyed a lot of what Pray For The Wicked had to offer. I still hold the rather unpopular opinion of liking this song, although I don’t love it as much as I did initially when it was brand new. When High Hopes had its time of success, I was waiting on this song to jump right in. Sure enough, it kinda did just that, reaching a peak at #6 here and thus would barely miss out on making the Top 5. Brendon has a good voice, as he showed me in his earlier singles such as I Write Sins, Not Tragedies and the majority of the band’s earlier albums. I like the use of the horns, and the trap hi-hat doesn’t sound too bad either. Looking at the lyrics, it reflects on Brendon’s journey to become a successful artist and the struggles he faced to get there.  I don’t necessarily feel the emotion when I hear him sing.  But he did a fine job with his vocal performance.  I think Hey Look Ma, I Made It is still solid, although I’m starting to see why others think a little differently.  I’m kinda glad this became another hit for Brendon Urie and company.

25. Girls Like You by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B (#1, 5 Weeks in 2018) [2; Mediocre]
I’ve had an interesting relationship towards the song.  I initially didn’t like because it was nothing compared to what these guys had before.  Then, I kinda came around to it with time.  Now, I just don’t really care for it anymore.  Probably the most interesting thing I can say about the song is the music video itself, where it shows many different celebrities.  But other than that, there’s really not much to the song.   Sure, it doesn’t have the strange electronic production like in the majority of their recent singles.  It’s got an okay guitar, and nothing else.  Adam doesn’t put on a strong performance vocally.  Cardi B makes a decent contribution.  But it wasn’t enough for me to make this a fun listen.  I was disappointed by the band’s performance in the Super Bowl this year.  I find it to be underwhelming overall.  But that’s for another topic.  As far as the song itself goes, I can say it’s not worth caring about anymore.  I’m hard-pressed to call it bad.  But Maroon 5 has had better.  With the release of Memories, I don’t have much hope for their new album in 2020.

24. Breathin’ by Ariana Grande (#2) [5; Great]
Ariana Grande was a part of my Worst Songs Of 2019 where I ranked 7 Rings as my #1 least favorite song of the year.  But at the same time, she did make an appearance on My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, where Breathin’ was ranked at #9.  Let’s go back to where the story begins.  Her comeback single in the form of No Tears Left To Cry was one of the highlights in 2018.  Although I was pretty mixed on Sweetener as a whole, there were quite a few songs that I genuinely loved, with Breathin’ being one of them.  I love the well-written lyrics about breathing in order to overcome anxiety.  Ariana is very talented as a songwriter and here, she actually puts it to good use.  Her voice is amazing from the very first line and I knew that it would be a fun listen.  I can easily feel the emotion and the way she breathes is just phenomenal to me.  I absolutely adore the production with dreamy synths and a cool beat.  If I were to rank all of the singles from Sweetener, I’d place this at #1 because everything about it is just special.  I’m glad this was another hit for Ariana even though it’s momentum stalled out following the release of Thank U, Next.

23. Better Now by Post Malone (#1, 2 Weeks in 2018) [5; Great]
This came around following the success of Psycho, which to this day I still dislike with high intensity.  My initial impression for this song was not good because at that time, I was never able to get into Post Malone’s music.  That began to change with each and every additional listen.  My biggest criticism when I heard his earlier singles was that it had virtually no substance and the lyrics were no good.  But in this song, we get to hear what Post is actually capable of.  I quite like his voice and the production is pretty solid.  Hearing this again, I found that the chorus was even better than what I remembered.  He really shines there.  Despite me not being very fond of his singles prior to Better Now, his last album had some good stuff.  I think I can consider Better Now to be one of Post’s best songs, along with Sunflower, which I’ll get to later on.

22. Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored by Ariana Grande (#3) [0; Crap]
I went off on this song in My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019 where this was ranked as my #10 worst song of the year. Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored was a terrible choice for a single off of the mediocre album that is of Thank U, Next and I’m extremely disappointed to have to say this about Ariana Grande. I really like her because she has an amazing voice.  I’m in love with her first two albums, My Everything and Dangerous Woman.  But then we got to Sweetener and it did have good songs such as No Tears Left To Cry (which was my #4 favorite song of 2018) and Breathin’, which I just did my take on.  But Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored is basically Ariana hitting a new low.  While it has a good hook, the trap percussion sounds like shit.  It so annoying and the lyrics are no good.  It just sends bad messages.  Ariana’s voice is okay, but even she can’t save this song from being shit. She attempted to impress me with her single and it did not work out at all to my or anyone else’s liking. I know Ariana is capable of better. This is just a mess. She seriously needs to step up her game.

21. Love Lies by Khalid featuring Normani (#1, 3 Weeks in 2018) [5; Great]
Taken from the Love, Simon movie soundtrack, this song became Khalid’s biggest hit during the course of 2018. I remember the first time hearing the song in its entirety and I was genuinely impressed. If you’ve been following my blog, then you probably know that I disliked his debut single Location in 2017. But I was just a rookie music reviewer back then. I wasn’t thinking at the time. I’ve come around to that song now, and Young, Dumb & Broke is decent as well. It’s really his successor, Talk, that was a disappointment compared to this and Better. This song showed what Khalid is truly capable of. He is a good singer overall. Normani sounds amazing in the song, also. I personally think she’s the best singer out of all the members of Fifth Harmony (with Lauren Jauregui coming in a very close second). I love the chemistry between the two. I’m glad this was a hit. I’m hoping for something more along the lines of this song.

20. If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes (#3) [5; Great]
I think I’m ready to consider Shawn Mendes as my new favorite artist at the moment. He has definitely been getting better following the release of Mercy and There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, the latter still being a huge favorite of mine to this day. If I Can’t Have You is really no different. As a matter of fact, it’s basically a rehash of There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back. It incorporates many of the Latin elements used in that song. I love the instrumentation here and he uses it well. Shawn has a smooth, solid voice throughout the song.  It meshes very well with the Latin vibe.  I did talk about this more in depth in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, where it landed at #16.  Feel free to check it out in case you haven’t already.  But yeah, this was another high for Shawn.  It definitely had a shot at becoming his first ever #1 (which he eventually did with Señorita) if it weren’t for Old Town Road.  #2 is still good enough.

19. Better by Khalid (#4) [5; Great]
After the success of Love Lies, it was an no brainier that Khalid would continue his momentum heading into 2019. I didn’t quite enjoy Better at the first listen. But I came around to it eventually. I like the R&B vibe.  Khalid’s voice meshes well with the atmosphere it brings.  He has vocal talent and he uses it well here.  I think he has come a long way ever since his debut with Location back in 2017.  Better is definitely something I’ll revisit from time to time.

18. Señorita by Shawn Mendes featuring Camila Cabello (#1, 4 Weeks) [5; Great]
My #2 favorite song of 2019.  I remember when this song first came around and it was around the time that rumors began to spread when Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello were dating. It was proven to be true for most of the summer when I read the news about it. When I heard this for the first time, I was genuinely impressed with how it turned out for the most part. They did give us I Know What You Did Last Summer a few years ago and I kinda liked that song. But it didn’t really stick with me in the long run. As for Señorita, I think it has held up well for me because I find it much more interesting than their previous collaboration. It shows how much Shawn Mendes has been improving with time. I did enjoy his self-titled album for the most part unlike Illuminate, which was loathed by many to this day thanks in large part to him coming off as whiny guy. But following the release of Mercy, he has been getting better with each release. The Latin vibe is really cool and definitely suits Shawn well, as evidenced in songs such as There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back which still remains as my favorite single from him. Camila isn’t exactly my favorite singer, but I loved what she bought to the table the chorus and they proved that they have good chemistry together. Looking into the song, it basically tells a story about getting deeper into a relationship. My point is further proven when I read some of the lines in the lyrics. Sure, it’s meaningless and all.  But everything else here works well to perfection.  I’m very pleased with how successful this song was and I’m glad this helped Shawn get his first ever #1 hit.

17. Youngblood by 5 Seconds Of Summer (#1, 3 Weeks in 2018) [5; Great]
The band getting their biggest hit in the form of Youngblood was not something I envisioned in 2018.  They were coming off of their comeback single in the form of Want You Back and I was waiting to see what else they had in store at the time.  Then came Youngblood, and it became a hit not only on Hits 1.  But it had success elsewhere, too.  Youngblood grew on me with more listens and now I can safely say it’s one of their best singles.  Sure, it may not hit as hard as Jet Black Heart, which remains as my favorite song from these guys.  But Youngblood is cool and something different.  I like the thumping beat and they guys sound good in the chorus.  And the line “I’m just a dead man walking tonight” pulls me in.  Looking back on this song, even after it got a little stale, I’m happy that this was the song that helped them get the recognition these guys deserve.

16. Close To Me by Ellie Goulding featuring Diplo and Swae Lee (#2) [5; Great]
Ellie Goulding’s comeback single was more successful than I thought it was going to be.  She has always been a huge favorite of mine. From the day she bought me Lights and it became a sleeper hit back in 2012, I knew that she would turn out to be something special. And sure enough, I was proven right. She has never disappointed me with her music. Almost every single release has been a pop masterpiece. Songs such as Lights, Burn, Love Me Like You Do, and Something In The Way You Move are easily my favorites from her. Even though Close To Me does not top all of those, it is still a really good song in my book.  Ellie sounds amazing with her voice as usual.  I like the verse we get from Swae Lee as well.  Diplo excels with the production work.  I gave praise to this song in My Top 50 Songs of 2019, where I ranked it at #11. This definitely had a shot at making My Top 10  and I even considered putting it at #1 as it was a huge favorite of mine for much of the year. But competition was stiff this year and thus, it would barely miss out on making the Top 10.  In spite of this, Close To Me was a good comeback for Ellie Goulding.  I honestly look forward to her new album in 2020.

15. Truth Hurts by Lizzo (#1, 4 Weeks) [5; Great]
On the note of other artists having sleeper hits, we have Lizzo with Truth Hurts. If you had told me a song released in 2017 would get big two years later, people would look at me and think I’m crazy. At the beginning of the year, she gave us Juice, which I fell in love with and I ranked it in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019. I did love Truth Hurts initially, but not as much as her predecessor. I much prefer Juice from a production standpoint, but this is still pretty solid. Lizzo sounds pretty good here. But unlike Juice where it has a throwback vibe to it, Truth Hurts has trap elements. I do kinda like some of the lines that I won’t mention right now. I’m kinda happy that this was a success and helped put Lizzo on the map even though I prefer her other singles, such as Juice and Good As Hell.

14. Bad Guy by Billie Eilish (#1, 3 Weeks) [5; Great]
I know quite a few people here who dislike the majority of Billie Eilish’s music, in large part because of her voice alone. And that’s okay. But I’m not among that crowd who thinks that way. I hold an 100% unpopular opinion in the blogging community when it comes to her music. She had three songs which made My Top 50 Best Songs Of 2019, Bad Guy being one of them. I did like Bury A Friend and When The Party’s Over. But I think Bad Guy tops all of them. I definitely like the beat here and Billie shows her dark and unique voice. She kinda reminds me of Lorde in a way. I love the ending to the song as well. She did release a remix with Justin Bieber, which I’ll admit was good. But I didn’t think his contribution was necessary as it defeats the purpose of the song, which is meant to be dark and edgy. This is Billie’s best song. I’m interested to see what she has in store.

13. 7 Rings by Ariana Grande (#1, 5 Weeks) [0; Crap]
I could go on all day about just how much Ariana has systemically changed for the worse. The more I hear this mess of a song, the more I ask myself, “What happened?” I did a epic rant on this one when I counted down My Bottom 10 Songs of 2019 and this was my #1 least favorite song of the year. I reallylike her ever since she’s been relevant back in 2014. She made a good first impression with the singles from My Everything and almost every single she has released since has impressed me. I did a Top 10 post regarding her favorite songs during the summer and Into You will always be my #1 favorite song from her. I fell in love with it. But 7 Rings is a much different story. I’ll never get the critical acclaim nor do I understand the appeal. She’s had so many better songs. This is shit. She’s basically bragging about having material things and what not.  There is not a single good thing I can say about the lyrics.  It sends bad messages and every aspect of the songwriting is just a mess.  Whoever thought it was a good idea to brag about wanting stuff?  Certainly, not me.  And we haven’t even gotten to the other aspects of this messy song.  Nowhere does Ariana sound good.  She has a good voice, but here she does not use it at all.  Her attempt at rapping sucks and how she interpolates The Sound Of Music really only makes matters more asinine.  Couple with the shitty trap beat and it easily makes this an unpleasant listen for me.  This is the bottom falling out in Ariana’s music and one of the worst I’ve heard this decade.  I’ll stick to her first two albums and some of Sweetener, where she was actually a good singer.

12. Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande (#1, 1 Week) [4; Good]
Thank U, Next was simply not a good album in my eyes. In fact, I just finished talking about 7 Rings.  It basically showed just how much Ariana has evolved for the worse, which is sad for me to say considering she is talented, probably one of my favorite singers throughout the whole decade.  Despite this, the lead single off the album, Thank U, Next, was actually pretty good.  I liked it when it was new.  But it’s nothing compared to the greatness Ariana has had in the past.  It’s catchy in a way, the melody is nice, Ariana sounds fine, and I appreciate what the song is going for.  It tells a story about her thanking her ex-boyfriends and being grateful for all they’ve done for her.  Her songwriting got me here and I can feel it.  This was her first ever #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, which I’m fine with even though she’s had better.  Even though I didn’t enjoy the album overall, it had some good songs like BloodlineBad Idea, and Ghostin.  Thank U, Next is a nice song and a hell of a lot better than 7 Rings.

11. Sweet But Psycho by Ava Max (#3) [5; Great]
Oh, lookie here!   We have another new artist making a good first impression.  This time, it’s from Ava Max herself with this catchy song.  From the day I first took a listen to this song, I remember thinking, “This is amazing. I hope it does become a hit”. Sure enough, it ended up doing just that, peaking at #3 on the American Top 40 and barely made it to the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 at #10. It made an appearance on My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, where I ranked it at #4. However, I strongly considered putting this at #1 at one point in time while working on my Best Of The Year list. But it ended up not happening that way as tougher decisions had to be made and thus, it would barely miss out on making my Top 3 for the year. In spite of this, everything about the song is pretty divine. It has a good beat and Ava sounds great. For a long time, I had to figure out what the song is about. Basically, it tells a story about a girl who has a sweet personality, but at the same time is deranged. She also followed up with So Am I, which was similar to this song except it had different lyrics. But I consider that as an honorable mention because I love that song as well. Yeah, this was definitely a win for Ava in my book. I’m interested to see what else she has to offer in the future. I’m glad this is ranked higher than 7 Rings on this Year-End countdown and it deserved to hit #1. But #3 is still really good and I’m proud of her.

10. Talk by Khalid (#1, 3 Weeks) [1; Bad]
Coming off his two best singles in Love Lies and Better, I was expecting more out of Khalid with the release of Talk.  But I was disappointed with what the song had to offer.  I remember finding this one to be a little underwhelming and now I’m just not fond of it.  The lyrics aren’t too bad necessarily.  But everything else just didn’t work out well.  I don’t like the strange electronic production.  It doesn’t fit Khalid very well as he is more suited to R&B, which is his strength.  Khalid is talented and I like his voice.  But he doesn’t put on a good performance vocally.  I didn’t hear any part of the song where he stands out.  This was not a good single overall and I’m not very thrilled that this was hig biggest hit, especially since he has had better (no pun intended).

9. I Don’t Care by Ed Sheeran featuring Justin Bieber (#1, 2 Weeks) [2; Mediocre]
The big comeback from Ed Sheeran this year was not exactly what I was hoping for. I liked his music for the most part and he showed me how incredibly talented he is in songs like Castle On The Hill, The A Team, Perfect, and a few others I won’t mention. But I Don’t Care doesn’t come close to those. It’s more of what I would say, a song that’s more bland than bad. Sure, it may be catchy. But I don’t really see anything that makes it memorable in the long run. There’s not a whole lot of chemistry between the two artists. Bieber’s presence is okay, but I’m not sold on his vocal performance. This song, while be catchy, lacks substance in some areas and both artists didn’t do much here. The only reason it got big was because of star power. After all, Ed and Justin are two of the biggest names in music. But this collaboration didn’t wow me there.

8. Wow. by Post Malone (#1, 1 Week) [1; Bad]
I’ve finally come around to Post Malone as an artist. But that doesn’t mean he has stopped releasing mediocre songs. Wow. serves as another reminder of how I’m still pretty mixed on his music as a whole. For starters, the production here is lifeless. There’s really nothing about it that makes it stand out. And some of the lyrics leave quite a bit to be desired. Post sounds decent here, but that’s really the only saving grace of a not very good song. I’ll give it to him that it’s better than his previous singles prior to Better Now. Yeah, I just couldn’t get into this for some reason and I’m not thrilled that it was a #1 hit on the American Top 40 over Sunflower, which is his best song. I think Post Malone still has potential, but the song doesn’t exactly do it for me.

7. Sunflower by Post Malone featuring Swae Lee (#4) [5; Great]
Speaking of Sunflower, this was the only song in the Top 10 to not hit #1 during its tenure on the AT40.  I didn’t envision myself putting this song on my Best Of The Year list, especially after not being fond of Post Malone’s earlier singles.  That began to change at the beginning of the year when I started to grow into that song and it would eventually land a spot on My Top 50 Songs Of 2019 at #8.  Feel free to check out my review in case you haven’t already. I think Post is quite talented. He didn’t really show me in his previous singles. But here, he uses it to his full potential.  I also like how Swae Lee opens up the song.  His verse is solid and he’s good at hitting those high notes. The production and the beat both sound good as well.  I haven’t watch Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse as of yet, but I’m glad these guys picked a good song to put on their soundtrack.

6. Happier by Marshmello featuring BΔSTILLE (#1, 5 Weeks) [4; Good]
I know this may seem like I grew to like this song all of a sudden. I was not a big fan of this at first and I much preferred his older singles such as Wolves and Ritual. As I’ve referenced many times, Marshmello has done better with these songs in the past and I still stand by that. However, after he hit another new low this year with the release of One Thing Right, I’ve finally started to come around to this song and I fully appreciate what it’s going for. Let’s go back to where it all began. His biggest hit of 2018, Friends was just a mess and was one of my least favorite songs of last year. Thus, it soured my initial impression on this song and during its tenure, I was never able to get into it. But after it had left, I started to listen to the song more often and it made me realize that the song is better than what I remembered. Sure, the drop is underwhelming at times, but I like the piano work. Dan Smith put on a good vocal performance here and I can feel the emotion. He proves that he is a good singer overall. I like BΔSTILLE as a whole when it comes to their music. They did have Pompeii, which was a favorite of mine back in 2014 and it holds up well even today. Dan is the big reason why I enjoyed that song, as well as most of their music. When looking at the lyrics to the song, it basically talks about one being in a relationship that is failing and to be happy, the said lover must leave them. Hearing this again makes me feel emotional more than anything else, hence why I was finally able to get into this song. Like I just referenced, this isn’t Marshmello’s best and I prefer his two singles. I may not have the best relationship with this song when it was new. But I’m kinda glad this was his biggest hit of his career so far.

5. Dancing With A Stranger by Sam Smith featuring Normani (#1, 1 Week) [6; Best Song Of The Year]
For the second year in a row, my #1 favorite song of the year lands a spot in the Top 5. This time it comes from the collaboration between Sam Smith and Normani. I remember when I first heard of Sam Smith back when he made a breakthrough with Stay With Me in 2014, along with some other singles from The Lonely Hour and I enjoyed them quite a bit. A couple years ago, he did make his comeback with Too Good At Goodbyes and Pray, both of which I liked as well. But I had no idea what was coming until we got Dancing With A Stranger at the beginning of the year. After the very first listen, I found that song to be something special. Dancing With A Stranger is just pop perfection in every sense of the word. In his first two albums, he was mostly doing piano ballads and what not. That was his strength and he put his talent to good use. But never in my wildest dreams did I envision him making a special song like this. Of course, he needed just a little bit of help doing so by teaming up with former Fifth Harmony member Normani. First off, the song has a awesome melody and a good beat. I love the intro to the song and things would only get better from there. Sam has a good voice and he really showcases his vocal talent. It pulls me in every time I listen to it. But then, we get the verse from Normani and wow, did she deliver big time. Her voice is honestly just amazing. In fact, I can safely say that Normani is the best singer out of all the members of Fifth Harmony. I love how they blend together in the chorus. I can easily feel the chemistry between those two. This is Sam at his best and it’s easily the best thing Normani has been a part of. I am very happy that the song was successful everywhere. It hit #1 on the American Top 40 and made the Top 5 on the Year-End countdown. Well done Sam Smith and Normani. You guys really gave me something memorable that I’ll look back on for a long time.

4. Sucker by Jonas Brothers (#1, 8 Weeks) [4; Good]
Ah yes, the big return of the Jonas Brothers. It was a decade ago that these guys were relevant during their time on Disney. They made some good music back then and fell in love with Burnin’ Up, which was one of their biggest hits at the time. Fast-forward to 2019 and these guys decided to finally reunite in order to make new music. Sucker made history on Hits 1 as it made its highest debut ever (at #7) and would eventually go on to break the record for most weeks at #1 (with 13). The same didn’t exactly ring true on the American Top 40. But it did quickly rose to #1 within a month and would spend 8 weeks at the top. Coming into the song, I wasn’t really expecting much given that it’s been a while since I’ve heard from them. But I was genuinely impressed with the way it turned out. I definitely like the song. But it’s really not much compared to what they’ve done in the past. I kinda like the introduction and the song gets better from here. It’s pretty catchy and I like their vocal performance. These guys haven’t really lost a step vocally.  I did listen to Happiness Begins and there were some other good songs, such as Only Human which I just talked about earlier.  Do I think Sucker is amazing? Not quite. But it’s a good comeback for them. I’m okay with this being their biggest hit.

3. High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco (#1, 4 Weeks) [5; Great]
From the day Hits 1 picked up on the song, I never envisioned High Hopes would later become a major hit for Brendon Urie and company. I assumed this would only get big on Hits 1 because they love all things Panic! At The Disco. After all, they did hit #1 with Victorious and Say Amen (Saturday Night) in 2016 and 2018, respectively, despite those songs not being popular elsewhere.  But in a shocking turn of events, it gain more traction elsewhere late in the year and thus, it would end up surpassing the peak I Write Sins, Not Tragedies on the Billboard Hot 100.  It’s a fun, upbeat song that puts me in a good mood.  I love Brendon’s voice and how he can hit those high notes.  The trumpets sound really good.  It’s loud and was put to good use here.  I really like the lyrics about have high hopes (hence the title) and becoming successful.  I still enjoy the song overall despite Hits 1 picking up too early and gaining steam after a while.  Brendon Urie has really come a long way and I’m proud of him having a massive hit.  Him and the band deserve it.

2. Eastside by Benny Blanco featuring Halsey and Khalid (#1, 3 Weeks) [5; Great]
Benny Blanco has actually been in the music industry for a while.  He’s the guy who had a hand in producing some of my favorite songs of the decade, which I’m not going to mention right now.  So him collaborating with two good artists (Halsey and Khalid) is a match made in heaven.  The two acts each have had different paths of success.  Halsey has established herself as an artist following the success of Closer and Bad At Love, while Khalid was just a rising star at the time.  Putting those two together was a recipe for making a song that I enjoyed for much of the year.  The verses we get from them are solid and they have good chemistry together.  Benny did pretty well with his work production-wise.  He was able to put forth the effort here.  I like what the song brings to the table lyrically.  It’s another that talks about being in a relationship.  I can feel the emotion when I hear Khalid sing.  It pulls me in.  I’m glad this was a success and I’m fine with it being #2 of the year.

1. Without Me by Halsey (#1, 4 Weeks) [3; Decent]
Personally, I think this song is way too over-hated. Granted, I didn’t have a good relationship towards the song either when it was new, in part because I thought it was pretty bad compared to what Halsey had in the past.  Then I kinda came around to it somehow.  This came around following the breakup between G-Eazy and HalseyI’ll admit, the lyrics aren’t the best here.  The production gets me there and that’s part of the reason why I feel this way.   Halsey sounds fine, even though she didn’t put on the best performance vocally in part because her voice is auto-tuned in the chorus.  Even though I hold the unpopular opinion on Without Me being a fine song, I don’t think it’s that worthy of being #1 of the year.  There are better #1 songs that are worthy of the top spot.  I think the only reason this became #1 of the year because, “OMG, Halsey!”  But the song really isn’t that amazing nor is it anything special.  I feel like it’s just another song to me.  I’ll give it to her that it’s a hell of a lot better than Nightmare.  That one is actually annoying and I’m glad it flopped.  But Halsey has done better and none of her other singles ever got this much success like Without Me did.  I guess people see things differently, which is fine.  I just wish this song wasn’t that big of a success because I’ll likely won’t remember this in the long run.

Whew, that was a lot of work!  Those were my reviews of all the songs on the American Top 40 Of 2019.  But wait!  I’m not finished yet.  I’m going to be doing a Top 40 Breakdown, very similar to the Top 20 Breakdown that I do each and every week I review the AT40.  With that, here are my rankings for all of the songs based on my opinion.

And now, my work here is officially complete.  Last year, my grade was a 68% when I did my take on the Year-End for 2018.  This year, it gets a grade of 64.5%, which is a slight decline from last year.  But it wasn’t too bad overall.  As always, let me know what you guys think.  I’ve put a lot of heart into writing this.  I hope to do it again next year as we start the new decade.  Who knows?  Maybe things will be better in 2020.  Up next, I’ll be compiling stats and some other stuff, and then my focus will shift to the Hits 1 Year-End Countdown.  I hope to get those out soon.  Thank you all for reading!  I hope everyone here has a good day!  🙂

#1 Song This Week One Year Ago: The Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini – This Feeling (2nd of 7 Weeks At #1)

Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week: Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down (–5)

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Panic! At The Disco – Into The Unknown (+11)

New Entrants:
– To start things off on what is likely going to be the final round of debuts for the year, we have more of Lil Nas X who has become a big name throughout 2019.  He gives us his latest single in the form of Panini.  We all know that he had his first huge hit in the form of Old Town Road, which spent a record breaking 19 weeks at #1.  I wasn’t a fan of that song personally.  I think Panini is only a bit of a step up from its predecessor.  It’s been growing on me quite a bit.  I kinda like the production here, but I’m not too wild on Lil Nas X’s performance here.  I don’t think he’s that good of a singer.  That’s just me, though.  I can see myself growing into this in the near future unlike Old Town Road.

– Following that, we have the return of OneRepublic not long after Rescue Me left the countdown.  This time, they bring us Wanted.  I liked Rescue Me for the most part because I thought it was catchy and I liked the groove.  Wanted doesn’t really have any of those to make it enjoyable for me.  Ryan Tedder’s voice is okay, but he doesn’t really shine in any part of the song.  The production is pretty underwhelming, especially for a band that has made some good music in the past.  I don’t think it’s bad overall.  But it wasn’t something I was hoping for ultimately.

– Next is more of Ed Sheeran, and he collaborates with Camila Cabello and Cardi B in their latest single titled South Of The Border.  I was a little indifferent on what No 6. Collaborations Project had to offer as a whole.  Sure, there are some good songs.  But it’s nowhere near as memorable as his singles from his last album.  As far as South Of The Border goes, I like this one quite a bit.  There may not be much to the production and the beat as it is minimalistic.  But I like the verses we get from these guys.  Ed has a good voice and he uses it well here.  It’s nice to hear Camila not trying too hard to hit those high notes.  Cardi’s contribution to the song is pretty solid.  Yeah, I’m fine with this sticking around for a while.

– I’ve been waiting for the return of Dua Lipa for some time now.  My wish is granted as this week, she brings us her new single called Don’t Start Now.  She had a big year in 2018, what with New Rules becoming her breakout hit and her other singles following suit.  She looks to do it again as we draw closer to the new year.  After hearing the song in its entirety, I was genuinely impressed overall.  This is how you make a comeback.  I really like the production here.  It has a nice groove to it and I love the build-up leading to the chorus.  Dua sounds great here.  She hasn’t lost a step vocally and it shows how much she continues to evolve for the better.  I also like the lyrical content about leaving a relationship that’s not going so well.  I’m in love with this.  I’m hoping it can be successful.

Best Debut Of The Week: Dua Lipa – Don’t Start Now

Blurbs Of The Border
– We say goodbye to four songs this week, including two from Harry Styles.  With Adore You gaining steam, it was really only a matter of time until those two songs would leave.  Good riddance to both Look At Her Now and I’m Lonely.  The former was annoying vocally and the latter was simply underwhelming.  Good thing those two didn’t last very long.

– The Top 10 remains the same other than a few songs moving spots, so nothing really to talk about here.

– It looks like Who Do You Love’s tenure is slowly coming to a close as this is the lowest it’s has been since its debut.  I’m ready for this song to start leaving soon.  It has no business being in the Top 20 at this moment.  I’m sure this will be ranked very high on the Hits 1 Year-End Countdown.

– With how much I heard Adore You all this week, I thought for sure it would be taking a massive jump.  But that wasn’t the case.  Seems like the winter freeze really is in full effect.  I don’t think we’re going to be getting any significant moves until next month.

– We did, however, see Into The Unknown getting its Biggest Jump Of The Week, which actually comes as no surprise because of course, Hits 1 still loves Panic! At The Disco.  I’m cool with this song sticking around for a while.

– NF – Time also appears to be on the decline as well.  I have been losing interest in that song, though I can’t really see myself putting this in red the same way I did with Who Do You Love.

Entrant Reviews:
– We have four new songs debuting on Hit-Bound this week as well as four from last week that I didn’t get a chance to review.  So, I’ll start with last week’s debuts first.  We’ll kick things off with more of Halsey as she gears up for the release of her new album, Manic, next month.  Her new single is titled Finally // Beautiful Stranger.  I do quite like the instrumentation in this song and Halsey sounds nice.  But it’s not that interesting overall.  We’ll see what else her new album will bring.

– Lewis Capaldi replaced himself last week with his latest single in the form of Before You Go.  I think this one is a lot more interesting than two of his other singles.  It’s got a good instrumentation and Lewis sounds slightly better here.  We’ll see if it ends up debuting on the countdown soon.

– Next, we have the collaboration between AJ Mitchell and Ava Max with Slow Dance.  This one has been around for a while, so Hits 1 was a little late to the party on picking it up.  There’s not a whole lot going on in terms of the production.  I feel like it’s missing something.  They sound good vocally, but they don’t really shine in the chorus and I don’t quite feel the chemistry between the two.  It’s okay, but not something I’ll revisit in a year or two.

– Niall Horan has another new single in its stead.  It’s titled Put A Little Love On Me.  I think this is a nice piano ballad.  His voice fits very well and the piano sounds good.  The lyrics are well-written.  While it’s not as good as Nice To Meet Ya, I can find myself enjoying this at times.

– Now onto this week’s debuts.  We have more of Lizzo with her latest single titled Cuz I Love You.  Out of all the singles off her new album, I can’t believe this is the one she chose.  Lizzo has been a favorite of mine and I loved the majority of her music.  But I’m not feeling this song.  It is just overwhelming and not in a good way.  This is probably the first song I’ve legitimately disliked from her.

– Up next is the return of Zedd, and he teams up with Kehlani in their new single called Good Thing.  For some reason, I couldn’t quite get into this like I was able to fall in love with his previous singles.  Kehlani sounds okay, but the production is a little weak and it doesn’t quite hit hard.  It’s lacking something to make it stand out.  Overall, I’m not quite feeling this.  Zedd has had better.

– After that, we get a new band in the form of X Lovers with their new single Play Your Game.  I really dig this song overall.  The production is very solid and I like their vocals quite a bit.  I’ll talk more about this should it debut.

– I wasn’t quite ready to hear more from Alec Benjamin soon.  But alas, here he is with another single titled Mind Is A Prison.  Once more, I’m not too fond of Alec’s voice.  But I think the production is the most interesting thing I can say about the song overall.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Steve Aoki featuring BTS – Waste It On Me: I like Steve Aoki, but he’s done better.  Although the vocals are fine, I’m not feeling the production work he’s done and that kinda brings the song down for me.

Mark Ronson featuring Miley Cyrus – Nothing Breaks Like A Heart: The guy behind one of my favorite songs of all time did a fine job of creating this pop masterpiece.  Everything in this song works well to perfection here.

James Arthur – Empty Space: I kinda liked Say You Won’t Let Go even though most will disagree.  But I can’t say that about Empty Space.  The instrumentation is weird and out of place, and James doesn’t put on good performance here.

Ellie Goulding featuring Diplo and Swae Lee – Close To Me: Ah, yes.  The big return of Ellie Goulding.  Sure, it may not top the greatness she had in her previous singles.  But this is still a really good song in my book.  Ellie impressed me yet again with this one.

2019: A Year In Review (Part 2): My Top 50 Songs Of 2019

Hello, fam! So with 2019 coming to a close, it is now time for me to begin counting down some of my favorite songs of the year. The consensus around the blogging community is that 2019 was deemed to be the worst year for music. But I personally don’t see it that way. While it was not a good year by any means, it was far from the worst. But it did have Old Town Road breaking the record for the longest-running #1 song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. I’m sure some people here in the blogging community would like to forget that. It didn’t help that many of the popular songs (regardless of quality) were overplayed and what not, hence why some here called 2019 the worst. And I often talk about how overplay should never be a primary factor when it comes to being a music critic. I’ll admit there were a few instances in which radio overplay affected my thoughts on the songs. However, there are other things that need to be taken into account as well. But I’m going to stop right there for now because I’m going off-topic. I also feel like it’s just not worth discussing anymore at this moment. Right now, I’m going to put all of that aside and just simply get to the matter at hand.

2019 was really not that different compared to previous years as far as the quality of music goes. You just saw me count down my Bottom 10 Songs of 2019 in my previous Year-End post. Now, I will count down my Top 50 favorite songs of the year. This is where I’ll share my positive reviews on these songs. There were some songs that I didn’t exactly like at first, but I eventually came around to them during the course of the year. There were others that I enjoyed right from the start and were able to stick with me for a long time. That’s what I’ll be talking about here as I thoroughly go through all of them. Now with that, I am ready to begin. But there are rules and eligibility requirements that each song has to go through in order to make the list. So, let’s talk about those first.

1) A song must spend at least one week on either countdown (Hits 1 Weekend Countdown, American Top 40, or both). This does not include the ones that made it exclusively to the Billboard Hot 100.

2) Any song from Hits 1 that was on Hit-Bound or YouTube 15, but never graduated to the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown is not eligible to be on the list. The only exception to the rule is if it had spent at least one week on the American Top 40, as I mentioned above.

3) Songs that debuted in late November or December on either countdown are not eligible to be on this list. The reason being is because I wanted to avoid ranking them prematurely as some of these songs may end up getting bigger in 2020. The only exceptions to the rule are if it had spent only one week on either countdown or if it had left before December. Otherwise, they will be saved for my 2020 rankings.

Those are the rules and eligibility requirements that I just mentioned. Because of those said rules, I want to mention several songs that were unable to make its debut in time and will be in consideration for my 2020 rankings. Here are the list of songs below:

  • Arizona Zervas – Roxanne
  • Harry Styles – Adore You
  • Harry Styles – Lights Up
  • Harry Styles – Watermelon Sugar
  • Hot Chelle Rae – I Hate (Love) LA
  • Sofi Tukker – Purple Hat
  • Travis Scott – Highest In The Room

Don’t get me wrong. There are some of those I fell in love with instantly. But not all of them are going to appear in my rankings. There will be more music as 2020 goes along. We’ll just see how the whole year plays out. Now, I’ve put together my honorable mentions for 2019. Those were songs that I loved, but were not good enough to make my final Top 50. So, here are my honorable mentions:

  • AJ Mitchell – All My Friends
  • Ariana Grande – Thank U, Next
  • Ava Max – So Am I
  • Avril Lavigne featuring Nicki Minaj – Dumb Blonde
  • Camila Cabello – Consequences
  • Cardi B featuring Bruno Mars – Please Me
  • David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie – Don’t Leave Me Alone
  • DJ Khaled featuring SZA – Just Us
  • Dominic Fike – 3 Nights
  • Halsey – Graveyard
  • Jonas Brothers – Only Human
  • Jonas Brothers – Sucker
  • Khalid – Better
  • Lauren Jauregui – Expectations
  • Lukas Graham – Love Someone
  • Lizzo – Truth Hurts
  • Mabel – Don’t Call Me Up
  • Mark Ronson featuring Camila Cabello – Find U Again
  • Marshmello featuring BΔSTILLE – Happier
  • OneRepublic – Rescue Me
  • Panic! At The Disco – Hey Look Ma, I Made It
  • P!NK – Hustle
  • P!NK – Walk Me Home
  • PUBLIC – Make You Mine
  • Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie – ME!
  • Thomas Rhett – Look What God Gave Her
  • TWENTY ØNE PILØTS – Chlorine
  • Waterparks – Dream Boy
  • Why Don’t We – 8 Letters
  • Zara Larsson – Ruin My Life

There are quite a few songs that I enjoyed from the beginning. But I just didn’t have enough room to place them this year.  Oh well, what can you do? Now, the last thing I’m going to do is turn back the clock and review my Top 10 favorite songs for last year.

10. Dua Lipa – New Rules
9. Taylor Swift – Delicate
8. Bruno Mars featuring Cardi B – Finesse (Remix)
7. Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé – Perfect
6. Halsey – Bad At Love
5. Camila Cabello featuring Young Thug – Havana
4. Ariana Grande – No Tears Left To Cry
3. Hailee Steinfeld & Alesso featuring Florida Georgia Line and Watt – Let Me Go
2. Selena Gomez featuring Marshmello – Wolves
1. Zedd featuring Maren Morris and Grey – The Middle

Okay, so I’ve covered pretty much everything here. I am now ready to get started. But just a fair warning before I go. The songs you’re about to see on my list are 100% based on my opinion. They stood out to me the most this year, for entirely different reasons which will be stated below. Not everyone here is going to agree with my list, and that’s okay. We all have different opinions on these songs. Are you ready, everyone? Let’s go through my Top 50 favorite songs of 2019!

LLB
50.
Loud Luxury featuring Brando – Body
Kicking things off is the EDM duo Loud Luxury with a song that was released in 2017 but caught on late in 2018 and early 2019. I didn’t exactly cared for this one at first. But it kinda grew on me over time.  I’m quite fond of Brando’s voice here.  The production work that Loud Luxury did was solid overall.  The build-up leading the drop is pretty good and I like the drop itself.  It has some kind of bass to it and I’m a sucker for those.  I find myself dancing to this at times.  I think these guys did a fine job here.

RO11
49.
Rita Ora – Let You Love Me
I’m not familiar with the majority of what Rita Ora has to offer, in part because she has been irrelevant in the US.  She does have success on the charts overseas with some songs.  I fell in love with Let You Love Me right from the beginning.  I think the production is pretty solid and I like the vibe here.  Rita has a good voice and she uses it to her full potential here.  I love the chorus and the way she can hit those high notes.  In addition, I like the drop after the chorus.  Overall, I’m in love with this song.  It’s too bad Rita Ora isn’t getting the success she deserves, especially in the US.  But Let You Love Me is something I’ll revisit from time to time.

LMX1
48. Little Mix featuring Nicki Minaj – Woman Like Me
It was 2015, and when I was driving to work one day, I came across Little Mix and their single Black Magic. I fell in love with that song and thus, it was what got me into liking Little Mix. It’s too bad that they didn’t really have much chart success after that. A couple years back, they did have Shout Out To My Ex and Touch, both songs which I thought were divine. Unfortunately, neither of them graduated from Hit-Bound. This year, they finally made it back to the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown with this song. And it took a collaboration with Nicki Minaj to be able to do that. Woman Like Me has that reggae production that pulls me in. These girls sound good here and I like Nicki’s verse. She showed me that she is still a good rapper for the most part. I find this song to be pretty divine and definitely something I can dance to. I do wish it had more success elsewhere, because I think Little Mix are a really good girl group.

AG39
47. Ariana Grande featuring Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey – Don’t Call Me Angel
Taken from the Charlie’s Angels movie soundtrack, we have an interesting collaboration between Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey. Coming into the song, I haven’t been very kind as to what Ariana has had to offer this year. In my previous Year-End post, you saw me place 7 Rings as my #1 least favorite song of the year. But in spite of this, I still really like Ariana Grande. I had hopes that the song would turn out to be good. And after hearing this in its entirety, she really redeemed herself. I quite like the production here and the beat sounds good. I love the way it opens up because we get to hear Ariana’s amazing voice. She showed that she is still talented vocally. I like the chorus where she shines. In addition, the verses we get from Miley and Lana are solid. Actually, I can say that Lana’s verse is the best part about the song. The way she showcases her sultry voice just wows me. This interesting collaboration was just divine. It may not have been a success because by that time, people were getting tired of Ariana. But I can definitely picture myself coming back to this.

DL11
46. Dua Lipa – Swan Song
Taken from Alita: Battle Angel movie soundtrack, we have Dua Lipa landing a spot in My Best Of The Year list for the second consecutive year. In 2018, Dua Lipa became a big name following the success of New Rules. I fell in love with that song, as well as the majority of her debut album. Swan Song is another really good song that showcases her unique vocal abilities. I love the way she can hit those high notes. The beat is really good as well and the rest of the production is just amazing. Yeah, I’m in love with this even though it doesn’t quite live up to her previous singles.

ZKP1
45. Zedd featuring Katy Perry – 365
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked what Zedd has had to offer in recent years (save for a few songs that I won’t mention). As a matter of fact, he was a part of My Top 50 Songs Of 2018 with both The Middle and Happy Now, the former which was my #1 favorite song of that year. This year, he gave us a collaboration with quite possibly one of my favorite artists of the decade: Katy Perry. Right off the bat, the song is pretty divine. Zedd put some effort into the production and I quite like the ticking clock, even though it is overused. Katy sounds pretty good as usual. She doesn’t particularly shine in the chorus, but she did a fine job with her vocal performance. It didn’t quite get as big as The Middle, mostly because it wasn’t used in TV commercials. But I do like the song overall.

MIL7
44. Miley Cyrus – Mother’s Daughter
Two years ago, Miley Cyrus made her comeback in the form of Malibu. I didn’t totally love that song like some others do, thought that one was pretty decent. She was coming off her last album with Bangerz, which I was indifferent on overall. Despite this, I think Miley is talented. Mother’s Daughter is quite solid. I like the production in a way and the beat sounds pretty good. Miley put on a nice vocal performance here. I also like the lyrics here. She shows how great she is at songwriting. Overall, I’m in love with this. It’s the first song I legitimately loved from her since Wrecking Ball.

MT2
43. Meghan Trainor – All The Ways
Meghan Trainor is not an artist that people love. I’m sure that people remember her for her 2016 hit Me Too, which is among the most hated songs among YouTube critics. But let’s not get into that. I want to talk about some of her latest music. In 2018, she made her comeback with No Excuses, which I was a little indifferent on. A couple months after that, she gave us Let You Be Right, which I thought was an improvement. I ranked it as my #28 favorite song of 2018. Here she is again landing a spot in my Best Of The Year list much to the dismay of many here, with All The Ways. I think Meghan sounds good throughout the whole song. The chorus is pretty divine. The instrumentation is put to good use (especially the guitar) and I really like the beat. This is probably one of the best Meghan has had to offer and unlike With You and Wave, I can definitely see myself coming back to this song.

FLE2
42. FLETCHER – Undrunk
Here, we have a newcomer who made a good first impression this year. It came around early in the year when it was trending on the YouTube 15. The song was pretty good at the first listen, but it grew on me quite a lot. I find FLETCHER to be a good singer. She showcases her vocal talent in this song and I quite like the lyrics. It tells a story about wanting to get out of a relationship with someone who breaks your heart. The songwriting and her singing showed me that FLETCHER has potential. But it’s the production and the beat that really pulls me in. In a way, it sort of reminds me of Rachel Platten – Fight Song. It did start to gain momentum early on and I thought it would be a sleeper hit. But that ended up not being the case, unfortunately. In spite of this, I think FLETCHER did an fine job with this track. I’m interested to see what else she has in store in the future.

CI1
41. Ciara – Thinkin’ Bout You
I didn’t envision Ciara making her return in 2019. But I’m kinda glad she did. Thinkin’ Bout You is a really good comeback for her after a while. I quite liked some of her music such as 1, 2 Step with Missy Elliot. That’s what introduced me to Ciara, I believe. When I first heard about her return, I had hopes that her single would meet my expectations and she didn’t disappoint. Sure, it may be repetitive at times. But I love pretty much everything about the song. I like the groove and the beat. Ciara sounds good with her voice and it shows she hasn’t lost a step. I don’t have much else to say beyond that. It’s an enjoyable song with a summery vibe.

JL2
40. Jennifer Lopez – Limitless
Taken from the Second Act movie soundtrack, we have Jennifer Lopez making an appearance on My Top 50 Songs Of 2019. We all know that Jennifer Lopez is an actress, and she’s been really good at it for a long time. But she is also a very good singer. I remember back when she first broke through the music scene with If You Had My Love back in 1999. That one was a huge favorite of mine. In fact, she has quite a lot of songs that I enjoyed, although she did give us Dinero last year which was not to my liking. But Limitless is a really good song. First off, I love her voice. The first verse is just amazing and I love how it transitions from the pre-chorus to the actual chorus, where she absolutely shines. The production and the beat are on point. I love how it opens up with the piano and from there, the rest of the production kicks in. The way she transitions from the bridge to the final chorus really pulls me in. What the song talks about is not giving up. I love the creativity in the lyrics. Even though it didn’t really take off, I’m glad she released it as a single.

Billie Eilish – When The Party’s Over
Here, we have Billie Eilish with the first of three songs appearing on my Best Of The Year list. Unlike some in the blogging community, I have been fond of what Billie has had to offer. She has a unique and mysterious voice that pulls me in. In a way, she reminds me of Lorde. I fell in love with the song since day one and nothing has changed. Although there’s not much to the song outside of the piano, Billie really puts her unique voice to her full potential. I like the humming in the chorus and her verses are good.  I’ve listened to her album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and I enjoyed it.  When The Party’s Over is one of many highlights off the album.

Billie Eilish – Bury A Friend
Following that, we have Billie Eilish with her second straight appearance on my Best Of The Year list.  I think this was one of the songs that introduced me to her music.  I’ll simply say that I like the minimalistic beat and the dark vibe is pretty cool.  Billie puts her unique voice to her full potential.  It fits very well with the production and I like the part where the guy says her name after the chorus.  Yeah, this is another highlight off of Billie’s discography and I’m glad it was a success elsewhere.

Billie Eilish – Bad Guy
Oh, lookie here! We have Billie Eilish yet again, this time with her biggest hit in the form of Bad Guy. After falling in love with both Bury A Friend and When The Party’s Over, she decides to follow-up with this song. Like in her first two singles, she put her unique voice to good use. But what sets it apart from her previous two is the production itself. There’s a lot more to it. I like the groove here and the beat is catchy. I also like how it transitions into the trap beat in the end. She did release the remix of the song with Justin Bieber, which isn’t quite as good as the original. This became a #1 hit following the massive success of Old Town Road, which spent 19 record-breaking weeks at #1. I’m glad Billie got the recognition she deserves. I think she is talented and I’m sure her momentum will continue heading into 2020.

Khalid featuring Normani – Love Lies
I know this was a hit from 2018. But since it carried on into 2019, I kinda had to include it. This was taken from the Love, Simon movie soundtrack. The two artists who collaborated with each other in the song both have interesting paths of their own. Khalid was a name to watch in music in recent years. I first heard of him back when he debuted with Location. Believe it or not, I actually did not like it at first. But overtime, I came around to it. Normani was a member of Fifth Harmony over the years and I thought she was pretty good during her time. When these two got together to do this song, I was genuinely impressed with the way it turned out. I quite like the lyrical content here. It’s well-written and the depth is pretty solid. Both Khalid and Normani sound good here and they have very good chemistry together. I love the chorus and the R&B vibe is just great. I’m glad this was the song that helped get Khalid the recognition he needed. I’ll remember this as one of Khalid’s best songs.

Kygo featuring Whitney Houston – Higher Love
Kygo lands a spot on my Best Songs Of The Year list for the third year in a row, this time around he collaborates with the late Whitney Houston with a posthumous release in the form of Higher Love. I’ve been a fan of Kygo ever since he gave us It Ain’t Me back in 2017, which I ranked #4 in My Top 50 Songs Of 2017. I’m happy that it was the song that helped him get a huge hit that year. He did release some songs this year in the form of Think About You and Carry On. But neither of them graduated Hit-Bound. However, I’m glad Higher Love started to gain traction late in the year even though it deserved much better than what it ultimately got. He uses Whitney’s vocals from her cover of the song that was originally sung by Steven Winwood. Kygo’s production work in the song is just awesome. I really like his creativity here, and it’s show how good he is as an EDM artist. The chopped-up vocals from Whitney are divine. Everything works very well here and it’s nice to see an EDM artist of his caliber be able to create this amazing song.

Normani – Motivation
I originally planned on saving this for my Best Of The Year list for next year because I thought it was going to gain momentum heading into 2020. But that did not work out very well as it ended up flopping and thus, it caused me to have a slight change of plans. I consider Normani to be the best singer out of all the members of Fifth Harmony and this song is proof that she is indeed talented. First off, I just want to say that the music video for this song was pretty cool. It had that throwback feel.  At the first listen, I didn’t exactly cared for it. But it slowly started to get better with each and every additional listen.  The production here is pretty cool and I like the beat.  Normani put on a good performance vocally, which is further proof as to why she is indeed the best singer from the group.  I really like the lyrics about keeping somebody “motivated”, hence the song title.  Yeah, Normani did well with her first solo single.  I wish it was a bigger hit, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

TWENTY ØNE PILØTS – The Hype
Last year, music duo TWENTY ØNE PILØTS gave us their latest album in the form of Trench.  I was a huge fan of their lead single, Jumpsuit, which I ranked #17 on My Top 50 Songs Of 2018.  I enjoyed quite a lot of what the album has had to offer.  It was nice to have these guys back.  Sitting at #33 this year is The Hype, and boy did this song live up to it.  The instrumentation is pretty solid and I like the melody.  Tyler did well vocally with his performance.  I like the chorus and his verses.  The lyrics are well-written.  I like how he tells a story about going through a difficult time and making it through those tough times.  I’m sure we can all relate.  The Hype is one of many highlights off of the divine album that is of Trench.

32. Olly Murs featuring Snoop Dogg – Moves
The return of Olly Murs was something I didn’t quite envision in late 2018. I’m quite familiar with some of his music. In fact, He did have some songs that were trending on the YouTube 15, such as Unpredictable, which I thought was really good. Prior to that, he did have a huge hit in the form of Troublemaker, which I liked. This year, he gave us something groovy I could dance to. I really like the disco feel to the song. It reminds me of Bruno Mars’s singles such as Treasure. Olly has a smooth voice that meshes well with the disco vibe. I thought Snoop Dogg made a good contribution. It was a nice comeback for Olly Murs. It definitely deserved better.

31. Martin Garrix featuring Macklemore and Patrick Stump – Summer Days
It was a few years ago when I first listened to In The Name Of Love with Bebe Rexha and I thought to myself, “Wow, what an amazing song!” That was the song that really got me into Martin Garrix as an EDM artist. Fast forward to 2019, and he gave me something worth remembering during the summer. He had a little help with Macklemore and Patrick Stump (the former who was a part of my Best Songs of 2018 with Good Old Days, which I ranked at #11). Summer Days definitely lived up to my expectations of what a summer song should sound like. Patrick and Macklemore both did well with their verses and I like the chorus. But it’s really Martin that ultimately got me falling in love with the song. He shows his talent as an EDM producer with the solid groove, excellent guitar riff, and a cool drop. It’s a nice song that has a summer feel to it. I think Martin Garrix deserves more success that what he is getting ultimately.

30. Ed Sheeran featuring Khalid – Beautiful People
Following a triumphant year in 2017, Ed Sheeran looked to do it all over again in 2019 with the release of No. 6 Collaborations Project. I was a little indifferent towards the album. I Don’t Care was kinda meh and Cross Me was not very good. But it did have some good songs. One was BLOW, which had a rock vibe. The other is Beautiful People, which lands a spot on my Best Of The Year list. It tells a story about being yourself and not really caring for material things. This is something that we can all relate to. As for the rest of the song, the production is pretty solid and I love the beat here. Ed and Khalid both sound good and I like their verses. Sure, there may not be much chemistry. But their vocal performance, coupled with top-notch production work, makes this a fun listen for me. I’m glad it became a success as it hit #1 on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. It also did really well elsewhere and I’m happy about that. Ed gave me something that I enjoyed off of No. 6 Collaborations Project. Like I just mentioned, I’m pretty split on the album as a whole. But this is a great song overall. Hopefully, these guys team up again someday.

BTS featuring Halsey – Boy With Luv
I remember disliking this when it first dropped. But now, I’m looking back on it and thinking, “what was I thinking?” Granted, I’ve been pretty mixed on K-Pop as a whole and I didn’t really get what the hype was about. BTS has had some mediocre songs, such as Mic Drop, which was one of my least favorite songs of last year. But after hearing some of their music lately, I find that they are actually quite talented. Boy With Luv is one of those songs that showed me their potential. I quite like the production here and the beat is interesting. The chorus pulls me in. Although Halsey sings only a few lines, she was a nice addition. I know I didn’t think that way when it was new. But my opinions have drastically changed since it left the charts. Yeah, BTS finally managed to impress me with this song. I’m interested to see what else they give us.

28. Daddy Yankee featuring Katy Perry and Snow – Con Calma (Remix)
Daddy Yankee was a part of one of 2017’s biggest hits, Despacito, which tied for the most weeks at #1 at the time. Katy Perry has been a favorite of mine for much of the decade. Putting these two together was definitely a match made in heaven. It goes without saying that this isn’t quite as good as Daddy Yankee’s earlier singles. But it is still enjoyable nonetheless. I’ve always been a sucker for Latin-based music and this is no exception. The production just pulls me in. I like the cool vibe here and the beat drop sounds pretty good. I like the verses we get from all of these guys. I don’t have much else to say. It’s a solid song and I’m glad it had some minor success.

27. Zara Larsson – All The Time
I remember when Zara Larsson came out with Never Forget You back in 2016 and I thought to myself, “this is really good”. She made a good first impression with that song and I’m glad it was a hit in the US.  The next year, she did a collaboration with Clean Bandit in Symphony and it was absolutely amazing.  In 2019, she gave us a comeback in the form of Ruin My Life. Despite that song barely missing out on making the list, I genuinely liked that song for the most part. But All The Time is actually a step up from that.  First off, I really like the groove here and the production is just on point.  Zara sounds divine all throughout the song, especially in the chorus.  In addition, we get computerized backing vocals, which I thought was pretty cool.  Overall, I’m in love with this song.  This is just a gem.  Zara has impressed me yet again.

Lizzo – Juice
Sitting at #26 on my best list, we have Lizzo, who became a big name in the second half of 2019 following the success of Truth Hurts. I remember when this first dropped at the beginning of the year and I quite liked it. The song had slowly been getting better with each and every additional listen. Right off the bat, this is definitely a fun retro jam. I love the disco feel the song has. It reminds me a lot of the late 70’s and early 80’s disco songs that I listened to a lot back in the day. Lizzo is a good singer, as she showed me in most of her discography. She has the type of voice that fits well for a song like this with a throwback feel. It’s some good stuff! As much as I liked Truth Hurts and Good As Hell, I find this to be even superior.

MC7
25. Marshmello featuring CHVRCHES – Here With Me
Last year, Marshmello gave me a collaboration with Selena Gomez in the form of Wolves, which I ranked as my #2 favorite song of 2018. That song showed me that he was talented. But in his latest singles, such as Friends and One Thing Right, he doesn’t showcase his talent there. However, I did like Here With Me from the day it was released. If you’ve been following my blog since last year, you’ve probably seen me put Happier in red, mostly because I thought it was another low for him. But things have changed drastically since then, and believe it or not, I’ve actually grown into that song now. So, I do kinda have my regrets. I’ll explain why in another Year-End post. But right now, I want to talk about Here With Me. I’m not familiar of CHVRCHES when it comes to their discography. But I do think Lauren Mayberry is a good singer. I like her voice in this song. Marshmello did a nice job with the production overall. He was able to put forth the effort in that department, as opposed to some of his other singles where he got lazy and didn’t do much at all. The drop reminds me a little bit of Happier. But I don’t mind at all because it’s a great song. It’s a shame that it didn’t get treated as such. At least it was successful on Hits 1 and I’m fine with that.

24. SHAED – Trampoline
On the note of alternative music, we have SHAED making a good first impression with Trampoline. I remember first hearing this song on a TV commercial some time late last year while I was watching football. Then it started to catch on in 2019 and that was when I grew into the song more. The musical trio consists of Chelsea Lee and brothers Max and Spencer Ernst.  First off, the mysterious vibe is pretty cool.  I like the creativity these guys did in terms of the production.  Chelsea showed me that she is a great singer.  Her voice is very unique in every way.  She shines in the chorus and I adore her verses.  She definitely has potential to be even more.  Simply put, this song rocks.  They did have some other cool stuff like Thunder, which I like as well.  I think Trampoline is a highlight of their discography.  I’m looking forward to whatever else they give us.

23. Stephen Puth – Sexual Vibe
Charlie Puth’s brother, Stephen, made his entrance in the world of music with this song. Around the time Charlie decided not to release anymore singles from Voicenotes, his brother, Stephen decided that it was time for him to shine, and boy he did. Chart-wise, he didn’t make much of an impact because not much was known about him at the time, other than the fact that this is Charlie’s brother. Regardless, it’s a damn good song. Well, I didn’t think that way initially. I remember having it in blue when it was on Hit-Bound. But upon deeper listen, I really grew into it. I love how Stephen is able to showcase his baritone voice. It sounds very unique and that’s what sets him apart from his brother. While I think Charlie is a better singer than him, he has the potential to be just as good, maybe better. The instrumentation is rock solid and I definitely like the beat. His deep voice, coupled with the production, meshes well with the vibe of the song. Overall, Stephen made a good first impression. Hopefully, we’ll get something more along the lines of this.

22. Charli XCX featuring Troye Sivan – 1999
I remember Charli XCX mostly for her breakthrough hit in 2014 in the form of Boom Clap. But ever since then, she hasn’t really been relevant. This year, however, she decided to turn back the clock and take us to 1999 with this song. It’s basically a better version Anne-Marie – 2002, which did not stick with me. Whereas 2002 lacked in most areas to make it interesting, 1999 improves on all aspects. Charli sounds pretty good here and I like Troye’s contribution here. His smooth voice fits well in the song. They have good chemistry together. It has references to songs such as Britney Spears – …Baby One More Time, as well as movies like Titanic. Every time I watch the music video, I get flashbacks of the pop culture that I grew up with back in the day. The 1990’s will forever hold a special place in my heart. I’m in love with the song and I’m glad that Charli and Troye gave me a upbeat song that I’ll revisit in the years to come.

21. Imagine Dragons – Bad Liar
This is the second year in a row in which the Imagine Dragons are placed at #21 on my best list. This time, it’s in the form of Bad Liar. In my previous Year-End post, they have been a part of my Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019 where I placed Machine at #4. That one was just a mess all around with obnoxious guitars and unnecessary yelling from Dan Reynolds. It was easily my least favorite song I’ve heard from them and my least favorite song off of Origins, which was not a good album for the most part, maybe even worse than Evolve. But let’s not get into that. I much rather talk about the superior single from that album. The song bears a resemblance to Demons in terms of how it sounds, which I genuinely loved. Dan is an excellent singer and he shows it throughout the entire song as opposed to Machine, where he didn’t sound good with the obnoxious yelling. I like the production and the beat here. Looking deeper into the song, it tells a nice story about Dan going through a divorce with his wife, which actually took place last year. I can easily feel that emotion in the chorus. Overall, it’s the best song off of Origins and it’s definitely something that I’ll revisit from time to time.

20. Kelsea Ballerini – Miss Me More
Kelsea Ballerini has been relevant in the country genre since the early part of the decade. I’m not familiar with most of her music given that I’ve only listened to a few of her solo singles. But she is a really good singer overall. Miss Me More is just divine in every sense of the word. I love the way it opens up with the cool beat and Kelsea’s amazing voice. It only gets better from there when we hear her sing the chorus. She put on an exceptional performance. I also like the lyrics about being independent. It sends a good message. I think it shows how talented she is as a songwriter. Yeah, it’s a catchy song with a divine chorus and awesome instrumentation. Kelsea has wowed me with this solo single.

BHK112.jpg
19. Benny Blanco featuring Halsey and Khalid – Eastside
This collaboration kinda came out of nowhere last year and it eventually became a massive success on the charts in 2019. Two of these artists (Halsey and Khalid) all have good songs of their own prior to that. Halsey has some amazing songs in the form of Bad At Love and Closer (with The Chainsmokers). Khalid impressed me with singles such as Love Lies and Better, both of which I just talked about. Putting these two together was a recipe for me liking this one. I felt that way since day one and nothing has changed. I adore the verses of both Halsey and Khalid. These guys did well vocally and I feel the emotion. They have good chemistry there. And Benny Blanco made a good first impression with his production work. I like the guitar here and the vibe is pretty cool. I would argue it’s his best single thus far and I applaud Benny for doing a fine job here. I’m happy this was a success.

18. Mark Ronson featuring Miley Cyrus – Nothing Breaks Like A Heart
When I think of Mark Ronson, I often think of the epicness that is of Uptown Funk, which remains to this day a huge favorite of mine from 2015. This year, he made his comeback and he decided to team up with Miley Cyrus to create this single. I’m familiar with most of Miley Cyrus’s music. She is a good singer overall and her performance in Nothing Breaks Like A Heart really proves my point. She sounds amazing from the very first line all the way to the end. The chorus is just divine. But it’s really the production and the instrumentation that pulls me in. I absolutely adore the guitar. Mark Ronson really worked his magic here. Every he does production-wise was put to great use here. He showed me how much he has evolved as a DJ overall. Yeah, everything about the song works well to perfection. Well done, Mark. You managed to wow me yet again.

17. Jennifer Lopez featuring French Montana – Medicine
Jennifer Lopez makes her second appearance in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, this time teaming up with French Montana in the form of Medicine. A couple years back, French Montana had his breakout hit with Unforgettable, which as the title suggests was…well unforgettable (see what I did there). I thought that one was pretty cool and I do find myself revisiting the song every now and then. I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into this song, and when I first listened to it, I was impressed. Sure, I don’t quite like the lyrics. But everything else works well here. Jennifer shows how talented she is as a singer. She sounds good in the chorus. The production is solid and I like the catchy beat. I love the way it opens up because it makes me want to dance. French Montana put on a fine performance when he sings his verse. Yeah, she redeemed herself this year with her two singles after Dinero wasn’t to my liking last year. I’m glad she is still making music. And I definitely look forward to her performance in Super Bowl LIV. I’m sure she’ll do amazing.

Shawn Mendes – If I Can’t Have You
I’ve been fond of what Shawn Mendes has had to offer in recent years. In 2017, he did have songs such as Mercy and There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, both of which I enjoyed overall and I often revisit those songs. Then came his self-titled album last year and it was full of good singles. I liked songs such as In My Blood, Lost In Japan, and Youth, the latter being the best song off the album. Sitting at #16 is If I Can’t Have You. I remember hearing the song for the first time when it was released and I was wowed overall. It reminds me a lot of There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.  It has that cool Latin vibe that pulls me in.  I really like the instrumentation and the beat is enjoyable.  Shawn does well with his smooth vocals.  The lyrics are well-written as well and it shows how much he has evolved for the better.  I’m glad it was a huge success and were it not for Old Town Road hogging the top spot, this would’ve been his first-ever #1 hit on Billboard.  But #2 is good enough, and I’m okay with that.

15. Maren Morris – GIRL
Maren Morris, along with Keslea Ballerini and Kacey Musgraves, are some of the best country acts in the genre at this moment. 80’s Mercedes was the first song I’ve heard from Maren while I was trying to surf the web and discover new music at that time. That song was a favorite of mine and it got me into liking her music. Her first album, Hero, was impressive as there were plenty of songs that I enjoyed (except for one). Last year, she was a part of my #1 favorite song of 2018 when she collaborated with Zedd in The Middle. Those who have been following my blog should know how much I adore that song. I still enjoy it to this day. Now for the second year in a row, she has landed a spot in My Top 50 Songs of 2019. This time, with her lead single GIRL from the title album. I immediately fell in love with the song when it first dropped and nothing has changed. Basically, it’s a self-empowerment anthem that talks about one’s struggles and being able to overcome them. I really like the lyrical content here and the message that it sends. Maren’s voice is just divine all throughout the song. She shines in the chorus. The instrumentation sounds really good and I adore the beat.  Yeah, this is honestly an amazing single overall.  I listened to the entirety of her latest album and there are some other good songs, such as Common.  GIRL is a highlight off her album and I’ll definitely be revisiting that song again.  Someday, I plan on doing my Top 10 favorite songs from her.  That would be a lot of fun.

Rogers & Cowan Hosts Special In-Office Performance With Lauren Daigle
14. Lauren Daigle – You Say
Although we didn’t get new music from Adele this year, we did however get music from someone who sounds eerily similar to her in the form of a Christian singer named Lauren Daigle. When I first listened to the song, I was genuinely blown away. Right off the bat, Lauren has such an amazing voice. I love the way she can sing. Here, I can feel her emotion when she sings the chorus. The piano is just divine and I like the rest of the production. The song gets better once we hit the final chorus. I was wowed by her performance. While I know there are some who dislike this, I’m definitely not among that crowd. Lauren made a very good first impression with this song. I enjoyed her album overall and it has some other songs that I love. I’m looking forward to whatever else she brings us.

13. Avril Lavigne – Tell Me’s Its Over
The return of Avril Lavigne was something I didn’t envision last year. But it was well worth the wait. I’ve been a fan of Avril Lavigne back in the 2000’s when she had songs such as Girlfriend, Complicated, and some other singles. She made her comeback when she released Head Above Water. I thought that one was amazing. But Tell Me It’s Over is just as good, maybe even better. She sounds amazing throughout the entire song. I love her voice in the bridge and how she transitions to the final chorus really gave me the chills. It shows that she hasn’t lost a step vocally. The production is just awesome and I adore the instrumentation. Looking at the lyrics, it tells a story about getting out of a relationship. I love the creativity she put in the songwriting. I can feel the emotion. Having listened to the entirety of Head Above Water, I was wowed by how much Avril continued to evolve vocally, lyrically, and musically. I’m glad she made a comeback and it’s nice to see her make music again after so long.

12. The Chainsmokers featuring Bebe Rexha – Call You Mine
For the second year in a row, The Chainsmokers have landed a spot at #12, this time with Bebe Rexha. Earlier this year, they gave me an interesting collaboration with 5 Seconds Of Summer in Who Do You Love. However, that song soured on me in record time, in part because the drop got annoying after a while. Call You Mine, on the other hand, is a different story. I couldn’t quite get into this at first for whatever reason. But overtime, it really grew on me. I absolutely love the drop here. The production is basically a rehash of Closer and This Feeling, both of which were big favorites of mine. Andrew and Alex made magic happen with the production work. I’m glad these guys didn’t lose a step here. Bebe Rexha is a good singer and she put on a nice vocal performance here.  She shines in the chorus and how it meshes well with the last drop gave me the chills.  If I were to rank all of The Chainsmokers’s music, this would probably land somewhere in the Top 10 because it is just divine.

11. Ellie Goulding featuring Diplo and Swae Lee – Close To Me
For much of the decade, Ellie Goulding has been a mainstay in the world of music. Lights was her very first major hit that I enjoyed and thus, it gave way to make her become a household name in music. She has been in the spotlight ever since then and she continues to make music. I absolutely adore almost every single she has released. Songs such as Lights, Love Me Like You Do, Burn, and Something In The Way You Move were big favorites of mine from her. Even though Close To Me doesn’t quite live up to those, it’s still a really good song overall. Ellie is a talented singer. When I listened to first three albums, she showed me her full potential vocally. I like how she doesn’t try way too hard to hit those high notes in those songs. Her vocal performance in Close To Me was pretty divine as well. She sounds good and I kinda like Swae Lee’s contribution here. Diplo did a fine job as a producer. He truly showcases his talent here, as opposed to what he did with LSD, which was no good. Ellie impressed me yet again with this song. I tried to find room to place this in the Top 10. But better songs came along during the year and thus, it just barely missed out on cracking the Top 10. Regardless, it did land a spot in my Best Of The Year list, and guess what? Her new album comes out next year. I’ll definitely be looking forward to that.

It is now time, fam. We’ve officially hit the Top 10 in My Top 50 Best Songs Of 2019. What you’re about to see below are the songs that truly stood out to me the most throughout the course of the year. It was really hard for me to figure this one out because I fell in love with every one of them. But eventually, I was able to put it together and now here they are. Prepare yourselves. I will now introduce to you all My Top 10! Here we go!

10. Dan + Shay – Speechless
On the note of country acts, we have country duo Dan + Shay making their appearance on my Best Of The Year list for the second straight year. This time around, they bring us a song that came after Tequila, in the form of Speechless. As you can recall, Tequila was a huge favorite of mine in the second half in 2018 and I ranked it at #40 on My Top 50 Songs Of 2018. That song showed me how talented these guys are musically, vocally, and lyrically. Here, they do it again in Speechless. I like the way the song opens up. We start with the piano and I listen to the awesome voice we get from Shay. It was definitely a breath of fresh air. From that point forward, I knew this would be a fun listen and sure enough, I was proven to be right. Lyrically, it reminds me of Perfect by Ed Sheeran. It basically talks about a couple getting married. The creativity these guys put in the lyrics are just divine. It is meaningful and I can feel the emotion when hearing their vocals. I’m in love with the chorus and they showcased their vocal talent throughout the rest of the song. It was pretty successful both on Hits 1 and the Billboard Hot 100 and I’m happy because they are talented. If I ever get married someday, I want this to be our song.

9. Ariana Grande – Breathin’
As I just mentioned, I haven’t been fond on what Ariana Grande has had to offer this year. In fact, you’ve just recently seen me countdown My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019, which Ariana has been a part of. 7 Rings and Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored are two of my least favorite songs of the year. But despite all of this, she still managed to land a spot in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019 with two songs. The first was Don’t Call Me Angel, which I recently did my take on. Here, she makes her second appearance on this list with Breathin’. It was this time last year that Ariana was riding her momentum with her comeback single No Tears Left To Cry and God Is A Woman. If I were to rank all the singles from Sweetener, I would place this at #1, with No Tears Left To Cry sitting at a close #2. Ariana sounds amazing from beginning to end. I can really feel the emotion when I hear the chorus. It was just divine. Not only that, but I adore the production off of this track. It is well-crafted and the beat was put to good use. The song talks about anxiety, which is something we actually can relate to. I get that feeling quite a lot at times. Yeah, this was a highlight for Ariana Grande and I’m glad this was a hit even though Thank U, Next overshadowed it.

8. Post Malone featuring Swae Lee – Sunflower
There was a moment in time where I was not very fond of what Post Malone had to offer. Early on, he had Congratulations, Rockstar, and Psycho, all of which I still dislike with great intensity. I wasn’t very fond of White Iverson either, but that one at least had some funny lines. Things started to change last year when he gave us Better Now, which was indeed better. I didn’t include it in My Top 50 Songs of 2018, but I considered it an honorable mention. Now, for the first time, Post Malone has made it to my Best Of The Year list. This was taken from the Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse movie soundtrack. I remember not being very fond of it at first. But it grew on me overtime. I like how Swae Lee opens up the song, and it gets better from there. He is pretty talented and he showed me why in the chorus. Following that, we get a verse from Post himself, who did well also. I like the production and the beat.  This became a #1 hit early in the year and unlike his previous single that hit the top spot prior to that, I actually enjoyed that one.  It’s a highlight from Post Malone this year.  He did release his new album titled Hollywood’s Bleeding and it includes this song.  He also has some other stuff that I enjoyed off the album, such as A Thousand Bad Times and Take What You Want.  I’m glad this collaboration between him and Swae Lee worked out well.

7. Katy Perry – Never Really Over
Katy Perry has always been a huge favorite of mine. I remember back in 2008 when she broke through with I Kissed A Girl. I fell in love with the song and I liked what One Of The Boys had to offer. But it really wasn’t until the release of Teenage Dream in 2010 and that was then I truly got into her music. Simply put, Katy is honestly just an divine singer. There is no doubt that she is talented. She has been impressive with almost every single release, although I wasn’t really a big fan of what Witness had to offer outside of Chained To The Rhythm (which as you can recall was my #3 favorite song of 2017). Never Really Over is really no different compared to what she had before. I absolutely love Katy’s voice as always and she sounds amazing in the chorus. It’s basically about her relationship with Orlando Bloom, just by looking at the creative lyrics. She put forth the effort in her songwriting here. The beat is interesting and I love the rest of the production. This was actually produced by Zedd, which pretty much explains why there’s a ticking clock even though I’ll admit it’s overused, but I don’t care. Everything about the song is amazing. As always, I’m looking forward to whatever else Katy brings into 2020.

6. The Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini – This Feeling
I didn’t envision the song’s momentum carrying into 2019 largely due to the fact that I didn’t think it was going to be a big hit on Hits 1. But somehow, that turned out to be the case, much of my pleasure. This song came about a month after the release of Side Effects. I was enjoying that song at the time especially after their earlier singles from Sick Boy were not to my liking. They redeemed themselves last year with Side Effects, and I gained interest in their music again. Then came the release of This Feeling, which was another improvement. I immediately fell in love with it when it was new and nothing has changed. When I first heard that they were creating a song with Kelsea Ballerini, my expectations were very high. And boy, did they delivered big time. I love the work Drew and Alex have done here in terms of the production. They really showed me that these guys are still among the best EDM duo. The drop is just phenomenal. Kelsea is such an amazing singer as she showed me in some of her solo singles. Here, she sounds absolutely divine from beginning to end. I really like the vocal chemistry between her and Drew. The final chorus really gives me the chills. This is easily their best single since Closer, which I still absolutely adore to this day. They did just recently release their new album in the form of World War Joy. While this song wasn’t included in the album as it was in their predecessor, it does have some good stuff such as Call You Mine. Hopefully, these guys end up doing another collaboration together someday because this rocks.

The first half of the Top 10 is officially complete. And now comes the second half of the Top 10, which is the Top 5. The songs in the Top 5 were chosen by me because I felt they were worthy enough for me to put them in that region. At one point in time, every one of these songs were candidates for my #1 spot. But eventually, I had to make the ultimate decision and thus, I am happy with my rankings. After months of hard work that I was able to put forth the effort in, I am ready. It is with my great pleasure to present to you all My Top 5 Songs Of 2019. Here we go!

5. Dan + Shay – Tequila
I’ll bet some of you didn’t expect me to see this song make my Best Of The Year list again, didn’t you? Dan + Shay have become my favorite country duo ever since they bought us Tequila. It made an appearance last year in My Top 50 Songs of 2018, where I ranked it at #40. This year, here it is again, this time landing a spot in the Top 5. In case I haven’t made it clear already, I adore this song with a burning passion. I love the way it opens with the piano and we get to hear them sing. Then, we get to the chorus and that’s when things really start to get interesting. I love the vocals we get from these guys. They really shine here and their vocal harmonies are just amazing. I definitely feel the emotion when I hear them sing. I love the lyrics about heartbreak and how one thinks about a relationship.  The creativity these guys put in the writing was just phenomenal.  Everything about the song is just a gem.  I saw these guys perform at the Grammys this year and it was just beautiful.  Well done, Dan + Shay.  You guys gave me something that’s pleasant to my ears.  It’s probably one of the premier country songs I’ve heard all year long.  And hey, it did win the award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.  They deserve it.

4. Ava Max – Sweet But Psycho
Out of all the new artists coming into the fold in 2019, I consider Ava Max to be the best of the bunch. It was around Thanksgiving of 2018 when I first heard of this song. I remember being very fond of it for the most part and I was hoping it would be a hit. Sure enough, it ended up doing just that. Sweet But Psycho was definitely something that I could get into. It’s undeniably catchy as hell. Ava really made a good first impression here. She definitely showcased her vocal talent that’s perfectly suited for a song like this. She sounds amazing and I love the infectious chorus. It meshes well with the cool synths and a catchy beat. Whatever the producers were doing here, they excelled in many ways. It’s well-produced, well-written, well-sung, and honestly well done overall. If I ever revisit My Top 50 Songs Of 2019, I’m definitely remember this as the song that helped Ava make a breakthrough. She does have a song that’s similar to this in the form of So Am I, which I liked as well. I’m interested to see what else she comes up with in the future. Sweet But Psycho is a highlight of 2019 and it showed Ava Max’s potential as a singer.

3. Taylor Swift – Lover
I’m going to be straight up and simply say that I absolutely love Taylor Swift, even more so than any other artist at the moment. She really has come a long way ever since Teardrops On My Guitar was a breakout hit last decade. It was this time last year that she was riding high with her last album in the form of Reputation. I was a little indifferent on that album. But it did have some good singles such as End Game and Delicate. This year, she gave us Lover, which I fell in love with for the most part with the exception of You Need To Calm Down. I wasn’t fond of that song even though I liked the message. But I did enjoy the majority of her album, including the title track which I’m talking about. Lover is the best her album has had to offer. First off, I absolutely adore the instrumentation in this track. The drums, strings, and piano were all put to good use. Taylor has the kind of voice that fits well for a romantic song like this. She shows her full potential here and I love the chorus. The lyrics are well-written and I like how she can get creative and romantic at the same time. That has been one of Taylor’s strengths as an artist and she really shows it there. I have been enjoying it since it first dropped and I’m glad it’s doing well on the chart even though it’ll likely get caught in between years. Lover is one of many highlights for Taylor Swift from a lyrical, vocal, and musical standpoint.

2. Shawn Mendes featuring Camila Cabello – Señorita
As I just mentioned when I talked about If I Can’t Have You on my Best Of The Year list, I’ve been a fan of Shawn Mendes for a while. A couple years back, he had a song that landed a spot in the Top 5 in the form of There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back. Here he is again for the second time in two years, and this time around it’s a collaboration with Camila Cabello in Señorita. During the time when the song was released, there were rumors about Shawn and Camila possibly starting to date each other. It appeared to be the case when I first heard about the news and indeed, they are. I’m sure they’re happy together and when I saw them perform the song live, it was a thing of beauty. The first time these two did a collaboration was back in 2015 when they gave us I Know What You Did Last Summer. That one didn’t quite stick with me. Señorita is a much different story. This came about a month after the release of If I Can’t Have You, which I just talked about. At the time, I was enjoying that song, while I was slowly starting to get into Señorita. My opinions on this and If I Can’t Have You have kinda switched. While I still like If I Can’t Have You, I enjoy Señorita even more. I like how it opens up with the guitar and from there, I knew exactly what to expect. Camila sounds pretty good and I like her verse. But it’s Shawn himself that actually put on a better performance. His smooth vocals fit very well here. I’m in love with the Latin vibe. The instrumentation is just divine and the rest of the production is pretty damn solid overall. Sure, there may not be much in terms of the lyrical depth and it may be meaningless. But everything else here works well to perfection. This was Shawn’s first ever #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and I’m very pleased about this. Well done, Shawn and Camila. You guys gave me a highlight that I’ll look back on for years.

1. Sam Smith featuring Normani – Dancing With A Stranger
2014 was the year the music world really got to know Sam Smith. He gave us a breakthrough that was Stay With Me and thus, his road to success would begin. Fast forward to 2019, and he lands a spot at #1 with quite possibly my favorite song from him in My Top 50 Songs Of 2019. Prior to this year, I didn’t quite envision myself actually falling in love with a song from Sam Smith. But now here we are. All it took was a collaboration with former Fifth Harmony member Normani, to be able to create a song that’s divine in every sense of the word. After all, he was a big fan of Fifth Harmony back when they were together and he dreamed of collaborating with one of them. I’m glad he got his wish. From the day it was released, my expectations were pretty high coming into the song. And when all was said and done, it exceeded every single one of my expectations. I don’t think I’ve ever said this before when it debuted, but I liked to call this the sequel of Love Lies. Loves Lies was a great song and I enjoyed it overall. And I can say the same for Dancing With A Stranger. First off, I’m in love with the melody here and the beat is just divine. Sam puts his vocal talent to his full potential. The way the song opens up was the first sign of how it would turn out. Then, we get Normani for the second part of the song, and she delivered big time. Her voice is just divine. If I were to rank all the members of Fifth Harmony, I would put Normani at #1 because she is the best of the bunch (Ally Brooke would come in at #2 and Lauren Jauregui at #3). And when the second chorus comes in, I can easily feel the chemistry between both of them. They have very good chemistry together. The idea of Sam Smith creating a pop song of this caliber was beyond my wildest dreams, as soul ballads are his strong suit. His first two albums showed me that. Whatever he did here worked out very well. Congratulations Sam Smith and Normani. You gave me a song that I’ll remember for years to come.

And that will do it!  My Top 50 Songs Of 2019 has officially been complete!  It was a lot of work, but I’m glad that I was finally able to get it done!  Let me know what you guys think of the list.  2019 wasn’t really the best year.  But it did have plenty of good songs, as you just saw.  I’m looking forward to what 2020 will bring us in terms of music.  I have more Year-End posts coming.  So, stay tuned for those.  Thank you all for reading.  I hope everyone here has a good Merry Christmas.  🙂

Niall Horan (2) – Week Of December 14, 2019

NH2Hello, fam!  First off, I want to talk about the game between the Falcons and the 49ers.  It was a thrill watching them pull off the upset on the road against one of the best teams in the NFC.  That’s some good stuff!  Anyway, I know this countdown post is a little late.  But that’s only because I’m still hard at work on my Year-End posts.  So, I’ll try to make this as quick as possible.  Let’s get right into it.  Before we get to this week’s fresh 45, here are the songs we’re saying goodbye to this week:

#1 Song This Week One Year Ago: The Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini – This Feeling (1st of 7 Weeks At #1)

Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week: Ed Sheeran featuring Khalid – Beautiful People (–6)

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Tie between Selena Gomez – Lose You To Love Me and Taylor Swift – Lover (+4)

New Entrants:
– We get the return of Brendon Urie and company not long after the departure of Hey Look Ma, I Made It a couple weeks ago.  They give us their cover of Into The Unknown, which is from the Frozen 2 movie soundtrack.  It goes without saying that this is not as good as the original.  But I do like it quite a bit.  Brendon Urie is a good singer overall and he shows me why in the song.  I like how he hits those high notes in the chorus.  The production is pretty neat as well.  It’s pretty good.  And I don’t mind it sticking around for a while.

– Our second and final debut of the week comes from Harry Styles with his third song on the countdown as he recently released his new album titled Fine Line.  This time, he gives us Adore You.  Unlike his previous two singles which took me a while to get into, I actually fell in love with this right from the start.  The production has plenty of life to it.  It’s got a groovy beat.  Harry sounds good with his voice.  The lyrics are nicely written.  I haven’t heard his new album as of yet, but I’m definitely interested.  This is a a really good song and I do hope it has some success here.

Best Debut Of The Week: Harry Styles – Adore You

Just Let Me Adore Blurbs
– Yeah…so, there really isn’t much to talk about in terms of the blurbs, in part because there was a lot of inactivity on this week’s countdown.  But I’ll do my best.

– Our two exits consist of songs that aren’t worth caring about very much.  Stack It Up is pretty underwhelming for a Liam single.  I just couldn’t get into it.  It reminded me too much of Selena Gomez – Same Old Love.  All The Good Girls Go To Hell was a bit of a step down from Billie Eilish’s discography and I’m kinda glad it didn’t catch on.  I do hope to see Everything I Wanted debut on the countdown soon.

– Probably the only noticeable drop comes from Beautiful People, which dropped out of the Top 5.  This one is declining elsewhere, but I’m very happy that it got some success and it managed to hit #1 here on this countdown.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:
Olly Murs featuring Snoop Dogg – Moves: It was nice for Olly Murs to make his comeback, and boy did he have some groove to it with this song.  It reminds me of Bruno Mars’s latest music.

Lauren Jauregui – Expectations: Production-wise, I really like the guitar and Lauren puts on a nice performance.  While it’s not something I’ll actively seek out in the long run, it’s a pretty good start for Lauren.

Ava Max – Sweet But Psycho: I really love what this song has to offer.  Ava has an unique voice and the production is just catchy.  I’m pleased that this became a hit in 2019.  I’ll talk more about this in my Year-End posts.

AT40: Lizzo (2) – Week Of December 14, 2019

New Entrants:
– Our final debut of the year (and the last one for the decade) comes from a song that is currently gaining momentum.  It’s from newcomer Arizona Zervas and he gives us his new single in the form of Roxanne.  I’m not exactly sure what he was going for here because it doesn’t work out well for me.  I don’t really like how she wants to party and what not.  That’s not something I can get behind.  Lyrically, the song is god-awful.  And I haven’t even gotten to the other aspects of the song.  The production is absolutely no good with a terrible beat and Arizona’s voice being heavily drowned in auto-tune only makes matters even more asinine.  Yeah, I’m not too thrilled about seeing it here on the countdown and the sad thing is, it’s still gaining momentum and will likely be a huge hit heading into 2020.  Not something I want.

All She Wanna Do Is Blurb All Night
– In terms of our exit this week, Liar by Camila Cabello wasn’t destined to become a hit.  Having listened to some of what Romance has to offer, it’s probably one of the few interesting songs off the album, even though it wasn’t that great.  I wasn’t wowed by her new album for the most part.  I’m sure she can make better single choices in the future.

– Trampoline hitting a new peak at #4 is a huge shock for me.  But I’m definitely happy that it got this far.  I HIGHLY doubt this’ll go to #1, though if would be a miracle if it did.  SHAED getting recognition is one of the highlights for 2019.

– Lose You To Love Me enters the Top 10 just to make me even happier (no reference to Marshmello and BΔSTILLE).  I’m looking forward to seeing this become a huge hit on this countdown.  I’m glad Selena Gomez made her comeback.

– Writing On The Wall making a big jump is not something I want to see.  Like I said last week, we’re looking for better music heading into the new decade and this song will only have a negative impact on the charts.  We don’t need this to become a hit.  Let’s hope it dies out fast.

New Entrants:
– We have some interesting debuts here for this week. To begin, we get more of Harry Styles here with his second song on the countdown. And guess what? He’s about to give us a treat by bringing us some Watermelon Sugar. Tasty! What’s more? He even has yet another new song debuting on Hit-Bound. But we’ll get to that later on. In terms of how the song goes, I initially didn’t care for it at first. But I came around to it. In fact, my thought process was the same when Lights Up first came around. I quite like the production here and the trumpets sound good. Harry does well with his voice and I like the chorus. Yeah, this is quite solid.

– Following that, we have musical duo Sofi Tukker making their first appearance on the countdown with their newest single titled Purple Hat. If you don’t know who these guys are, allow me to refresh your memory for a sec. Two years ago, they had a song in the form of Best Friend. I thought that one was pretty cool. Too bad it was stranded on Hit-Bound and we haven’t heard from them since then. But now here we are.  Hopefully, they start selling purple hats.  They look cool on me.  Anyway, I like the production and the beat here.  I think it sounds cool.  Sophie has a unique voice and she showcases it here.  It’s definitely a song that I can dance to.  Let’s hope it sticks around.

– Next, we get the comeback single from the band Hot Chelle Rae.  They bring us their new single in the form of I Hate (Love) LA.  I’m not exactly familiar with most of their music.  But I thought Tonight Tonight was pretty good.  As far as their new single goes, it doesn’t quite live up to that.  But I still kinda like it regardless.  Although I’m not necessarily huge on the lyrics, I am quite fond of everything else.  The chorus sounds pretty good and the instrumentation is nice.  I don’t really have much else to say.  I think it’s a pretty good song.  But I don’t picture myself coming back to this in a few years.

– Last and definitely least, we have newcomer Arizona Zervas with Roxanne.  I’m not getting the appeal to this song.  I first heard this while I was out driving and I remember not liking it.  My thoughts have not changed.  His voice is no good as he is heavily drowned in auto-tune.  In addition, the lyrics are terrible and so is the production.  It lacks substance of any kind whatsoever.  Yeah, I’m not a fan of this song at all and the fact that we’re letting it become a huge hit only makes matters worse.  This is not something I want to see gaining momentum heading into 2020.  Hopefully, it dies out fast.

Best Debut Of The Week: Sofi Tukker – Purple Hat

Watermelon Blurbs
– We’ll begin with our exits. First off, it’s good to see that we bid adieu to Cool. That was a horrific follow-up to Sucker. I’m glad it didn’t stay for too long. I Don’t Care soured on me after a while. I wasn’t exactly wowed by it, but it was nothing I hated in the end. The only two songs that I’ll be missing are Higher Love and Call You Mine. The former deserved much better, and it’s a shame that Kygo is underrated in the US. The latter had a good countdown run and I enjoyed it during its tenure. It may not have hit #1, but I’m glad Hits 1 treated it well.

– It’s about time that Nice To Meet Ya got the nod at #1.  Even though it’s not a huge hit elsewhere, this is still Hits 1.  They love any and all things from One Direction.  I’m perfectly cool with this since this song rocks.  I’m definitely here for it holding the top spot for as long as it likes.

– Well, it doesn’t look like The Hype won’t be with us for too long as it is dropping like flies here.  In addition, it doesn’t appear to be taking off elsewhere.  I’m glad Hits 1 was able to pick up on this song.  Along with Jumpsuit, this is one of the best Trench has to offer.

– After having a rocky start to the countdown, Dance Monkey finally takes a big jump into the Top 30 this week.  I’ve decided I like the song after a while.  It’s gaining momentum elsewhere, too.  I’m looking forward to seeing it become a hit in the US.

Hit-Bound:

  • Lil Nas X – Panini
  • Fall Out Boy – Bob Dylan
  • 88Rising featuring Joji & Jackson Wang, Swae Lee, and Major Lazer – Walking (DEBUT)

Entrant Reviews:
– Up first is a collaboration between four different artists (Joji & Jackson WangSwae Lee, and Major Lazer) in Walking.  Not a lot I can say about this one.  There’s nothing really going on in terms of the production and I’m not feeling the verses we get from them.  My opinion could change, but right now I’m not impressed.

– Immediately following that is my new least favorite song at the moment.  It’s from Blackbear with Hot Girl Bummer.  I did a full-on rant on my AT40 review when it debuted.  But to sum it all up, I don’t like what it’s going for at all.  Blackbear sounds terrible and the production is no good.  And the shitty lyrics only make matters even more asinine.  Yeah, this is a mess.  I’m hoping it doesn’t debut, but I have my doubts.

– We get Harry Styles with another new single in its stead.  It’s called Adore You.  Unlike his last two singles, I actually fell in love with this one right from the start.  The groove is nice and I really like his voice here.  I’ll save most of my words for when it debuts.

– Finally, we have more of Camila Cabello with Living Proof from her new album, Romance.  I wasn’t a big fan of this at the first listen, mostly because of Camila’s vocal performance.  I don’t like her voice here and the rest of the song isn’t too interesting for me.  That’s all I have to say about this one.

Biggest Fall Of The Week: Liar by Camila Cabello (–13)

Biggest Rise Of The Week: Hot Girl Bummer by Blackbear (+8)

New Entrants:
– We have more of Travis Scott here, and he gives us Highest In The Room.  Me, personally, I’m not a huge fan of his music.  He hasn’t really impressed me outside of a few songs from ASTROWORLD.  It’s about a toxic relationship and wanting to get out of it.  We’ve seen a lot of songs about those nowadays.  There’s really not a whole lot about the song that’s worth caring about.  The production is pretty lackluster and I’m not feeling the beat.  Travis sounds okay, but he didn’t really shine in any part of the song.  What more can I say?  Yeah, I’m not feeling this overall.

That’s Just The Way It Blurbs
– It’s about time we said goodbye to Old Town RoadLil Nas X does have some talent.  He just doesn’t show it in this song and everything else about it (including Billy’s verse) is mediocre all around.  So yeah.

– Well, we won’t see Camila get another huge hit heading into 2020 as Liar takes a big drop.  That one doesn’t look like it’ll be much longer with us.

– Ugh, why in the hell are we letting Hot Girl Bummer gain momentum???  We are looking for better music heading into next year and this isn’t what I want.  Again, his voice is obnoxious and the rest of the song sucks.  We don’t need it to become a much bigger hit.

– We do have Don’t Start Now moving upward.  Everything about this song is divine in every sense of the word.  It’s a nice comeback for Dua Lipa.  That’s the kind of song I want to see be successful in 2020.

– And then our #1.  Lizzo continues to ride the hot hand as she gets her second ever #1 on this countdown in the form of Good As Hell.  I think it better than Truth Hurts mostly because of the chorus and the production.  It’s nice to see her back at #1, this time with a different song.

2019: A Year In Review, Part 1: My Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019

Hello, fam! So, we’ve finally reached the end of 2019. And with that comes the Year-End posts! During the month of December, I’ll be working on a series of Year-End posts that’ll cover several different topics. Because this year marks the end of the decade, I plan on doing the Decade-End posts as well. Those will be coming up later this month. But first, it is now time to do Year-End post #1!

The first post talks about my least favorite songs of 2019. Like every year, we have had plenty of good music. You’ll see some of my favorite songs as I countdown my Best Of The Year list. But there have also been plenty of putrid and downright terrible songs that I legitimately disliked for different reasons which I’ll talk about below. The list is primarily based on songs that made the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown and/or the American Top 40, both of which I review on a weekly basis. I’ll also talk about the ones that exclusively charted on the Billboard Hot 100, though that’ll be in another Year-End post. I will thoroughly describe as to why I legitimately disliked those songs.

Today, I’m going to talk about the songs that charted on Hits 1 and the American Top 40. I’ll begin with my dishonorable mentions. Those were songs that are bad, but weren’t able to make the final cut for my Bottom 10. This year, I’ll be going through my dishonorable mentions and I’ll explain why I dislike them. So with that in mind, I will now present to you my dishonorable mentions:

  • 5 Seconds Of Summer – Easier

Let’s kick things off with a band that has been around for much of the decade. These guys have made some songs that I enjoyed. But Easier is unfortunately not one of those songs. There’s no band here. Their vocal performance is mediocre and the rest of the song isn’t very interesting. But of course, it went to #1 because Hits 1 loves these guys. Yeah, I’m not a fan of this.

  • AJR – 100 Bad Days

Speaking of acts in which Hits 1 seems to love, we have AJR here. They have not impressed me with what they’ve had to offer over the years. If you’ve read my blog back in 2018, then you probably know that Sober Up was my #1 least favorite song of that year. They also had Burn The House Down, which I’m not fond of either. Here, they give us 100 Bad Days. It’s really not that different compared to what they had before. The production isn’t too bad, but I don’t like their vocals and their songwriting is just horrible. I really don’t have anything else I can say beyond that. AJR are just not a good music group and this song gives me a reason to slowly step away.

  • Alessia Cara – Trust My Lonely

Since Alessia made a breakthrough with Here back in 2015, she has made music that I loved, such as Scars To Your Beautiful, Growing Pains, and her contribution in Stay with Zedd. But Trust My Lonely is not one of those songs unfortunately. It’s really the weird production that kills the song for me. Alessia sounds okay, but she couldn’t really save the song from simply being mediocre at best. There are some questionable lyrics that I won’t get into right now. Overall, this is one of my least favorite singles from her so far. She can do better.

  • Ally Brooke featuring Tyga – Low Key

Honestly, I expected more out of Ally Brooke when she made her solo debut. But overall, she did not meet my expectations with the song. Here, she sounds underwhelming in the chorus, and Tyga himself doesn’t make a good contribution either. I’m not feeling the lyrics and I don’t like the message that it sends. The production is okay, but for the most part it’s nothing special. I personally think she is a talented singer and she has shown me what she is capable of in songs like Higher and No Good. But here, she doesn’t show any of that. Yeah, this is just disappointing overall. Let’s move on.

  • Ariana Grande featuring Social House – Boyfriend

Ariana has disappointed me this year with her latest music (save for a few songs that I won’t mention).  Boyfriend just shows how much she has evolved, and simply not for the better.  The beat is not very interesting.  Ariana barely showcases her vocal talent, and the members of Social House didn’t really contribute to anything.  I don’t like the lyrics here, either.  I think they send bad messages.  It’s one of the worst Ariana has had to offer.

  • Benny Blanco featuring Tainy, Selena Gomez, and J. Balvin – I Can’t Get Enough

Since Benny Blanco impressed me with Eastside, his latest music hasn’t really been appealing to me. I Found You was pretty mediocre for the most part. Then, he gives us I Can’t Get Enough, which is easily one of the worst singles he’s released so far. Production-wise, it’s pretty obnoxious. I don’t like Benny’s work here and the beat sounds pretty bad. I don’t like the verses we get from either artist. Yeah, this is a mess. NEXT!

  • Bryce Vine featuring YG – La La Land

It was around this time last year that Bryce Vine had his single titled Drew Barrymore.  I wasn’t a huge fan of that song.  La La Land is just as bad, if not worse than its predecessor.  His voice is not good whatsoever and YG does nothing to impress me.  What more can I say?  Overall, I’m not feeling this one.

  • Chris Brown featuring Drake – No Guidance

I remember hearing this for the first time and I thought to myself, “this is not good”.  But of course, it ended up becoming a Top 10 hit for whatever reason still unbeknownst to me.  I don’t see the appeal to this song.  I think it’s pretty bad.  Chris sounds bad and he is drenched in auto-tune.  The beat is not interesting and I don’t like the lyrics here.  He didn’t really put forth the effort in his songwriting.  Drake makes a okay contribution here.  But even he couldn’t save the song from being mediocre at best.  So let’s move on.

  • DJ Snake featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna, and Cardi B – Taki Taki

I remember liking this song back when it was new and I thought it was pretty good. I honestly don’t know what the hell I was thinking. This is not EDM in the slightest. Neither artist sound good here and I don’t like the production. DJ Snake is so much better than this. I liked plenty of what he has to offer over the years. But this isn’t it.

  • Halsey – Nightmare

It’s crazy just how much my opinion has changed since the song debuted. It’s pretty much the opposite of Without Me, which I kinda came around to unlike most people here. I really like Halsey and she’s a good singer in my opinion. She has made some stuff that I enjoyed. Nightmare is not one of them, unfortunately. She tried to go for something different when she released the song. But it just did not work out well to mine or anyone else’s liking. Here, she sounds so annoying with her yelling in the chorus. I’m not fond of the lyrical content here. The production is somewhat okay, but everything else brings it way down for me.  Halsey is capable of much better.  But this is terrible and I’m not so sure why I liked it at first.

  • James Arthur – Empty Space

Unlike most YouTube critics and some in the blogging community, I never really hated Say You Won’t Let Go. I thought it was pretty decent for the most part. I liked the instrumentation and James sounded okay. But Empty Space is a different story. The song is not good overall. Here, his voice doesn’t sound good and the production is underwhelming. I like the lyrical content in this one, but that’s the only redeeming quality about the song. I may have kinda liked Say You Won’t Let Go, even though it didn’t stick with me in the long run. This one…not so much.

  • Jonas Brothers – Cool

The Jonas Brothers have done a lot this year, what with their comeback single Sucker becoming their biggest hit of their career. But Cool was just not a good follow-up to its predecessor. Initially, I thought it was okay because I liked the guitar and their vocals were nice. But after a while, I started to realize just how mediocre the song truly is. Here, they’re bragging about being cool (hence the title) and what not. Personally, I think it sends a bad message. And Nick Jonas does not sound good here. These guys have made some good stuff. But this was not a good choice for a single.

  • Kaskade featuring Meghan Trainor – With You

Unlike most people here, I think Meghan Trainor has made some good music. But I’m not very fond of this song. It sorta reminds me of I Wanna Know in a away, which didn’t stick with me. Kaskade is somewhat talented and he’s made some stuff I really like. But this was not a good display of talent. The drop is underwhelming and I don’t like the production work here. Meghan does not sound good at all here. Overall, it’s just not a good EDM song.

  • Lil Tecca – Ran$om

Not much I can say about this song except it’s no good.   I don’t like Lil Tecca’s voice here.  The production and the beat are not very interesting at all.  The lyrics are pretty bad.  This is another in a long line of generic rap songs that are not very good.

  • Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus – Old Town Road (Remix)

I’ll admit that I don’t really loathe this one that much as I did back when it was new, mostly because there were even worse songs that came along during the year and thus, it makes the song look better in comparison. It’s still not good though because I don’t like his voice and Billy Ray Cyrus doesn’t do anything to make it better. It does have some country elements, but it was poorly executed as it has a trap beat. It’s sad that this was the song to break the record for most weeks at #1.

  • LSD featuring Lil Wayne – Genius (Remix)

LSD consists of a collaboration between three different artists (Labrinth, Sia, and Diplo).  It may be interesting on paper.  But when I heard their music, I was not impressed at all.  Thunderclouds was one of my least favorite songs of last year.  Genius isn’t quite as bad, but it’s still underwhelming and not very good as a whole.  I don’t like Lil Wayne’s verse and the rest of the song is not interesting to me.  Nothing about it really stands out.  So yeah, I’m not fond of this.  NEXT!

  • Madison Beer featuring Offset – Hurts Like Hell

Last year, Madison Beer gave us Home With You. Even though it wasn’t anything special, I liked that song for the most part and I included it in my Honorable mentions for 2018. Hurts Like Hell is just bad in and of itself. Madison does not sound good in the chorus and the production is not interesting whatsoever. Offset hardly adds anything to the song. Overall, this is just bad. I want something more along the lines of Home With You, not this.

  • Post Malone – Wow.

I’ve warmed up to Post Malone since last year and I think he is talented for the most part. Unfortunately, Wow. is not a good example of that. His voice sounds good here, but the production here is just underwhelming and virtually non-existent. That’s all I have to say about this one. While it’s better than Rockstar and Psycho, it’s not something I can get into. Sorry.

  • Push Baby – Mama’s House

Formerly known as Rixton. I remember when they had Me And My Broken Heart and I loathed that one with a burning passion, mostly because it comes off as pissy. Mama’s House really isn’t any better. I’m not huge on their vocals and the lyrics are no good. I don’t have much else I can say beyond that.

  • Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down

I’ve been a big fan of Taylor Swift for a while and Lover was a good album. But this was not a good single choice in my opinion. I get the message that it was going for. But it just didn’t work out for me from a vocal standpoint. The chorus is pretty irritating and not very pleasant to my ears, and the beat has no substance. Yeah, I’m not a fan of this. Taylor has had much better.

  • Travis Scott featuring Drake – Sicko Mode

Surprise! You guys thought I was including this in My Bottom 10? Well, here’s the thing: there were worse songs that came along during the year and thus, it barely missed the cut. But that still doesn’t excuse the fact that this is just terrible in every way. The introduction makes me cringe and I knew from the very beginning that this would not be a pleasant listen. Sure enough, I was proven to be right. Not helping matters is the beat switch. And while the rest of the production isn’t as bad as the intro, the brittle trap beat is very unpleasant. Neither artist sound good in the song. And no, I don’t loathe the song because I don’t have faith in the rap genre. I loathe the song because it is a mess. I’ll never get the appeal to this whatsoever.

And that’ll do it for my dishonorable mentions. Those songs were bad, but they were not able to make the Bottom 10.  I can understand the appeal to some of these.  But for the most part, I just couldn’t get into them.  With that in mind, I am ready to present to you my Bottom 10 Songs Of 2019!  Let’s get on with it!

10. Ariana Grande – Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored
Thank U, Next was a very disappointing album in my eyes and it’s sad because I adore Ariana Grande. Her latest music has not been very appealing to me this year. Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored is one of those songs that I legitimately disliked. I guess Ariana sounds good in the song. But I loathe the lyrical content in the song and the message that it sends. I also dislike the production and the use of the trap skitters are annoying. So yeah, this is not good and I hope to never suffer through this again.

9. Ed Sheeran featuring Chance The Rapper and PnB Rock – Cross Me
On the note of other artists who’ve disappointed me this year, we have Ed Sheeran. You’re talking about a guy who has had a big year in 2017, what with Shape Of You being massive and his other singles from Divide following suit. This year, he gave us a new album in the form of No. 6 Collaborations Project. I don’t exactly loathe the album unlike some people. I was just a little indifferent towards the album. There’s some good stuff for sure. But there’s also some putrid songs, such as Cross Me. It just doesn’t really fit Ed Sheeran very well. I don’t really like the production and Chance The Rapper and Pnb Rock did nothing to impress me with their verses. This is the worst Ed has had to offer from his album.

8. Gesafflestein featuring The Weeknd – Lost In The Fire
I know it may seem like I did a complete 180 on this. But I just listened to it for the first time in a while and I did not like it at all. I enjoyed a lot of what The Weeknd has had to offer over the years. Songs such as The Hills, Can’t Feel My Face, In The Night, Starboy, and Pray For Me were some of my favorites from him. But hearing this again, it actually put me in the shoes of those who were not very fond of it at first in large part because of the content it contains. Gesafflestein’s work is no good. He didn’t really impress me here. In addition, the lyrics really bring the song down for me. I find them very cringe-worthy and there’s virtually no depth. It’s supposed to be a diss track aimed at Drake. But it was poorly executed in almost every way possible. Yeah, this is just shit and I don’t know what in the nine hells I was thinking when I liked it before. Sigh. I hate being negative towards The Weeknd, especially since he’s done a lot to impress me over the years. But as a music critic, I have to be honest.

7. Lauv featuring Troye Sivan – I’m So Tired…
This song reminds me of why I’m not sold on Lauv overall. I’ll say that it is better than I Like Me Better, which was also one of my least favorite songs of last year and even me saying this is a step up isn’t saying much. First off, Lauv’s voice is drenched in auto-tune. I can’t think of single part where he sounds good in the song. The production is asinine and I don’t like the beat here. I originally thought Troye made a decent contribution. But hearing this again, I find that he adds virtually nothing to the song whatsoever. Yeah, this is just an unfinished product that is bad on so many levels. NEXT!

6. Jordan McGraw – Flexible
A.K.A. the son of Dr. Phil. I remember not caring for this one very much. But this has only gotten worse every time I heard it. Yeah, everything about this song is a mess. The lyrics to the song make me cringe. I feel like he should’ve taken a different approach because it is poorly-written all around. Production is obnoxious as well, especially after the chorus which I find to be extremely underwhelming in large part because his voice is DRENCHED in auto-tune. Jordan does not sound good in any other part in the song. I can’t think of anyone at this moment that sounds worse than Jordan McGraw. His falsetto is grating. This is insufferable and thus, it’s something I’ll never come back to again. NEXT!

5. Marshmello featuring Kane Brown – One Thing Right
It’s pretty damn sad to see just how low Marshmello has gone lately. I remember when he collaborated with Selena Gomez in Wolves and I ranked it as my #2 best song of 2018. But then, he gave us the huge mess that was of Friends with Anne-Marie. Ever since then, things really went downhill for him. The quality of his music has been slowly degrading and almost every single release has been shit. Now we have One Thing Right. I initially found it to be just underwhelming as fuck and it has only gotten worse with each and every additional listen. I’ll make this plain and simple: this is NOT EDM in the slightest. This is LAZINESS! He did not put forth any effort in producing the song whatsoever. There’s not a single aspect in this song in which he has impressed me. It just shows how much he has evolved for the worse.  I had high hopes for Kane Brown since he’s a good country singer.  But he sounds like shit throughout the song.  And him being drowned in auto-tune just makes matters worse.  And then there’s the asinine lyrics, which talks about a woman being with a guy that does all the wrong things.  Simply put, this is just a mess and it’s another new low for Marshmello.  I was rooting for him following the success of Wolves.  Now, I’m not so sure anymore.

4. Imagine Dragons – Machine
Kudos to fellow blogger Adrian for accurately describing my thoughts on the song when it debuted on the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown at the beginning of this year. It was around this time last year that Imagine Dragons gave us a follow-up to Evolve, by the name of Origins. That album was not very outside of a few songs. Machine is easily my least favorite single off of the album and my least favorite single from these guys. I knew from the very beginning that it turn out to not be a good song and sure enough, I was proven right. Dan Reynolds sounds good yelling in certain songs. But here, he sounds so obnoxious with the yelling and I can’t stand it. The guitar is woefully out of place. They attempted to make a rock song out of it. But it was badly executed as Dan’s obnoxious yelling and putrid instrumentation made this not a fun listen. Simply put, this song is a mess and I’m extremely disappointed to have to say that about Imagine Dragons. And to think this is the same band that made songs such as Radioactive, Demons, and On Top Of The World. Compare this to their older singles and this just makes you wonder, “what happened?”.

3. MAX featuring Quinn XCII – Love Me Less
What in the hell is this??? I remember first hearing the song when it debuted on the Weekend Countdown and I didn’t exactly cared for it at first. But it has gotten worse with each and every additional listen. But the fact that it overstayed its welcome on the countdown for way too damn long really pissed me off. Simply put, this song is TRASH. MAX sounds terrible here. I know he has potential of being good, but boy he did not put on a good performance here. His verses have no momentum and the lyrics are terrible.  That, coupled with the production that just blows in more ways than one makes this unbearable.  And don’t even get me started on Quinn XCII’s verse.  It is just GRATING in every sense of the word.  Even though I didn’t liked his predecessor, Lights Down Low back in 2017, at least I kinda saw the appeal to the song.  This is just complete and utter shit.  What even pisses me off more is how overplayed it was.  I’ll never understand the appeal to this whatsoever.

2. Lewis Capaldi – Someone You Loved
I really did not want to hate this song. I tried my best not to hate it because I actually found it okay at first. But it has slowly been getting worse with each and every additional listen and as it continued to gain momentum, it just made it harder and harder until I absolutely couldn’t take it anymore. I’m usually a sucker for piano ballads. So naturally, I have high expectations for these kind of songs. But a good piano ballad requires a decent singer and this one certainly does not. Simply put, Lewis’s voice is terrible. He sounds okay in the first verse. But then it all goes to absolute shit when we get to the chorus. My goodness, does he sound awful there. I legitimately cannot stand it. And not helping matters is that there’s a severe lack of lyrical depth.  Despite me not including this in My Bottom 5 picks every week, it is still a putrid song in almost every way.  Lewis attempted to make a good first impression and the end result was a disaster of a song both in terms of the vocals and the lyrics.  But of course, this was a #1 hit, which shows just how shitty the quality of music has gone.  Hopefully, if Lewis comes with more music in the near future, it’ll be a lot better than this.

1. Ariana Grande – 7 Rings
Every time I hear this song (because trust me, it was not pleasant), I sit here every day and think to myself, “what the hell happened to Ariana Grande?” I really like her ever since she made a breakthrough with Problem. Almost every single she has released up to this point has impressed me. In fact, I recently counted down My Top 10 favorite songs from her back in the summer Love Me Harder and Into You were huge favorites of mine back then and they’re probably one of my favorite songs I’ve heard from Ariana. I fell in love with those songs. But unfortunately, 7 Rings is a much different story. I listened to it for the very first time and I was simply not impressed in the slightest. But of course, this ended up becoming a #1 song because of her overexposure. This song really tested my patience for most of the year and it was absolutely unbearable. Ariana’s attempt at rapping sucks. She’s basically bragging about her material stuff and all that other shit. That, combined with the shitty trap beat and how it poorly interpolates The Sound Of Music just makes this not a fun listen at all. Whatever the hell she was going for did not work out to mine or anyone else’s liking. But what’s even more astounding is just how big it got. She is so much better than this. I’ve had enough of this song. It’s overrated and the worst thing she’s ever put out all fucking year.

Okay, so that’ll do it. What you’ve just read was me tearing apart my least favorite songs of the year. I hope everyone here enjoyed reading this list. But my work is far from done! There will be more Year-End posts in the weeks or even days to come. So, stay tuned! I hope everyone here has a good week as we approach the new decade! Thank you all for reading! Have a good day! 🙂
